Default Take this job and shove it

Have you ever worked a job that made you miserable? The kind of job that you dreaded going to every day?

I have been really unhappy with my day job lately. It's office work and I am getting sick to death of waking up at 6am every day to go sit in front on a computer for 8 hours. I feel like I am stressed out all the time and it is really taking a toll on me.

I don't have the balls to quit though because the pay/benefits are pretty decent and it gives me a steady income. Dancing is my weekend job to earn extra cash. I don't think I would do well if dancing was my ONLY source of income. I tried that back when I lived in Cali and it just didn't work out. I make more money at the club when I don't have to get all stressed about it.

I just feel like there has to be something better out there for me. I am thinking of looking into getting another degree so I can go into another field of work. This office routine is going to be the death of me. I feel like I am just a short distance away from muttering phrases like...I believe you have my stapler...LOL.

Your post brought back memories of last year for me. Up at 6, in by 8, out at 4:30, home around 5:30. Then eat, sleep and do it all again the next day. My job was so painfully boring, oftentimes the work was finished by 10 and I had to invent things to do to 'look busy' - which to me is the worst. And I was literally stuck inside as my office had super security, the headache of leaving just to go back through all of the security to get in wasn't worth the fresh air. I was becoming an office zombie.

Think long and hard before you put the time and expense into another degree. Another degree doesn't necessarily equal a more enjoyable job. Perhaps you have skills and talents that could be put to use in another line of work, maybe a career that involves more travel, working outdoors, etc. Sounds like you would enjoy a job where everyday is different and holds a new challenge. Good luck in your search!

I feel ya... I've worked some shitty, soul-sucking jobs. Maybe you should answer the Office Space high school counsoler quiz: If you had a million dollars, what would you do?

I was totally in that situation.

And I just couldn't take it anymore. So I upa nd quit, with no back up whatsoever.

What happened? well, every job I really wanted, required a Masters degree. And I found out the my state would pay all of my expenses (tuition, living, transportation, etc) for me to go to grad school. So that's where I am now.

LOL I love your office picture!

I feel that well-informed investing is the way to go these days, on paper and real estate. I take a percentage of what I make at my not-so-fulfilling jobs and distribute it to different things: savings, investments, etc. You'd be surprised at how even bits here and there can grow quickly. People can make money even when the economy is down.

Try using your steady job as a temporary tool for financial freedom this way, until you can find something to replace it. Reminding yourself of your goals while you are doing it can help immensely to keep you motivated. There are many great books and sites on asset allocation, at all levels on investing. You can pick the one(s) that work best for you. Amazon has informative reviews, though also remember you are the best judge for your situation.

Rich Dad books, site, message boards, etc.
    David Bach books, site, etc.
Donald Trump books, trumpuniversity site, podcasts, etc.
Suze Orman books, site, tv show, etc

ING Sharebuilder, E*Trade, Emigrantdirect, Vanguard, T.Rowe Price, etc.

    and more.... ^_^

The thing is I am not looking to get rich. I just want a job that pays enough for me to live comfortably and that I don't totally hate. I guess thats what most people want though. I wonder why it so hard to find.

I guess part of my problem is I feel what I do now isn't making a difference. I would love to have a job where I felt that what I do has a real postive effect.

For fulfilling work specifically, there are some good resources.

Anthony Robbins books, message boards, programs (I did 3 fantastic ones, but all it could take is just one)

    also these other books:

    What Color is My Parachute?

    and

What Should I Do With My Life?

    and more...

Yep. Its why I'll never work an office or corporate job again. Underpaid, overworked, underappreciated...all of it. I would be a hooker before I'd do that again...I would feel dirtier whoring myself out to line corporate pockets again then I would whoring myself out to line my own!!

Ideally, what type of work would you want to do, if money/schooling was no object? What areas are you interested in (healthcare, computers/technology, arts, academia, business, etc)?

I'd love to be a physical therapist and perhaps a yoga instructor on the side. It's what I've wanted to do for a long time..I've just never been able to devote myself to school full time. I got my current degree by taking night classes part time. I seriously want to sit down sometime soon and figure out if I can make going back to school full time a reality. I sooo want to get my masters.

On a side note...another job I hated was waitressing. The way people treat waitstaff is insane...we are human beings and deserve to be treated as such LOL. I was so glad to leave that job!

I worked at an autoshop doing admin stuff for about 2 weeks until the manager suggested that I start wearing more revealing clothes to work...he was totally serious. That was pretty shitty. I got my purse, walked out the door and didn't come back.

I worked in clothing store when I was in highschool. The manager basically accused me of stealing when my cash drawer was $3 short. Ummm...yeah....LAME.

Come to think of it...I have worked a lot of different jobs to pay the bills .

haha I was going to suggest yoga instructor certification! Weird, b/c I don't know you, but it seems like something you'd like and be good at. Maybe b/c you've mentioned liking yoga in other posts.

You could always go for yoga certification now, part time while you dance and work your icky day job. Or you could take a risk and quit the day job, and just rely on dancing temporarily while you get certified. I'm the same way; having a day job helps me to do well in the club because it takes the pressure off. But I found that being in school has the same effect as keeping a day job: it still lets you know you have options, and you're working toward something that will make you money, so you don't feel trapped or pressured in the club.

Maybe keep the day job for a few more months while you decide what you want to do for school and where you want to go, and sock away your dancing money for tuition? That would take even more pressure off, b/c you wouldn't have to go into the club thinking "omg my tuition is due".

Would you consider going to school to become a physical therapist assistant? The pay is less than a full PT obviously, but it's still a good salary that you can live on, and PTAs are actually slightly more in demand. And unlike a 5-year DPT program, it's only 2 years at a much lower-priced technical or community college.

I would go back to working with animals. And acting...ideally I'd like to do both. Acting is my passion, and animals are where my heart is. I have never been happier in my life then when I was a vet tech and acting in a theater troupe on the side. If I could afford to go back to that, I would in a HEARTBEAT.

That sounds like a pretty ideal situation CK! I think vet techs should get paid way more then they do! My friend is a vet tech and she barely makes enough money to scrape by...but she likes her job...so sometimes that is worth the sacrifice I guess.

If you don't mind the question - was there a special reason for that, or is it available to anyone? Was it for a special graduate program only? What state is that?

(I want to go to grad school and am having funding issues too).

Sounds like general burnout... I'd advise you to check out this link:
Dealing With Professional Burnout Without Quitting Your Job

My main goal if I were in your position would be to recalibrate my values and goals to see how my day job could contribute. Also, to save up enough money that you *can* quit. My goal with work right now is to get 3-6 months of living expenses saved before trying to invest or anything. Because mentally, I think that knowing I can leave does a lot for being able to go in every day.

I'm hanging out in the office right now posting on SW! Well, that and eating chocolate covered raisins... we had a meeting this morning and ever since then the day's been going by quite slowly... but I still prefer this job to dancing, just miss the exercise...

JUst go to the FAFSA site, and fill out the FAFSA forms, and fill it out. It'll tell you how much you'd be expected to pay.

    http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

For me, it said "0", so the government covered everything.

I never qualified for any aid for my undergrad, but for grad school, the guidelines are much more leniant (and it's all grants, no loans).

It also helps that I'm considered an independant, and made crummy moneyw hen I worked.
