    Default Dead birds

My cats wont stop bringing in birds! And it's not like the just drop the dead bird somewhere o the floor, they take it to my kiddos room, slaughter it, whipping it into a bloody feathery frenzy and scare the shit out of my kid!

I can't keep his door closed, they know how to open it!

He's started keeping a nerf dart gun by his bed at night to scare them off. Aside from how nasty and un-sanitary it is, it's totally freaking him out!

We bought the owl. We close up the doggy door at night (that's how they come and go). We make sure they have PLENTY of food. But they love it...they hunt and hunt. It's mostly the female cat who does it, and she the worst about the slaughtering. The boy cat will actually eat them, and rarely brings them into the house.

Although last night while my husband I were have a very serious talk, he came in with one, dropped it right at our feet and gave this little wimpy meow.

But the girl cat...holy shit balls. It's bad.

So what do I do? I don't want to give her away, but I can't keep cleaning up bird gut and blood from my kids bedroom and bathroom three times a week. It's getting to be too much! Any ideas?

We started locking them in the house at night because it seemed like they were bringing them in around the same time (4 am-ish) every day.

But now, while it's cut back to maybe a bird a week, it happens any time. In fact, the one the boy cat brought in last night, I swear he had hidden it somewhere and brought it us later on....gag.

I even tried putting bells on collars, but they would sit right next to us at night and scratch their necks, making the bells jingle in our ears...the hubby swears they did it on purpose. I don't doubt it.

*sigh* I really don't know what to do with them now...

My ex's dad would lock the cat OUTSIDE of the house during the day. By night-time, all the cat wanted to do was come in to hang out and nap. That way, they can do their icky hunting during the day, do whatever they will with what they catch, and be done with it.

If that doesn't work and they still want to be outside cats, maybe lock them outside during the day and inside during the night?

BTW, how the heck do they open the door?

I have a dog too, so I can't lock it up during the day, I can get away with it at night because he sleeps.

    Ugh.

Oh, they jump up, grab onto the handle of the door and hang on until it pops the latch. Weird little kitties.

Jeez... you either have some seriously sadistic cats or some that are VERY determined to deliver presents. Send them to the North Pole to help out Santa?

Would you be willing to let your son have a lock on his door? Maybe some sort of child-proof thing, even? Have a heavy enough box for him to scoot in front of his door to block it from opening? Heavy enough for cats but not too heavy for you in case you need to get in.

Anyway to train the dog to chase them out when they bring something in?

Hahahaha! We've actually started saying "Get the cat!" whenever she brings bird in, so my dog associates that with the "it's time to chase the kitty" game. Buuuut, he wont chase the cat unless he hears us say "get the cat" so he just dances around all excited and looks at us like "Ohmygodhurryupandandsayit!!!!"

Yah, the little shits love us very much. Well, the boy loves us very much, the girl just likes to make a nasty mess and watch us clean it up.

How does the cat get back in the house after being outside?

This is one of the reasons mine are indoor only. Outside of the ick factor....it disrupts the balance of nature( cats arent native creatures here) and there are too many dangers out there.

I vote to keep the cat inside only. He'll live a much longer healthier life and you wont have to deal with corpses as gifts

It's often almost impossible to turn a wild outdoor cat into an indoor cat. We tried these with a Siamese cat and he howled nonstop day after day after day until we finally gave in because he was miserable

But if you are talking about a new kitten, then I definitely agree. They don't miss what they don't know.

It all depends on the cat. My male was an outside cat when we found him and he howled to go out for awhile. It takes a lot of patience, but it can be done. He's now perfectly happy going out onto the screened in porch and spending the rest of his time curled up on the bed.

Siamese are notoriously VERY vocal...indoor OR outdoor. That may have been part of your problem.

But yes there will always be one that just doesnt tame down. Theres a stray I feed that I tried to bring in...but he was WAY too aggressive towards my other cats so I couldnt. Not to say he wouldnt be ok as an indoor cat in a house without other animals though..I just couldnt do it.

Cam, I would love to have them both as indoor cats. But since wwe have the doggy door for the dog....I can't stop them from coming and going. The girl cat actually adopted us, she just walked in the doggy door one day, f ell in love with my boy and they have been living happily ever after since.

So...I'm not trying to shut down ideas here, but the fact is, I cannot stop them from going in and out except at night when I lock the doggy door. It makes me sad how much they kill.

Can you block them off from the room with the doggy door during the day?Or maybe put up a covered kitty outside playpen like this: http://www.catsplay.com/kittywalk.php3

So they can be outside but not hurt anything or be hurt. You can put them in it during the day(with plenty of food and water and a shaded area so they dont get overheated) and be inside all night when the doggie door is locked.

Where there is a will there is a way!!!

Cam the cat playpen is kinda neat...not a bad idea.

We raised the dog using a doggy door, we're renting this house, so having "retraining" accidents doesn't seem like a good idea. He's so used to being able to go and out when he wants.

And I can't lock them out, AZ temps reaching over 100 every day, it doesn't seem kind. But maybe keeping it locked up for parts of the day, like the morning and evening...mid-day leaving it open...and then I could just shorten the time that it's open each week until they all get used to it. That's a thought. Maybe?

i don't know if this is humane or not... but everytime they bring it in, you can squirt them with a tiny water-pistol.

There's a brand of Doggy Door that only unlocks when a dog with a special collar on wants to go through.

oh holy crap! That seems like the perfect solution! The doggy still gets his freedom to come and go and the cats can't bring any more critters inside! Yay!

    Thank you much pretty lady.

LOL, no it didn't! My kiddo already keeps a nerf dart gun in his room, and the thing is, we never catch them bringing them in...well sometimes, but mostly I wake up to my kiddo yelling "She's killing it!!!" -good god that's so sad- And I don't think it's mean to use a water spritz when needed...not really.

But the electronic door idea rocks, that's the first time I've heard of that.
