I got them when I was a kid. The shit that made it hurt was when they tightened them to adjust the teeth. They were metal, so it would scrape the inside of my mouth. That shit was fucking aweful for a little over a year. I had horrifically crooked ass teeth though, so well worth it.

I had them for about 4 months early on in highschool (minor correction) and they hurt. The metal bits cut into my lips and my teeth were sore for a few days whenever they tightened them. I chose white bands so they would look a LITTLE less obvious, but it's important to keep them clean and avoid coffee, tea, and coke. You don't want them to stain.

Ugh. I love coffee.... Im getting regular metal braces but with a the clear band (the part that goes across all the teeth).... Im actually looking forward to it (the straight teeth part) but it just kinda sucks getting them at 26 and not 14.

Ive heard people mention they hurt but I always thought it was an exaggeration. Guess not. Thanks ladies!

Take very good care to properly clean your teeth. I had a friend in high school that had braces and didn't do a very good job with that. When she had them taken off she had like 20 cavities! She also had to bleach her teeth because they were stained from drinking so much coffee and tea.

Yeah, they definitely hurt. I think all dental work is designed to hurt. My dentist says the D.S. after a dentist's name means "de Sade".

It sucks that you can't get the invisalign thing, even though I have my doubts about the system it seems a lot less invasive.

I had braces for a year. I swear I didn't smile the entire time. You have to be careful about biting into hard things and carry a little brush or pipe cleaner around to get food bits out. I had a weird problem that I never got warned about though. My teeth are mottled (two different colors/textures) from having antibiotics as a child. The glue didn't stick well to them so the brackets would come loose like once a week.

But straight teeth are totally worth it! I get a lot of positive comments on my teeth.

Oh yea, I forgot about that! My sister had the same problem.

Your dentist will probably give you the lecture about being sure to clean them really well... but definately take him seriously on it.

My teeth are straight, but I want to get them aligned perfectly since they shifted a bit from wisdom teeth, so I'm going for Invisalign Express. I'm in my 20's too. I wish I had been more self aware and gotten them earlier.

Good luck! It will be worth it.

Uhm. I dont think I can lose more teeth.... lol.... or get cavities. So many have been removed. Im getting a crown tomorrow. 3 more teeth removed in 2 weeks. Have already had 3 molars (2 upper left, one lower left) and my widsom teeth on the left removed. Next is both my wisdoms on the right and one molar on the bottom right. (teeth 1, 30 and 32)

Remember my post about my teeth being bad from medi-cal covering root canals, no crowns and my teeth breaking off? If I took a picture youd squirm.

Luckily all my front teeth are in perfect condition - its just the back ones.

Get braces in October. Will have jaw surgery December 2009. Then braces another 2 years. 2 more teeth removed after that (one lower left, one lower right) Finally 7 dental implants and crowns for removed teeth.

Total not including surgery - around $30,000. Have no clue how Im going to pay for it. But my dentist is so nice - he didnt charge me for my visit or any of my xrays yesterday (including a panoramic) because I was like dude, Im broke and my teeth are horrible.

Like everyone else said, it sucks when you get them tightened. Although, I didn't have problems with my metal braces cutting up my mouth- guess I was just lucky.

Thanks. I put getting them fixed off for too long. When I met with my dentist yesterday he said "Lets not think about the money, lets talk about the best treatment plan." He was right. Baby steps.

When you think $30,000 its like OMG.

When you think - $500 (my insurance is covering the removals and part of the crown).

Then I have a few months before braces ($1,600 up front, $300 a month) it doesnt seem to bad.

I just have to figure out how to pay for the surgery - have over a year to get that money.

Then Ill have 2 years after that to plan for paying for the implants (still thinking Costa Rica) and my insurance will cover the other 2 teeth removals.

I had them for years. As far as pain goes, it depends. Some orthos really like to crank 'em, whereas mine did very small adjustments- which probably resulted in me having braces for a good extra year or two.

