Default Tell me where to eat in San Francisco, I have specifics to meet

I like going out and having nice lunches (or dinners if I'm not dancing that day) .

I need some places to go that don't discriminate foodies eating alone ( for example , good places that have a small starter , a small dinner, a possibly a small dessert for $17-$40 ). I like quality and trying a few things over big portions of one thing. I also like local places ( or at least local chains/sister restaurants). I don't need recommendations for national chain places.

So far I've had good luck with some indian places, bad luck with every asian place I've tried ( around 4 ) , and just so-so luck with everything else. This is a food centered city and I have barely even found a handful of places I love. I need your help and advice .

These are a few of my SLC places ( there are many more ) so you can see what I like :
    http://epiccasualdining.com/menu.html
    http://www.faustinaslc.com/
planning to try the 3 courses for for $30 Mondays at http://www.themetropolitan.com soon

I'm a food nerd. I may start another thread later about your favorite places to go in the western U.S. or just a general " who else is a foodie thread".

You should check out Fog City Diner. I've been there once and really liked it. My best friend is taking me there for my birthday lunch this week. Also, it was featured on the Travel Channel's Top 10 Places To Eat In San Francisco.

^ Yum. I've been by Fog City many times and from the outside it looks like it would have hamburgers and other really basic stuff. The menu looks really good and prices look reasonable.

I'm checking out the italian place website now. Thanks for the suggestions. This has been such an exhausting trip. This is making me happy again.

I went to the culinary academy awile ago ( when traveling with a friend , sometimes I have dinner company here ) for what was made out in advertising to be such a great dinner experience / fun experience with the student chefs ... and it wasn't worth the $36 AT ALL.

I'll try to find a link so you know not to go there.

    Keep the suggestions coming !

Despite the fact that I hate the show's host schilling for Ruby Tuesday, the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is my go-to list for places to try. Now-- I love fine dining as well-- but I also like down home places if they can deliver something interesting and good. None of these are "fine dining."
Here is what is listed for San Fransisco:
    Grubstake Diner
    1525 Pine Street
    San Francisco, CA 94109
    Tel: (415) 673-8268
    Website:

(open til four a.m. and how can you not love a place that has a special part of the menu for portuguese food?)

    Joe's Cable Car
    4320 Mission St.
    San Francisco, CA 94112
    Tel: (415) 334-6699

my respect has cooled quite a bit since the Ruby Tuesday commercials. His show is based on mom and pop places (that have to fight against chains), and he accepts a contract to represent one of the biggest national chains?

He seems cool, but what a fucktard move.

^ I don't watch much tv ( food and travel channel when I do ) and didn't realize he did that. I guess they don't put the Ruby Commercial into the diner / dives show breaks. Seems like a strange choice, but I'm understanding as to what might have $motivated$ him to do it.

^ granted it's a drive into Sonoma, but if you EVER can get reservations or slip into French Laundry in Sonoma somehow-- do it. I've met people who've eaten there and I'm soooo jealous.

^ That's way out of my budget for now, but definitely a future " must do ".

You'd think they would get a faster website ... http://www.frenchlaundry.com

I like Scala's because their Bostini Cream Pie dessert is one of my faves. It's close to Union Square and they have a nice little bar area that would be perfectly comfortable for single dining. I too will eat by myself rather than not check out a great place, so I'm with ya.

Have you tried House Of Nanking? It's one of my favorite Chinese places in SF. Try the deep fried potstickers and the sesame chicken--it has sweet potatoes in it yum!! It's on Kearny between Colombus and, um, shit, I can't think right now--don't go uphill from Colombus on Kearny and it's on the right side.

LOL Carmen what part of SF do you usually stay; so that, I have an idea of what to recommend.

Most of the Italian places on Columbus Ave are good (have you tried the Stinky Rose, if you like lots of garlic).

If you want Asian head out to the Richmond District on Geary-
Chinese, Japanese, Thai, you name it.

This is the SF Bay Area board at chowhound:http://www.chowhound.com/boards/1

An excellent resource. Please do yourself a favor and head to the farmer's market at the Ferry Building on Saturday mornings. Several options for lunch there, including the Slanted Door-Vietnamese fusion.

    http://www.slanteddoor.com/

Also pick up a SF Chronicle on Thursdays. They have an insert section called 96 hours, featuring weekend happenings and always a restaurant review and a bar w/ apps review.

^ Calif : I usually stay right in the city in a borderline ghetto area ( the Civic Center , I'm not really sure if there are worse areas other than the tenderloin ... are there ? ). I think it might be time to find another home base in SF.

Dirty : That's funny you mention chowhound. Yesterday , I picked up a magazine and discovered that site. I didn't know there was a foodie message board out there ! SW is the only board I get on. I simply can not do any more computer nerding time , so I'll have to just lurk at chowhound or cut back my SW time. Also ... wow ... the slanteddoor looks spot on for what I like. I definitely want to do the lunch or dinner there when I'm traveling with a friend - it seems hard to eat there alone with how things are served , but I'm putting it on my must try list ( which has grown a ton since I started this thread ).

I've been to the Ferry building, but I went when the market wasn't there. I didn't know you were supposed to go at certain times , so I was just like " wow, this sucks " .

    Glam : I'll try Nanking ! http://sanfrancisco.citysearch.com/profile/917590/

Susan : That place looks good ! I wrote a very witty response ( regarding how hot the pastry chef at that place is , but it didn't seem to save my message ).

This thread is making me happy . I had a hell of a travel week . It was one of those weeks where I just felt picked on and homesick the whole time ( which is really rare for me when I travel ).

LOL yes there are worse areas actually, but you can actually find some very good Vietnamese food in that area on Larkin right near City Hall.

Yeah, there are way worse parts than the Tenderloin. Two words: Hunter's Point.

^ I'm not aiming for a worse area, so I'll stay away from there.
Newcomers guidebook to San Francisco says H. Point is: " Some toxic waste still here from WW2 , mix in of stucco boxes and public housing projects " . Well ... I won't go out of my way to find it.

The tenderloin scares me a little, I'll be honest. I don't really go into that area. If I need to go through it , I take a cab.

Yeah, the Tenderloin is not my fave part of town. Seems to be full of junkies and homeless people. Not fun to drive through (people just randomly crossing the street and such) and definitely not somewhere I want to walk through without a man with me.

To add to GSWRDs post, there is also an Askew Grill in the Marina on Steiner between Lombard and Chestnut.
