Default Ammonia-free hair dye like Revlon Colorsilk?

I've been using L'Oreal Feria for years, and after hearing about the dangers of ammonia-based hair color and metallic dye, I'm going to try out Revlon Colorsilk. I searched, but didn't find much about ammonia-free hair dye other than the occasional thread about organic hair dye.

Any experiences? Warnings? Advice? Also, how do I apply to roots only? Will I have to recruit someone to use a dye brush, or is the squeeze bottle okay? Thanks!

Most ammonia free haircolor is demi permanant, so if you need to cover 25% gray or more, or if you want to go lighter, it's not ideal. The good news is, for those who want to go darker or just see a tonal change, it's gentle- better demi's are enriched with moisturizers and leave the hair in better condition.

You can apply it with a tint bottle- difinately a quick and accurate way to apply color to the scalp although I'd still enlist someones help becasue getting the back of your head can be tricky.

Just to be clear, permanent haircolor containing ammonia is completely different from a metallic dye...

many permanent haircolors and even some decolorizers claim to be ammonia free but they still have an ammonia derivitive in it- it's nessacary in permanent haircolor in order to open up the cuticle and let the dyes penetrate and oxidize. If the haircolor contains no ammonia or similar chemical to lift the cuticle, it is not a permanent color.

Thanks for the advice. My natural color is dark brunette, and I'm going to try a soft black color in hopes that it looks less harsh and fake than the straight black dye that I've been using for years.

I'm also looking at the L'Oreal Natural Match and the Clairol Herbal Essences dye.

^^^ keep in mind the Loreal product you're thinking about is till a permanent haircolor- it will still have an ammonia derivitive in it and, since you're going darker and have no gray to cover, it's unnesacary.

It sounds like the herbal essence is better suited for your needs and desired result.

I have tried that Colorsilk because it's the cheapest dye at Walmart...and it washes out of my hair in days. Total crap i think.

I use it to go lighter and it works great. I have a friend who does the same thing. I can't stand the smell of ammonia.

I love the 'almost black' color. It makes your hair super dark, but not all wig-like, artificial-looking like the jet black. I used the Colorsilk recently to cover up grown-out highlights, and it worked. My hair's lighter again, but it's my fault for going to the beach so often.

    I would recommend Colorsilk.

I dyed over bright red hair a very nice dark chocolate brown with Colorsilk and it came out beautiful.

It's only like 4 dollars and some change, too. If you have long hair or extra thick hair, buy two boxes though. I bought one and had to go back for a second cause I have alot of hair.

So L'Oreal Feria isn't a metallic dye? I did a Google search, and I'm getting mixed answers. I read something about not using ammonia based dye over metallic or hair will fry. I'm also looking at the ingredients lists of both Feria and Colorsilk. Feria has both ammonium hydroxide in the color and hydrogen peroxide in the developer, and Colorsilk has hydrogen peroxide in the developer, along with lots of silicone stuff. I guess I can't escape peroxide.

I'm seriously clueless about this stuff. Thanks.

^^^ no, it's a permanent color which is a completely different animal than metalic dyes... a metallic dye is a gradual color that's typically found in men's color products- think . It works by depositing metallic salts/lead into the hair which oxidizes and turns to a darker color.

A permanent haircolor is an oxidative dye that works within the cortex of the hair... Ammonia or an ammonia derivitive causes the outer cuticle to open letting the dyes into the cortex. The ammonia content in most professional color lines is less than 1%. The oxygen in peroxide causes the oxidation of the dye. All permanent and some demi permanent color uses peroxide.

using a permanent color, permanent wave, or relaxer over a metallic dye will cause major breakage.

Oh yes because everything "natural" is so great for ya It's chemicals and not even 100% pure henna. Try to color your hair after you've used that stuff and it will break right off. TWO Lush employees have told me to stay away and I've seen girls who use it and their hair quality is, well, "caca"

So gald I'm here to enlighten you.

Thanks for the info. I later found stuff on metallic dye, but not much because it's not much used. Feria has certain colors with the word metallic in it, which confused me.

Wish me luck on the dye. What should I do before dying? I abstain from anything -cone beforehand, wash with a clarifying shampoo, and don't wash my hair for 48 hours before dying. Thanks again!

^^^ If your using a permanent color I'd just do a protein treatment before coloring... You really don't have to abstain from shampooing 48 hours before a color- that 'rule' doesn't apply anymore since the chemistry of haircolor has gotten gentler. But I wouldn't shampoo for 48 hours after a color since that's when your haircolor is most unstable and will be pushed out if your shampoo and conditioner have too much moisture.

Sorry Cogan, I was a total bitch. Didn't mean it, I swear!

Henna is way better than the regular box dye but the Lush isn't even 100% henna. And it's way messy and just not good.

Isn't this the haircolor that only costs like $2.96 at Walmart & Target? If it is---- this is the only stuff I use to color my hair and it works just as good as the higher priced hair color. I haven't been able to tell a difference.

For blacks, the Revlon Colorsilk and other dirt-cheap dyes are fine.

For reds, I find, annoyingly, one must put a few more bucks into it. I dyed with Herbal Essences last month and loved how it came out, so I'm looking for it again (annoyingly Walgreens doesn't have the stuff, though.)