Toward the end I did have to wear those bands that connect your bottom braces to your top braces and THOSE fuckers hurt!!!

Be really careful about wearing your retainer when you're done. I got lazy with mine, thinking my teeth were fine but now they're a little crooked again. Still a dramatic improvement over how they did look though.

I had braces as a kid and they fucking hurt. I had an awful overbite so I had tons of rubber bands and a tongue cage for my lisp. I'm going to probably get them again on my bottom teeth soon, after I get my wisdom teeth out. They're not bad, they just make me a little paranoid.

I had them for maybe two years when I was around 13-14. I wasn’t too embarrassed by them because honestly about 60% of my schoolmates had them so I didn’t feel weird. I do remember that my teeth looked completely straight after having the braces on for a few months(and mine were very crooked beforehand) I don’t know why they had to keep them on for so long. Everything hurt me but the most painful part BY FAR were the separators that they have to wedge in between teeth if they’re too close together. Unbearable; they used to try and hush me because apparently I was “scaring the other patients” LOL! Too fucking bad. And every time they put them in they said it was the last time and they always lied.

Now my teeth are noticeably shifting and I’m upset.

I had them for about 2 1/2 years and the worst part was getting them put on. Soups and shakes were pretty much my best friends for the first week, and I used up all the orthodontic wax they gave me to keep the metal from cutting the inside of my mouth. That stuff was really helpful when I went back for the tightenings, which got easier/less painful each time I went in. Just make sure you follow the instructions of what you cannot eat (it'd suck to have the braces damaged and have to get them put on again/fixed) and make sure you keep your teeth super clean so they don't get stained. I had the clear brackets on top of the metal and at first it was fine, but they do stain after a while, even if you're super careful. They yellowed a bit but I kept getting them since it wasn't incredibly noticeable.

Good luck girl, just think of the BEAUTIFUL smile you'll have once they come off and it'll be worth it!

I had them about 1.5 years and didn't think it was too bad. I have a pretty high pain tolerance and if anything, it just felt tight in my mouth. Now taking them off was the worst pain ever. Ouch. But the weekly tightenings weren't that bad.

I'm kind of mad at my parents for not putting them on me at 13-14. None of us ( siblings ) got them. My teeth are fine ( look ok ) , but I want that "perfect" look where they are just awesome looking. So ... I'm looking into this too, but I don't want them and am being a wuss. Before and After photos of your transformation would be awesome.

You already know my 8 year awesomeness with braces. My son got his Monday.

If you can get ceramic do so. It's less abrasive on your lips. Honestly after awhile you forget that you have them and they only hurt when wires poke out (which they do) and when they are tightened.

The pain is next to nothing. It just feels like pressure on your teeth (which it is obviously) It's more a pain in the ass to have them. Wires breaking, poking and brackets coming off at random. Shit I had straight teeth when I had them put on and I constantly was having to get things reupped and replaced.

It never effected my money either. I had ceramic and metal.

Honestly get ceramic on top..metal on bottom. and get the white rubber bands! the clear glow in the dark!

Here is what it looks like

This is the ceramic ones (when I first got them on.) I look way different at 22 ..wow.

And metal. like 2 years ago.

I had ceramic on top and metal on bottom. I ate EVERYTHING with a fork and knife. Cut it all in to small pieces... never bit in to anything so I could avoid any staining of the clear or white o rings. I got mine put on during spring break and when I went back to school a week later, every commented on how good my teeth looked with out my braces (looked like i had a retainer).... I would just laugh and say I just got them put on.

I think because I never really bit in to anything, I never had issues with anything breaking.

Oh, and it didn't hurt that bad.

^ I agree with the ceramic stuff! YOu do have to cut everything up. No biting into apples. Although instead of using the front of my teeth to bite I used the side. Lots of straws too so that you can drink coffee etc. Shit I chewed gum!

If you swish with peroxide twice a week it will keep them very clean and it'll appear as if you only have a retainer on.

    Do NOT eat mustard though
