    Leavin tomorrow!!

Tomorrow I'll be headed to Columbus, Ohio. then t pittsburgh, myrtle beach, dc, back to columbus, home to Vegas, then off to Sacramento!

There was a slight kink in the sacramento plans, as I got an acceptance letter to nevada state college here and I really really wanted to stay so I could start a bachelor's degree.....but I couldn't find the funding nesessary to stay, so I had to let that go and keep to the sacramento plans. It disappointed me...I am havign a vey hard time finding a college in Sacramento. their nursing programs seem extremly difficult to get into and almost garuntee a wait list of at least a year. Sucks.

I'll be heading to Sacramento with (hopefully) just enough money for gas to get there. I'm horribly stressed out about how I'm going to get there and have money to survive until I find a job. I wish I could stay in vegas just a bit longer and work some but I wont have anywhere for me and the animal to stay.

Hey- a quick question. What's the best way for my dog to travel? I want to buy him a car seat with a harness and strap him in the seat, but would that be ok, or a carrier be better? I wanted the harness because then he could look out the window and keep me company...in the carrier he would be bored crazy for a 9 hour drive...but I want him to be safe as possible.

Also...what will I do with the cats and dog when I stop to go to the bathroom? I can't leave the car running, but I'm worried the car will get to hot. Also I'm scared someone will see the animals in the car alone and call the police ( as I would) for being left inside on a hot day.
I can't lock my car doors while it is running. I've trried that already..so I can only leave them inside while I run in to use a bathroom or get food. What should I do? The amount of time they can be safely left inside a hot car is probably under 5 minutes, as this is the desert. If I give them water will they be ok? Should i buy some kind of battery opperated fan to blow on them? what should I do?

Should I feed/water the cats the night before I leave? But if I do that, they will have to go to the bathroom at som point. How will I let them use a litter box? My car is too small to put on out for them. After I fit all the carriers in my car, I will only have room for 1 suitcase in my trunk. I am going to ship my thigns after i have money to do so because after i get my pets, I cant bring much else with me. So where will they go potty? But I can't not give them water for that long of a drive, espicially in the heat. I guess I can just hope they let it go in their carrier and I can clean it out when I arrive. Suck for them to sit in their pee/poo pfor that long..but what else could i do? I can take the dog out on the side of the road, but the poor cats....grr. I dont know what to do . and I dont have any money to do anythign else. I dont even know at this point if i will have gas money to get there...I know I wont be ble to buy food/gas once I'm there to find a job. I dont know what I'm gunna do. I've been socking away money for quite some time now, but it hasnt amounted to very much at all.

I hope when I go home in a few dyas my dads and random family members will maybe give me some cash for my move, and for my graduation, but I won't hold my breath.

blah. sorry I'm rambling. Hope everyone has fun while I'm gone and be safe. Last time I went away all hell broke loose here and I got banned. I hope that deosn't happen again

    No leaving!!!

Alas, I understand you must go... I would probably nottake the cats with me on an unnecessary road trip. Can't your roommate take car of them? Or your petsitter? I know somebody that might be able to take care of them if you can't find anybody else. I don't have a bathroom solution either. If you don't take the cats you can stop at a place with bathrooms outside you could take the dog in with you...

^ yeah, I'm not worried about the dog. I can take him into a rest stop. No, I dont have anyone to watch the cats. Matt's roomate said absolutly not. Matt was supposed to watch them because I was comming back in October with my friend to get them..but his roomate said no way. So I have no choice but to take them now.

If you know someone to watch them until October, yo have to keep in mind Peanut requires monthly vet visits and medication once a day..so it's hard to find someone willing to nt only keep them, but make vet trips and give meds. Well..I'm sure matt would be willing to pick her up and take her to the vet for me, but as for the meds.... grr. I dont knw what to do with them. I dont want to take them right now, it's to hard doing it alonne, and not safe for them...but I dont have a choice.

    What a fun trip!

I traveled with two dogs from Va to Il. I'd stop at a rest stop, take the dogs out. Then I'd put them on the car just long enough to use the bathroom, that little bit of time didn't hurt them, then take them out again before hitting the road. No problems!

    Have a safe trip!

So you are going to have the car?

