Default I'm supposed to give up sugar

Well, for a few weeks anyway. This naturopath thinks it's the worst thing for me and is the source of my tummy issues, and now my skin rashes. Bugger. I love sweets. I said 'even just the rare bite'? She said 'when junkies get clean, they don't get to shoot up on the weekends either'.

To support her theory, there is diabetes in my family. My endocrinological issues also can lead to insulin resistance...I've been told before that I would really benefit from a 'low glycemic diet', and I've always said 'fuck that, I love cookies'.

Any advice? I'm already in withdrawal. I can't even have jam on toast! I don't know what i'm going to do with myself. Does anyone else have a sugar problem and care to join me on my journey? It's not permanent, just one of those 'do it for 30 days to see if you can develop better habits' or whatever.

Can you have sugar-free products, like ones that use artificial sweeteners and stuff? I've had sugar free jam and sugar free strawberry spread that is somewhat OK tasting (I really really prefer strawberry preserves, so the sugar free stuff doesn't cut it for me generally).

So anyway, what's the deal here, can you have alternatives? Or do you need to cut out all the artificial stuff too?

I can have alternatives. I don't like aspartame, but yeah, just sugar is the bad. The one that makes the blood sugar spike all over the place and the one that kills the body's 'good bacteria'. I'm on some next level ninja probiotics too. But the sugar thing is a 'bad addiction'.

Haha, it's like the more I protested, the more I sounded like an addict. This isn't a diet thing so much as a 'get healthy so I'm so sick and miserable all the time' thing.

Did she recommend this also because of candida?? Because there are cleanses you can get at the health food store with herbs and stuff in them that will help keep your body balanced. Do you like natural sweeteners??? There's stevia, xylitol... and fruits like dates can be pureed and use in baking to make things sweet.

Wow, that'll be tough, b/c sugar is in so many things, sometimes even stuff you wouldn't think about, like some breads and stuff.

I know I've seen a lot about low-glycemic and/or sugar-free recipes and stuff. I'm off to bed shortly, I'll let you know if I have ideas or if I can find the stuff I've gotten on it. (emails and books and stuff).

I think artificial sweetener is a lot more dangerous than sugar.

I'm a firm believer in the theory that all things are good for you in moderation. This theory is not popular in our modern culture; we've somehow gotten the idea that everything except certain approved foods are wicked-bad-poison and must be avoided at all costs. Our grandparents and great-grandparents had gravy and jam for breakfast and finished off every supper with a pie and they were healthy, because they didn't gorge and they used natural ingredients cooked at home. And of course they exercised.

It's about lifestyle and eating actual food, not singling out a particular "poison" and treating you like a junkie. If you want to give up sugar, go for it, but sugar occurs naturally in all fruits and vegetables so clearly we are meant to consume it in some quantity.

To clarify, I think she meant white sugar. Junk food sugar. Fruit is okay...white bread and stuff, not really okay. Low-glycemic carbs are okay, high-level ones are less great.

But actually, PCOS is one of the ONLY times even nutrionists recommend low carb diets. I want to have a baby some day, and my hormones are all fucked up...and somehow I'm insulin-resistant (or almost...borderline) even though I have a BMI of 20. Like, I have a 26inch waist and wear size four, but they're talking insulin stuff. It's madness. I'm trying to play their game, but believe me I'm not happy about it. I'll try to link some of the research...when I heard that HALF of the women with my disease are OBESE, I started to pay attention.

I have tried to cut back on sugar. Fresh-cut pineapple is one of my favorites. It's sweet and healthy and good for you.

I completely cut out sugar from my diet for about a month a while ago. I think I was going through some kind of crisis. I am a huge sweet tooth but I really could see a difference my skin was clearer, I felt like I had less mood swings I had way more energy and I felt amazing. But honestly I love sweets way too much. I couldn't even think of doing that now. Wait... I should be more supportive... good luck you'll really feel much better after you kicked it, itreally is an addiction in many ways.

I gave up sugar last Oct - so glad I did! I had done it before a couple of times half heartedly because I have always loved my variety of food but this time I dont think theres any going back.

