Default Makeup experts: Foundation for not so perfect skin?

I need a new foundation and I don't know what finish to go with.

I usually choose a dewy product and use shimmer blush because I think it looks glowing and youthful. But I was painting my house the other day with high-hiding flat finish paint and I thought, "Wait a minute...flat finish hides...high-gloss shows imperfections. Holy crap!"

I have sort of rough textured skin with large pores, some scars, etc. Would I be better off getting a matte foundation and using non-shimmer products? Am I just highlighting the flaws in my skin?

Stick foundations are good for a lot of cover. Go browse the counters and ask for some samples.

Yes, only use the shimmer as a subtle highlight. I recommend MAC's Honour blush. Just the right about of shimmer and a little gold tone.

for full opaque coverage use a concealer first then apply a matte-finish liquid foundation with a foundation brush(makes a huge difference), then apply powder on top with a powder puff. if well done it shouldn't look painted or caked on!! this is what i learned at make up school..

^^^ Yup... however, I've learned that if you're using a liquid foundation that should go on first, then concealer (applied with a brush as well)-makes a huge difference. When you apply concealer first, the foundation has a tendency to "wipe" it away...

Estee Lauder makes a total coverage foundation that is genius...comes in a tube and many top makeup artists swear it's their secret-weapon.

I've always read that shimmer covered flaws by diffusing light, then last year I read an article that said we were highlighting our flaws, so I'm a bit confused too.

I've tried tons of foundations and seem to have good luck going with a semi-matte foundation and just using a shimmer highlighter on my cheekbones and temples. For reference I'm 32 and have pretty good skin for my age, but huge pores on my nose and some texture issues on my cheeks. All the dewey products really emphasize the pores and settle into every line on my forehead making them super obvious, which pisses me off cause they are so fine that you can barely see them without foundation.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

I was just reading makeup alley's reviews of estee lauder's double wear and it sounds perfect for you. There is a girl at my work who has horrible acne but once she puts this on you can't really tell. I think I'll be picking up a sample of this soon. I use MAC studio fix liquid and am able to get good coverage when I layer and apply with a brush.

Yes! The estee lauder foundation is amazing!
Also, if you are going for more pricey department-store makeup counter brands (estee, prescriptives, etc) try Clinque's Clarifying makeup. It's a matte finish that covers pores and scars.
It was recommended to me as a good cover for my BA scars when I worked. Hell, it works for that, it's amazing on the face. It doesn't sweat off either.

I know some people "highlight" under their eyes, and frosty shadows can emphasize creases, and if you put it under your eyes you get the racoon look. I think the dewey look is good on the cheeks only.
