Exclamation Please Help...No Life and I Feel Unhealthy

I'm just at a loss here. I feel like crap, I look like crap, and it's time to fucking make a change.

I'm 6 foot tall and 175 lbs. While I'm not overweight (yet!) my mom has commented that this is the biggest she's seen me. I know I don't want to go back to 130-135 because even though that was because of my natural metabolism, I was getting tired of the ana/mia questions when I was still eating like a horse, and I really had no curves.

So I'd like to be a healthy feeling and looking medium. I am not going to make a decision as to what specific amount I want to lose or weight I want to be at; I'd rather just get to a happy healthy medium where I feel great all around. So no scales. I don't own one anyways.

My big problems/ questions I have that I could really use some help with:

    -Cost
I know you can eat plenty of complete crap for cheap. That's what has happened to my diet and my husband's. He has actually bought some protein whey powder and a carb blocker, but that won't do shit if he's still eating crap.
What I want to is to eat HEALTHY on a budget. I do know that it will be a bit more expensive than the cheap carb and sugar crap I've been living on, so i expect that. i just need the best bang for the buck in our financial situation.

    -Time
75% of my week I am working. Most of my shifts are long, like 12noon to like 10 at night. I really need money badly, so I really don't have the time to sit down and have an elaborate lunch or anything; I want to take as many deliveries as possible! Plus my employer has very small windows to actually order food because of busy times. So I need a good plan for a powerful breakfast, and good snacks I can keep in a hot car all day. (I'd be willing to get a cooler).

    -Energy
I have been trying to clean my disaster of a house among other things. For 2 months. My days off come along, but nothing gets done because i am so downtrodden and listless with no energy. I need to get productive or I fear my house will make me sick! I also get very low on energy and am constantly hungry at work, because my breakfast fuel never seems to last any longer than getting me to work to clock in! I also tried nuts in the car, but that's not enough!

    -Exercise
Since I have no energy, I do not exercise besides working which isn't exercise. My joints an muscles ache from inactivity. It's also hot as fuck.
I need a simple startup plan for a complete idiot when it comes to exercise for extremely tired, busy people.

Any opinions, help, kicks in the ass (gentle please), advice, etc (even websites to check out!) Would be so great. I swear I was just getting started on the healthy eating in NorCal, but I crave variety and the monotony was getting me irritible and back to crap eating to comfort me.

Also, is whey protein powder a good boost? i don't mean living strictly on the stuff, but as a supplement??

Visit your local Asian market for fresh fruit and veggies. In every city I've lived in, I've gotten the same produce at Asian markets for a lot less money than in regular grocery stores (plus a lot of delicious exotic stuff that mainstream grocery stores don't have)

Something like this would allow you more options for when you're in your car all day:

It does cost money, but it might be worth it if it allows you to be healthier, feel better and have more energy.

What do you usually eat for breakfast that isn't staying with you for more than an hour?

I've tried yogurt, oranges, oatmeal, and eggs and spam. Eggs and spam is the best out of them all, but still has me hungry again too soon. I feel like a bottomless pit!

And crap, that mini fridge is awesome, but you need to plug it into your cig lighter, and my topper cord has to be plugged into the cig lighter already

i'm with you on the cleaning thing. when things get out of control, i tend to do less. can you set a goal of doing something little each day? like getting trash out or say you'll clean for 10 or 15 minutes. it might not be a lot, but instead of looking at it as you have to clean everything at once (which would be over-whelming) perhaps a good friend could come over and help? i had to get over my embarrassment of a mess and ask a friend to help because i was too over-whelmed to do it. (i'm going to try to think of more ideas, but i will go a long time w/o cleaning and i have different ways to get myself motivated)

as far as the exercise thing: exercising gives me more energy so i have to push myself to do it. i've tried videos but they don't do it for me. when i was pretty out of shape (i was still thin but just really out of shape) i started power-walking, old lady style because i couldn't run for long enough and would just give up. also, music is my savior for working out. so i power-walked and built it up. also, i jump rope because it gets my heart rate up and is more like a challenge to me and fun, and doesn't require power-walking (i was embarrassed to do that for a while, until i sucked it up haha).

    hope this helps some.

