Default Looking for a poetry reading in NYC

I'm going to New York for a few days next week. For this summer class I'm taking, we need to report on a poetry reading. Ottawa has so few, and mostly all the same people. I thought using my time in NYC would be a good idea, but I'm having trouble finding readings with my google searches. Are they all just mostly hosted open mics?

Anyone have any idea how I could find a good one? I'm sure they're all good, but I'd hate to go to NYC and only find what I'd be able to get at home.

i'd try looking up the NYC public library and maybe Village Voice for info. i have to think both will have something lined up at various times but not necessarily the timeframe you'll be there though.

they might have weekend shows in central park (e.g. "shakespeare in the park"), they might have similar poetry readings too.

you could also check barnes & noble's website to see if they have anything scheduled for their megastores in manhattan. the union square one is ginormous!

i'd think your best bet would be the public library's website and a possible reading listed/advertised in the Village Voice. colleges will also host them but they're often student/faculty only. NYU, columbia, Baruch, etc. hth

Yes. I was going to suggest this too. My girlfriend went there and she loved it, been dying to go there myself.

Def. check out the movie "Pinero" before you go to this place. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0261066/ Pinero was one of the co-founder of this place when it started out. People loved his work.

    Little info about him:

yes that's a great movie ^ watched it in my poetry course a couple semesters ago. Edwin Torres is another great poet who performs there occasionally, he writes in half english/half spanish because he grew up learning both at the same time and never separated the two, his poetry is pretty neat. Nicole Blackman has read there, but she hasn't come out with anything new in YEARS to my knowledge, which is a shame because she is absolutely amazing. I have the book "Aloud: voices from the nuyorican poet's society", and I love it- it's got like 30 different poets in it.

My first thought was Nuyorican's too. You've gotta go.
