    Default seitan?

For those of you who have tried seitan is it any good? And what do you like to do with it? I though about buying from here http://www.upcyclearth.com/food.html but I'm hesitant. Thanks!!

It's all in how it's cooked. I love love love it. I like making Seitan Parmesan instead of Chicken. Add in bell peppers, garlic mash potatos that are organic! Soooo good

E declares that it's gross in texture, but it can taste very good if prepared well. He would make BBQ seitan. Also, you can get tired of it really fast if you eat too much of it. But I think that's how it is with every meal.

You have to cook it really well. Otherwise it's almost spongy. I have a friend who dated a vegan cook here and she taught me how to prepare it so it's not so weird. Thank god. Because the kids will eat it and I can too

I LOVE IT!! Easily my favorite of all the vegan fake-meat options! I used to have the cutest shirt with forks shaped into a five-pointed star that said "Praise Seitan". I really prefer it braised with soy-sauce or garlic sauce of some sort. Vietnamese restaurants will have it on the menu along with other vegetarian options, typically. I also would buy it in a can (braised-style) from any local Vietnamese food market.
If you want to get really adventurous, you can make it yourself with gluten flour and some Braggs liquid aminos. I would every once in a while and it tasted just as good. From a can is just easier, though and it comes with all its seasoned oily goodness. Mmmm... I think I'll make some for myself this weekend...

Great! I'm going to have to try this. So The seitan I posted in the link is premade right? Like heat and serve. But, I can also make my own with special gluten flour or even regular flour?

I like it, it's really good, but I always have a feeling it's not good for me. I've bought the white wave brand (in the red box) and the taste and texture is so similar to real chicken that it freaks me out. I've eaten it maybe twice in my vegan-life.

Yeah, the link you posted was all heat-and-serve from a lady who (I'm guessing) considers herself gourmet. Really, she's just got glorified TV dinners. I'm not knocking it but you'll save a lot of time and money just making it yourself. Its really not hard once you get the technique down and learn how you like to eat it best. You can't use regular flour, just gluten and you can find it organic if you look for it.

Its pronounced "say-tahn" but if you say it fast enough, it totally sounds like Satan!

Keira0304, its funny you say that it doesn't "seem" good for you. When I was fully vegan, I had a bunch of friends who wouldn't touch the stuff because its just like eating any other fried junk food. Sure, in excess it can't be very healthy; especially with all the salty seasonings and sauce. It was always my guilty pleasure, though. I did know some folks who couldn't eat it at all due to wheat allergies and such so that's something to watch out for.
For some vegans it does taste so much like the real thing (chicken, beef) its almost scary. I've seen vegans turn it down because they don't like the idea of imitating eating an animal. That was always what I was looking for, though. A food that was just like real meat that I quit missing it or even forgot what it tasted like. But, to each her own. If you cook extra-firm tofu a certain way, it has the same effect.

^Thank you for the info!! I too got the feeling its not great for you because a lot of people try to cut gluten out of their diet to lose weight. But you don't have to fry it right?

Seitan is one of my favorite foods.

A really great restaurant in town serves a faux cheesesteak with seitan, grilled red onions and soy swiss cheese on gluten free bread that is to die for.

Seitan is gluten. So that meal totally defeats it's purpose of having gluten-free anything in it. haha. Funny.

It's regularly served on a whole wheat roll but I order it on their gluten-free just because I think it's tastier.

Ah that explains it! lol I thought the restaurant was trying to be cool and "gluten-free" and failed miserably.

I suppose you could bake it. I mean, you just boil it in portions. After that, I'm sure it can be seasoned and grilled or baked however you'd want. I think we just breaded and fried it a lot out of habit. Lots of stir-fry type of dishes, you know?
There's got to be a decent oven-baked seitan recipe out there somewhere, right? If you find one, post it so I can try it too. And let me know how it turns out!

No, they're very hippie and try their best to cater to everyone. So they have lots of option for substitutions to appease all diets. It just so happens some of their more restrictive-type foods (those that cater to more restrictive diets) are some of their best offerings.

I'd laugh at something like you assumed too. Like dairy-free cheesecake served with real whipped cream or something. LOL