Try a breakfast that has a mix of carbs, protein and fiber (the carbs will give you an initial burst of morning energy, the protein is more of a long-lasting energy source b/c it gets broken down more slowly than carbs, and the fiber will help to fill you up.) For example: 2 eggs (protein/fat), an orange (natural sugar/fiber) and a small bowl of oatmeal (mostly carbs, also has fiber and a bit of protein). Or a bowl of high-fiber cereal (carbs, fiber) with berries (fiber) and milk (protein). Or blend a quick smoothie with yogurt, milk (protein), a little bit of crushed ice if you like it more slushy than creamy, a banana and some strawberries or any other fruit (fiber). Or a sandwich of eggs (protein) on whole grain toast (carbs, fiber).

None of those have a ton of calories, but they do have a good mix of what you need for energy. Any breakfast that's protein+fiber+carb will do you.

also...When do you have time off work? Can you take some of that time to do a weekly food shop, and prep healthy meals that you can get to quickly on work days? You can freeze healthy casseroles in single-size mini foil pans (that you can stick in the dishwasher and re-use to save money). Cut up fruits and veggies and put them in little ziploc bags...buy those chicken breasts that come in individual packets where all you have to do is throw them in the oven, etc.

Get a cookbook that deals with easy healthy meals on the go and see what you can make. (You can get used cookbooks for cheap on amazon, or check them out of your local library for free.)

Sorry, I'm a dork who's studying to be a nutritionist, so stuff like this interests me.

Just to give perspective.... (please no quoting the images)

Here's what I look like now. I don't have any more detailed pics, sorry, i hate the camera lately. You can tell that my arms and legs are bigger and if you really look you can tell I bulge a little in the middle and sides (which I tried to hide with the skirt)

Here's what i used to be:

Sveta, can you recommend a good cookbook? I don't know how to cook, so I have no idea what to look for.

    1. Food:
*Cut out the sugar. Sugary foods will make you hungrier than savory foods. Need something sweet to take the edge off? Try sugar free jello w/ some fruit. Bananas are great to go with strawberry jello. Super sweet, too. If you make your own jello (Hot water in a bowl and refrigerate.) It is way cheaper then buying the pre-packaged jello snacks. Buy your dry jello on the same aisle as flour and sugar.

*Stir Fry is your friend. Really cheap and really healthy. Chop up some fresh veggies, add tofu (or other protein, but tofu is dirt cheap for the nutritional punch it packs) and serve with steamed brown rice (I make a bunch of rice and portion and freeze it. It takes the same amount of time to cook 10 servings of rice as it does just one.) Or try Pad Thai noodles. Yum! and fast. Be creative with your stir fry. Mix bell peppers, chicken, carrots and pineapple. Try tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, garlic and basil stir fried in olive oil and sprinkled w/ Parmesan cheese. Add salt to taste. Serve over polenta (cheap and fast to make from cornmeal) and die of taste bud bliss.

    Stir fry also microwaves well.

*Keep mixed dry fruit and nuts on hand for filling quick snacks. Almonds are an appetite suppressant.

Need more energy? Have you tried Modafinil? You can only buy it on line, but a lot of sports enthusiasts are using it to boost energy. Some people like, some don't. It is expensive, though. I use adrafinil. It has the same effects, only milder. Also much cheaper, like by $100. It is prescribed to elderly people to boost energy, so very safe as a stimulant.

You can do exercises in your car as your driving. Hold yor abs in as tight as possible for as long as you can. make a goal of like 30 seconds and then build up to 1 song on the radio. Release, wait a few seconds then do it again. Do the same thing with your ass muscles. Hold for a bit, then release. When you walk up to drop off a delivery, make the most of that walk, as short as it may be. each step squeeze your butt cheeks and thighs together. Take hand weights with you in the car and do some curls at each red light you hit, for as long as the red light lasts. umm....ok, out of car exercise ideas.....but good luck!!

    Haha, that was awesome PB.

No I had never even heard of Modafinil.

And I have never tried tofu.....what does it taste like? Can I get it at a regular grocery store?

Right now I'm looking at cookbooks online.

^ hey, I know a great thing for a newbie tofu eater. Make some stuffed shells and add tofu in with the ricotta. You'll never taste it, but add some good healthiness to otherwise unhealthy dish. Low fat cheese and whole grain pasta makes it pretty healthy and delicious.

the best breakfast I can think of is the smoothie, espicially if you want to make it real quick and drink it in the car on your way...they keep me filled until a mid morning snack before lunch. I add protien powder and fibersure to mine so they are even more filling. Just bananas, strawberries, protien, milk, yogurt( fat free on both) a bit of honey.

I need a blender for that. I'll have to look into them. Is whey protein powder good? That's what R bought for himself.