1st thing - dont go the artificial sweeterner route. Google if you dont know how bad that stuff is for you.

Make a list of foods you like that you can snack on. Fresh fruit is great and veggies - dried fruit if youre allowed it (if this related to an anti-candida diet then dried fruit is not allowed.) Nuts rice cakes, corn chips and dips - check the ingredients if youre not making your own. Im also a huge fan of fresh juices - I dont know if I could have made such a big diet change (gave up all sorts of things) without them.

And dont worry it gets easier! The first few days are hard because your instinct and habits are hard to break but after that it starts to feel more natural.

After giving up sugar for a while and then trying foods with sugar in them again I found I didnt like a lot of food I had previously loved. They all taste sickly to me now. I think its really good to do this - hopefully youll get really in tune with your body and you may work out that there are all sorts of things you consumme that it doesnt really like.

The amount of sugar added to food these days is appalling. I saw a show on it last week - so much more than even 20 years ago and fruit and vegetables are being produced to be sweeter too.
According to a book I have sugar isnt even classed as a food, its classed as a drug. Food for thought huh? (-:

Sugar free hot chocolate used to be a staple of mine when I wasn't having sugar. It was perfect for after meals when I needed a sweet, because I'm queen of "I need a sweet after a salty."

Don't feel bad- I'm the type of person who would eat chocolate cake for breakfast. I just finished off a box of Entenmann's chocolate fudge cake- bought it less than 2 days ago.

    Eliminate sugar cravings:

Buy l-glutamine powder. Put a little scoop under your tongue and let it dissolve.

    But some stevia too!

I do best with as little sugar as possible (it makes me gain weight like nothing else) and I've found that the best way to cut off when I've gotten addicted is to go cold turkey for some period of time, and then re-introduce small amounts. At that point, the small amounts taste WAY sweeter, and normal desserts taste TOO sweet -- kind of poisonous, they turn my stomach. Make fruit pies that are *only* sweetened with fruit -- you can find recipes online, plus there's a cookbook out there -- and you can make various cookies and breads using banana as a sweetener.

When you've been on this stuff for a while -- a little bit of raw sugar in your coffee* might taste good, but all commercial desserts will just taste nasty and you won't want them at all!

*Coffee can also raise your blood sugar, though, so if you're drinking this stuff, you might want to cut back. I've noticed in any case that cutting back on coffee does the same as cutting back on sugar: less does more, after a while, and tastes better.

Oh, one more tip: My blood sugar got totally fucked up when I was in China, like never before (though I think it was low, not high, but sometimes those can have the same solutions) and the cure for that turned out to be eating high-protein breakfasts. I went from having toast to having whole-wheat peanut butter sandwiches and after a while of this didn't feel shitty anymore.

I haven't been managing this thing well at all. I'm barely eating right now with all my school stress, but what I am eating isn't very good. I need to focus more.

I gave up sugar for a year, except naturally occuring sugars like in fruit, and I honestly didn't feel that good. I got a little fatigued. I would try and make sure you eat a lot of fruit not just for cravings but for your health,

I love you so much for that^^^^^^! I agree 110%!

I would MUCH rather deal with sugar and other natural things, than all that fake shit that will give you cancer.

good luck with that! That's gotta be hard. I'm a sugar addict, sugar makes me breakout and I had to have a root canal a while ago, I need to give it up too.

Supposedly you stop craving it after a few weeks or so.

Get berries (raspberries, blackberries, whatever) and mash them up on your toast. Sugar free, healthier and reaking yummy.

other than that, I had to do it at one point. I wasn't allowed to have alternatives either. After a week or so, you'll be ok, until then...good luck. It's painful.

I try and avoid refined sugar as much as I can. Like others have said I do still eat lots of yummy berries and fruit. However I do like to enjoy sugar free candy every once in a while.

This is my favorite sugar free chocolate fix . The raspberry cream dark chocolates are very nice paired with fresh berries.

A low carb and low sugar diet makes me feel better and gives me more enegry. I actaully feel kind of sick now if I eat stuff like cookies or regular candy.
