They can be triggered by stress, weakened immune system (ie when u r run-down), sunburn on the lips can also cause them.
There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.
Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

^^ They can also be transferred from someone who they are dormant in. For example I had a friend who never had one, but if i borrowed her lip gloss or chapstick, etc.(or by kisses) I would get one. She passed them on to me even thought she didn't visibily have them b/c she carries the virus but it's dormant. My husband has never had one though, i guess some people are immune.

I was talking in terms of someone who already has the virus and what causes further outbreaks. I thought that's what she was asking.

oh gotcha sorry I thought u meant u caught it from her.
yeh that's a definite way to get another one.
yeh some people are immune coz my dad gets them occasionally (since he was a teenager) and has been married to my mum for over 30 years yet she has never caught it. However he wont kiss her if he has one.

Some people are carriers (for lack of a better word), meaning they have the virus but have never had symptoms. You could have herpes (either type) for many years and never know unless you are tested for antibodies to the virus.
But yes, there are a lot of triggers. Smoking, UV rays (sun or tanning), weakened immune system, drinking, basically anything that can slow or weaken your immune system.
I was first confused, its a pet peev to hear herpes simplex 1 or 2 outbreaks called 'cold sores' as something different from herpes, whoops. MixedBabe 88 is is also right with her 2 posts, and you can also contract herpes virus from someone who is 'shedding' the virus without any superficially visible signs. Supplementing regularly with Zinc and Lysine helps reduce the number of outbreaks and speed healing time. Viruses thrive on low-immune systems, and I noticed growing up with my mom that stressful times guaranteed an outbreak.
I thought anything herpes virus was skin by skin contact. How can anyone pick up a cold sore just by touching something w their lips someones lips have touched? Wouldn't it have to be an open sore or skin contact or something?

tinctures of lemon balm and st. johnswort internally and on the sores. helps alot. more than anything else i've tried. that and a good health routine.
I get cold sores when I'm stressed out, if I don't get enough sleep, if I get a sunburn, if I'm sick, or if my lips get chapped. I used to get them all the time but now I take lysine every day to prevent outbreaks. One lysine supplement per day keeps the cold sores away.
And yeah, it's weird how some people are just immune. K is too. He can kiss me in the middle of a cold sore and not get one himself! So weird. I still don't want him kissing me that way though; I feel too gross when I have a big blister on my mouth.
It would be really rare to contract it from an object, viruses don't live outside the body for long periods of time. Basically, they need a host to thrive. If someone has a cold sore on their lips, and they're drinking a drink, you probably wouldn't want to take a drink of theirs. Either way cold sores are more of a hassle than anything. Some 75% of people have either HSV-1 or HSV-2 or both.
Cold sores or not, drinking after other people is kind of unsanitary anyway.
Mucus Membranes are easier for the virus to enter as are cuts, open sores, etc.