I just bought 2 healthy cooking cookbooks from JoAnna Lund. I heard she's good. I need to learn to cook already. My grandmother and mother are fabulous cooks, why aren't I?

My favorites are at The website also has weekly menu ideas, which I like.

You could also try any of the weight watchers cookbooks (apparently you can get a copy of this one for $0.38 plus shipping)

Here's one I'm not familiar with, but 10-minute meals sounds impressive

If you do a search for "quick healthy cookbook" on amazon, there are about five pages of cookbooks that fit the bill...some of which you can get used for less than $10.

oh, I just thought of something else. If you have a cooler, you can make tasty healthy sandwiches to eat in your car.

Get some of the tupperware containers that have 3 or 4 different pockets in them, and some little round tupperwares for lowfat mayo/mustard/oil and vinegar, etc. Fill the tupperwares with pre-sliced veggies, and slices of meat and/or cheese...so you can put your sandwich together when you're ready for lunch and it won't get mushy during the morning. Buy a loaf of whole grain bread or a bag of whole wheat sub rolls, and you're good to go.

Ideas: sliced provolone with roasted squash, zucchini, red peppers and mushrooms (soaked in a tasty bottle of marinade and roasted on your day off ) on a sub roll...

...sliced turkey and swiss cheese with avocado, sprouts and dijon mustard...

...tuna mixed with lowfat mayo, chopped celery, scallions and a little bit of Old Bay, with some romaine lettuce...

....egg salad (use only half the yolks for less saturated fat)...

...sliced chicken or lean beef with lowfat sour cream, salsa or pico de gallo, shredded cheddar or pepper jack cheese, avocado and roasted peppers, rolled up into a tortilla or dropped on a bed of lettuce for a taco salad (you can also add beans, or substitute the beans in place of meat)...

...a fish sandwich (prep by dropping a piece of your choice of white fish into beaten eggs, then dredging with bread crumbs and either baking or pan-frying) with lowfat mayo and pickle slices...

...baked chicken with BBQ sauce, green beans or lightly steamed broccoli sprinkled with lemon pepper and a whole wheat dinner roll. (If it's hot enough outside, leave the dinner roll on a piece of foil on top of your car for a few minutes with a pat of soon-to-be-melted butter Or fill a little tupperware with olive oil, crushed garlic, red pepper flakes and ground black pepper...great for dipping the roll into). OK so that's not a sandwich, but it's tasty and you can eat it in the car.

Snack ideas: mixed nuts, or sunflower or pumpkin seeds (I like to buy raw nuts/seeds, spritz with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, and bake on a cookie sheet, b/c I think most packaged nuts have too much oil and salt and they taste like a greasy salt lick.) Cut up raw veggies dipped in hummus...cut up fruit with vanilla yogurt dip (or stir in cocoa powder for a chocolate yogurt dip)...plain yogurt with granola and chopped fruit mixed in (less sugar than most commercial fruit-flavored yogurts.)

    whew. hope that helps.

OK I know you said you work long days, but is there any way you can work Bikram yoga into your schedule, say, 3 times a week?

You see results alomst instantaneously, you feel super calm and energized, your skin glows, and it's totally worth it. I'm about to cancel my gym membership and just do Bikram yoga, it has made that much of a difference.

You have comments on eating healthy but if you really want to tone up u do need to find some time to exercise. Even if it's 20 mins a day to do some cardio. Running is great. If u do this 4 times a week u will notice a big diff.

Can I also say I like u now rather than in the before pic?? I know your not showing as much skin in the after pic but still.

I understand completely. You've gotta feel comfortable yourself. I feel the same about myself at the moment and it doesnt matter what anyone else says.

Homemade soup. Seriously. Buy some low-sodium chicken broth (or just use water & get out that spice rack!), a variety of bulk legumes (lentils, split peas, black beans, kidney beans, lima beans, etc.) and cook those until they're ready.... buy 2 bags of mixed frozen veggies from the store, defrost 'em and add them in. Flavor as you like... (but skip the excess salt!)

This is so fucking healthy and cheap and if you make a big stew-pot it'll be good for days... I'm guessing less than 10 bucks for 4-5 days worth of stew. And if you flavor it right, it really tastes good... plus, it'll give you the needed protein, fiber, carbohydrates, and veggies you need, all at once!!! Soooooo good for you.

Whey protein is fine, but work on cutting the crap out of your diet before you stick a band-aid on it.

Oh man, that's my problem, I love salt. It's the flavor of it, I need flavor, spice, etc in a big way. I hate most "healthy" cereal because it's too bland and I put sugar on it.
