    Default Wood paneling is ugly

It's everywhere in my new place. It's fuggo but I want to paint over it. I'm looking at stuff on the internet and it's all foreign to me. Most I've ever done to my apartment was flip the breaker back on and hook up my cable.

Any easy how to tips that can work for the DIY handicapped?

Can you take it down? Sometimes there is sheet rock behind the wood paneling and it can easily be painted over.

A couple of my gay friends used to pipe and drape the walls of thier rentals- kind of like shower curtains on a grander scale. I found this, too...

Hahahaha me and my bf just had a fight bout this. I LOVE wood paneling, gives everything such a nice woodsy feel and he hates it. He is painting over it at our new house and I'm pissed.

You can paint over it very easily.

Paint over the paneling with KILZ first. It's basicly a primer for hard to paint surfaces. Then paint over that with your chosen paint. Done!

Would you have to paint it back TM? Cuz that would be hard, no?

it can be any brand primer, not just Kilz (although it's good.)

I'd definitely put primer up first, especially if the wood is dark or has a shiny surface. Plus it'll look better with one coat of primer (which is cheaper than paint) and one coat of paint, versus 2 coats of paint. But you might want to do 2 coats anyway.

Did you ask if you could?

Btw, I hate wood paneling if it's too 70s or 80s, but I love wainscoting in old, Shaker style houses.

    but this is fugly:

^ OMG. the first house my ex and I purchased was a 3 bedroom, 2 bath coach house. The entire ..and I do mean ENTIRE house was paneled. We were only going to flip it so we didn't want to invest a lot. I managed to take a dark color panel and with oxy clean (the powered kind mixed with water) ...spray it on ..take a sponge and almost ALL the color came off. It was a white wash afterwards and then I painted over it. Obviously you could still tell that it was paneling under the paint. But it wasn't hideous.

The only real downside with paneling is that it's not too good for insulation. And if there is any plumbing, flood issues it really harbors a lot of mildew. I found this out the hard way. As in a fucking HUGE mushroom was growing out of the wall.

Just paint over it with normal paint after you prime it. It'll cover easier. I would suggest getting textured wall paper but it's expensive and it's not worth doing for a rental property.

She said I could but can't remember if she said if I had to paint it back or not. Mine is the gross pressboard faux wood color.

oh, so it's laminate? You definitely need to prime.

How to you paint it back if it's not painted already?

ugh I have this shit in my kitchen and dining room. I hate it! My home improvement specialist told me that it never looks good painted, so we didn't. I just cover it up with mirrors and big pictures.

Its this gross stuff. I was thinking about doing the kitchen too. I just don't wanna look at it. It's def. pressboard junk. On the left of the kitchen on the other side of the wall is where I want to start. This is a picture of the previous persons stuff in there..that mess isn't mine.

What does she mean by "paint it back". Like, paint it as something else if she wants it? Re-paint/ touch-up when you move out? Strip off the paint and primer and hope that the paneling is okay? Hopefully she wouldn't expect you to pay to have it repaneled? Would it be possible to get her to sign something just incase she wants to screw you over when you move out?

having just painted my kitchen cabinets myself, I will say this...it's a lot harder than it looks and I wouldn't do it if it wasn't a house that I own.

First, you have to take them all off. The easy part.

Then you have to sand and/or prime them all (if you don't have a sander, welcome to hell...at least yours are flat panels)

Then find a place to put them all flat. Paint one side, but be careful that it doesn't drip and well up on the bottom. Do another coat. Let dry a couple of days (because you don't want to flip them over when they aren't 100% dry.) So if you don't have a place to put all the doors and will have to do them in sections, this will take even longer!

Flip, paint the back. Wait a couple more days to completely dry. Do sides, but leave one undone so you can rest it on that side. Paint that side later.

Btw, since I did this on the floor, a lot of my cabinet doors have dog hair imbedded in the paint.

Finally...hang. Hope you have a drill.

This whole process will take at least a week.

At least a wall is done that day.

^^Omg. I have a drill but no sander. Yea maybe I won't be doing the kitchen after all . There is a built in bookcase and linen cabinet with the same ugly paneling. I'll try my luck with the wall. You're kitchen is real nice though. I remember pics.

thanks. I'm happy with the way it turned out, but a lot of blood, sweat and tears went into it. Seriously. I mean this literally. Not just the cabinets, but everything.

In the middle of painting the cabinets I called a couple of cabinet refacers because I didn't want to finish. I hated the color I made them (the stain was called natural beige, but it looked orange) and had to start all over. It was going to be thousands, so I sucked it up and sanded and painted them all again in white. You can't go wrong with white.

You haven't seen ugly wood paneling until you've seen the crap in our bedroom.

I couldn't make this up if I tried.. we bought an old house and the master bedroom had wood paneling, yes the faux pressboard kind, painted PURPLE. We started to take it down to put drywall up and make it look like humans live there, not barney, and I shit you not, there was silver wallpaper behind the purple wood paneling. That room is still a work in progress so I'll go up there in a bit and take some pictures.. then you won't hate your wood paneling so much