I can try to help with the animals. I did the trip from upper NorCal ( 2 hours north of Sac)from Tucson and back 2x, so about the same distance or more than yours and my fur babies survived

    Dog:
Since you will probably have a backseat full of stuff and a cat carrier, I would simply let Dash sit in the front seat. Most of your driving will be highway anyays, so for the best gas mileage (since you're also worried about having enough fuel for the trip) keep the windows up and use the AC. It reduces wind drag. Point the vents into his seat. Every once in a while you can open the windows for fresh air when you hit areas where the road isn't technically highway. Put a nice sheet or towel on the seat so he will be comfy. Since you will mostly have the windows closed for AC (save gas!), he should be ok. When you want to open the windows you could probably clip a short leash on him and secure it somewhere so he is restrained, but can hang his head out.
Nevada rode in my car with me on the way there and she's a tall and leggy dog (whippet mix) and she was fine in my front seat of my little car. Whenever you have to gas up/potty, that's his turn to go as well. If you can, park under some shade (yes it's hard at some of those middle of nowhere CA stations) so your kitties dont get hot. Take Dash on a leash and stay near the car and let him do his business. Then make sure to be as quick as possible about your potty break and you should be OK. LO has a good idea about maybe taking Dash in to potty with you if you explain to the attendant.

As far as food and water- I did not feed my dogs in the morning before the car ride. I gave them a tiny bit of water beforehand, but they would be given plenty of food and water at night at the hotel when I was resting overnight. They won't die waiting the day, as long as you at least give them a small amount of water on trips.

    Cat:
Cat went in a carrier with a towel inside. I suggest putting down a towel you don't care very much about and a backup, because if they get nervous, or really have to pee, they will go in the carrier. i fed Lucifurr the night before the trip and the night at the hotel with water, but nothing after i went to bed. Cats will be OK with nothing as long as they get it late the night before-it's just like surgery prep. They will mostly be nervous and sleep the trip away. Lucifurr did go a long time the first leg of our trip, so he pottied a bit in his carrier, but that's why I put an old towel in there so I just threw it out and put in the backup. Keep the car cool for cats, and try to get a sheet or towel to put over the carrier. This does two things:

    1. Keeps them calm in the dark
    2. Keeps them from getting carsick (which cats do!)

And remember a travel litter pan for the hotel!

Make sure to check out pet friendly hotels on your route before you go, so you can expect how much it will cost. here's a good site:

I used it for my trip. Some hotels charge per pet, some charge a flat fee, some are wildly expensive, so look into it. (Some are free!)

If you can be sneaky you can say you only have Dash, and stealthily sneak in the cats. (We said we only had 1 dog, while we really had 2 dogs and a cat.)

Good luck, and any questions, feel free to ask. Been there done that, and it can be quite fun!

About my car, I have it until the 17th. I made a $200 payment to stop the repo until then. On the 17th I have to pay in full or else the car will go into the kind of repo status that I cant get it back..Apparently, the day I made the $200 payment, the car was set to go into final repo with no get back in 2 hours..but I made the payment to stop that. So I have it untl the 17th....I'm still brainstorming a way to come up witht hat money.

Dash will be fine..I'm not worried about him. I camn take him in with me at a rest stop. It's just the cats that I'm so worried about. even if I park in the shade, what if I dont go to the bathroom fast enough hwat if there's a line? what if I have to poop? It's been over 100 degrees lately...I dont know if even 5 minutes in the car is safe.
On a 78-degree day, the temperature inside a shaded car is 90 degrees, while the inside of a car parked in the sun can reach 160 degrees in minutes. Animals can succumb to heatstroke in just 15 minutes.
That scares me! it'll be over 100 degrees. If they can die in 15 minutes..how long does it take for them to get sick and require vet assistance to save them? To risky. I guess I'll just have to do my best and hope for the best. I'm sure it'll end up ok. I just worry to much. I should be worrying about how I'll even get there.

Just crack the windows when you go in and lock the doors, and hurry of course. I'm sure they'll be okay. I made a trip from TX to GA once and had my kitty in a carrier and she was okay while I stopped. You'll have to find some solution for a litter box, maybe get a small container and litter and offer it to them while you run into the bathroom?

I made that trip a few years ago so I don't remember much other than my kitty getting carsick and it smelled horrible

How much do you need by the 17th? There has to be some way....

^ about $1000 right now, but on the 17th the payment will cycle again tacking on an additional $250. The car hasn't been paid on in something like 4 months? When I made the $200 payment, they said it was 99 days past due and they had been activly trying to reposess it for some time. But apparently there are 2 levels of reposession, the kind where if they take it you ca pay to get it back and then the kind where they take it and you can't get it back, it just goes to auction. I made the payment right before the second level of reposession.

