    Default Staph or not?

    I've got a bump on my upper back of thigh that looks just like the google images of staph, but it's medium sized not vey large, and doesn't hurt at all. It is a bit tingly though. t has stayed about the same size since I noticed it last night.

    My doc doesn't have any appointments open until wednsday, but I have a HUGE exam thursday and my doc is about 40 miles away since I moved to the middle of nowhere for college. Do you think it's ok to wait it out until thursday night for after hours clinic, or friday mroning for reg doc?

    if there are not red lines coming away from it its not a dire emergency. I say if it doesn't hurt you can wait. but if you see any of the veins coming away from it turning red, go the the ER imediately!

    I wouldn't fuck around with it- it's very easy to diagnose in a clinical setting and treat. It is almost always a trivial problem, but if it goes south, it'll kill you in a day- your cost/benefit is pretty high.

    Staph skin infections normally cause a red, swollen, and painful area on the skin. Other symptoms may include:

    * Skin abscess
    * Drainage of pus or other fluids from the site
    * Fever
    * Warmth around the infected area

    Symptoms of a more serious staph infection may include:

    * Rash
    * Shortness of breath
    * Fever
    * Chills
    * Chest pain
    * Fatigue
    * Muscle aches
    * Malaise (general feeling of illness)
    * Headache

    A localized staph infection is confined to a ring of dead and dying white blood cells and bacteria. The skin above it feels warm to the touch. Most of these abscesses eventually burst, and pus that leaks onto the skin can cause new infections.

    Superficial staph infections can generally be cured by keeping the area clean, using soaps that leave a germ-killing film on the skin, and applying warm, moist compresses to the affected area for 20-30 minutes three or four times a day. (Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap is especially good.)

    P.S. Wash your hands. Often. For at least 10-15 seconds. Money, shared locker areas, and stages are perfect vectors, and you can spread it to other parts of your body as well.

    You'll probably be fine. Just try not to touch it. I had one on the top of my thigh once and I didn't realize what it was. My jeans rubbed against it for a few days and the red part spread to 6" across. I've still got a scar the size of a dime from where they had to drain it.

    It doesn't sound like staph. When I had it, the abcessess and lesions grew in size and pain very quickly.

    take a hot hot bath and make sure the bump comes into prolonged contact with the water. If it is staph, the bump WILL look like it's bigger from all the crap coming to the surface-- if you can, get someone to gently push at the sides to empty out the pus (this will happen readily and much easier than a zit.) Then use hydrogen peroxide or some other thing to clean around the area to make sure the pus isn't going to cause anymore bumps in that area.

    Wash all of your clothes and bedding very carefully because this stuff can stick around forever on cloth.

    If it were me, I would absolutely not try to pop the thing. It is a serious infection and I would definately recommend antibiotics from the Dr.

    I went to the doc, she said it is folliculitis. It's still the same size, still doesn't hurt at all, it's just ugly. She gave me antibiotics for this though, even though she said it will eventully go away on it's own. Now I don't know if I want to take the antibiotics

    because antibiotics suppress symptoms and sometimes have a deletrious effect on one's immune system, not to mention birth control if that's an issue for her.

    as far as "popping" the staph (which it's not but for future reference) it's not popping. With staph, most time the stuff comes oozing out after being in contact with hot water. And it's actually best to remove it (I speak from experience. I waited to see the doctor for my first encounter and it was the worst thing ever. I drained it at home and it was so much better. Though that was strong enough that I needed antibiotics. A couple times after I caught it in time, drained it, washed everything, disinfected as much as I could, and didn't need to go get antibiotics.)

    As far as folliculitis is concerned, people mentioned using anti-dandruff shampoo as a body wash. I actually use this from time to time when I have bumps from work or shaving and it seems to do the trick-- something in the active ingredients. You could probably find it in here-- It was posted in BB sometime in the past six months I believe.

    Please DO NOT squeeze anything that you think may be staph. Squeezing the area or messing with it in any way will only further irritate the area and cause the infection to spread. Not to mention that the pus has the bacteria in it and you can spread it to other people and onto other areas of your body.

    I also speak from experience.