I'm going to go to Reno to dance as soon as I get to Sac. if I can get enough money to get up there. I would stay here and dance for a bit, but I wont have a place to stay. My bf moves into his new place on the 17th as well, and I won't be welcome there.

anyway...I'll figure it out somehow...at least once I get to cali, they wont know wheer the car is to take it....and I'll get the money in time before they wont accept it or file a stolen car report or something... I'm uprisingly not stressed about all this...I think I gave up. Maybe i got tired of being so stressed all the time. I dont know. I'm a lot less worried than I should be and normally am.

going on this little rtip isnt the best idea, as i could be staying in vegas and dancing until it's time to move..but when my friend bought the tickets, none of this was happening, and they are nonrefundable tickets. I cant screw him out of hundred of dollars. So I kinda fucked myself, but i made these plans longm ebfore i knew all this was happening and now there is no way out....plus, I just needa fuckign vacaton. i need to get away from all this stress and relax for a bit. And it wil be nice to see my dad and friends back home before i move again. i just wish this trip came at a better time.

Generally cats like to do things on their own terms, so even if she was to offer up the litter pan at rest stops, chances are the cats are nervous and pissed, so they wouldn't do anything.

They do make travel litterpans for cats, but my experience with Lucifurr is that he hated it and instead peed in the hotel bed. Just get a smaller version of the everyday ones and you should be fine.

Oh! Or maybe get some off those pee pads for potty training dogs and stick it in the cat carrier over the towel?

Dang, now I almost wish we would have stayed in NorCal so I could see you! Maybe some other time; R wants to go to law school in HI or CA, so maybe I'll see you sometimes in the next few years and we can trade hospital stories since we're both going to be nurses

^ yeah, hopefulyl we'll cross paths one day.
The cats would never go potty whil i'm in the bathroom. they will be to scared to do anything, plus, my car is o small. it's gunna be hard to fit everythign as it is...I'm actually going to put a suitecase on top of their carriers, cause thats the only place for it. 2 carriers in the backseat, dash in the front, that only leaves my trunk. no fllor board room either. my car basicially has no backseat. but the pee pads are a good idea. I have some of them anyway. I'll just clean out their crates as soon s I can and give them baths if they go on themselves...sucks for them, but they'll survive.

I can't add anything better than above, except a few thoughts:

If the rest stop has trees, try to park in the shade. That will help keep the car from heating up.

If no shade, look for a little old lady or a mother with children. Ask her if she will sit with the ccarriers while you go to the restroom.

My friend who moved cross country with three cats talked with her vet and had them mildly sedated for the trip. They weren't stressed and ate less.

To save gas money, if you can do it, drive slower. On my last long road trip to Montana, I drove 80 mph on the way up, got 26 mpg, and it cost me $106. Drove 60 on the way back, got 36 mpg and it cost me $65.

And congratulations on graduating and being valedictorian! You should get an extra copy of the program where you gave the valedictory speech and send it to that unprofessional administrator who told you you would never amount to anything and should drop out of high school. People like that should not be working in education. Their job is to inspire students, not to destroy them.

    Have a great trip.

When you go to the bathroom, park in the shade and crack your windows. Throw a cup of ice in each of the cat carriers, and throw a light colored blanket over them to hold the cool in without absorbing too much heat.

In my van (which is a light color, so probably absorbs less heat) if I park in the shade with the side windows half down and a reflecty thingy in the windshield, it stays the same temperature as outside in the shade for close to an hour, but I also have reflectix in all my windows.

Also, get one of those keychain thermometers and put it on the door of one of the crates. That way if people freak out on you you can show them the temperature where the cats are.

^ ohh. thank you Lena. That's awesome idea. My car is light colored, I do have one of those rflectors, and since my car is so tiny, the other windows are very small, so not much light gets in. If I put a blanket over the crates with ice and the reflector in the window that should be ok for me to run in anywhere i need to. I was wondering what you did with your dog during the day. Thanks so much! I do have a little thermometer on a keychain so I will do that as well. Thank you very much.

Quite a few of the rest stops along I-5 actually have trees (some shade possible).

Wow PB and AL both in Sacto and dancing in Reno.

Too bad you won't be in Vegas this weekend; otherwise, I'd donate the gas money.

LOL true, but if she's passing through during the daytime, they should be open.

I'd recommend PB leave Vegas like 5 or 6 am; so that, she can be in Sacto by like 3-4pm.

Not always. The same freakin rest stops on the way to the Sac airport and beyond seemed to be closed all hours of the day. I heard it was a result of funding.
