Default Wearing a wig to grow real over processed hair out

My hair is fried from constant bleaching and hair extensions and heat styling for 4-5 years.
It is over processed and needs to be left alone.
I was thinking of purchasing a synthetic wig and wearing that for a while to leave my hair alone and promote hair growth by just not touching it.
Has anyone else ever done this?
    Any results?
    HELP!

a wig will cause friction on your damaged hair and cause it to break off. counterproductive. get a good haircut, and use a few hot oil treatments.

How will it cause it to break off?

friction. thing about it, if you take your hand and rub damaged hair it will break off. it will even do this to healthy hair after a long enough time frame.

cut your hair, then get a wig if you need too.

you could also get extensions as long as you go to someone reputable and take good care of them. extensions can be awful on your hair if done/treated badly, but if they are done/treated correctly it can actually be good for your hair because you're treating it more gently, not fucking with it, and some say the weight of the fake hair on the real hair causes a tension that increases blood circulation that then causes your hair to grow in more quickly. not sure how much I belive that.

also-- go get yourself some hair pills. GNC has some that has less fillers than the walmart ones.

edit: you would need to cut off the old crappy hair to do this.

If it's damaged hair, there's no saving it, no matter how many treatments and babying you do.

The damage needs to be cut off, then pamper the new growth.

As I wrote above, I have been wearing extensions for 4-5 years.
I have always had super long 18" bleach blonde hair.
My hair will NOT grow! Just break off.
I fucked. my hair up so badly with bleaching that the top of my head the hairs are 1 inch long from being burnt off by bleach on the hair too long that should of only been applied at the roots.
The underneath is 4-5 inch long its a BIG mess.
It is all uneven and really really bad condition.
My roots have grown out about almost an inch thick now I have only been wearing up it up with no products for almost a week now.
And going to the salon for a deep treatment once a week.
My hair is like cotton candy.
I don't know what to do, pull a Britney Spears and shave it all off?

I've never had extensions and have only bleached my hair once but I think the most logical thing to do is to cut all of the damage off (but don't shave it!). Wash your hair with a shampoo brush to promote circulation. And go ahead a wear a good wig, since all of the damaged hair is cut off. You'll have a "boy" haircut for a while but it'll be much better than being bald. I just read that the average persons' hair grows about 6 inches a year.

Forever Young wigs look really nice. Good luck hun <3 <3

You said you have an inch of growth? So your hair IS growing just very slowly? On average your hair should grow 1/2-1inch a month. I know you probably want to stay blonde, but while your waiting for you hair to grow out do you think you could cut it and dye the remaining damaged hair to match your natural hair then wear a wig just to work? I too have fried my hair to the point where it felt like wet spaghetti. I cut it extremely short and dyed it dark brown to match my roots. When it grew out a few inches (it was above my chin before) I bought some wefts of extensions and made my own clip in extensions to fit my hair length/style. Maybe you could try the same?

I shaved my over processed hair my freshman year of college and wore nice wigs to work. No one ever knew. Google "lace front wigs". It was the best thing I ever did for my hair. I think it'll be traumatizing, though, going from 18 inch extension to shaved. Maybe a short cut?

What is your hair's natural texture? Straight, wavy, curly?

I wear a wig to work to stop heat styling my hair for work every single day. Its the best thing I ever did for my hair. Even now that my hair is purple on one side its the healthiest its ever been in a long time. My hair is growing and I have hardly any split ends anymore. When not at work I don't wash my hair as often and let it air dry.

I love wigs and half wigs.

I noticed you aren't talking about saving your damaged hair...just growing it out.

The friction thing doesn't really apply as long as your hair is clean and moisturized underneath. A mesh stocking cap is great to keep ur hair in place and from rubbing all on the inside of the wig without getting super hot like a stocking cap.

agreed, if you put some leave in conditioner on your hair under the wig after you cut the dead stuff off youll be fine, just be sure to moisturize.

for some reaosn this makes me think of the victoria era when all the men and woman wore wigs all the time and since they did their real hair fell otu and most of them were bald even the ladies!

does anyone have any advice for finding a synthetic wig that doesn't look disgustingly fake? I live in a small town and there are no wig places anywhere around. I have been looking into wigs online, but don't really know what I should be looking for in a wig...

lol... all powdery and shit. Ewwies. Mental imagery. Ahhhh!

I think that was more because they were super nasty and had rats and bugs and fungus and filth in their wigs. My skin is crawling to think about that.... and I bet the skin ran right off their scalps due to it.

I would say human hair lace front wigs are the way to go after you figure out what color and style you want.

I didn't know you did a lace front VS. How long did your wig last? What company/website did you buy from?

This was 7 years ago. I bought it from a store in Jacksonville, Florida. It was difficult because I had NO hair for about 2 months. I had to kind of rig it with adhesive and pray for the best. It lasted a LONG time though, probably 6 months of wearing it to work 4 times a week.

No, I mean only washing your hair once a week. I could see how that would work for a non bar employee, but I know my hair smells like titty bar when I get home.

I agree. I absolutely have to wash my hair (and muh body) when I get off work. I can't stand falling asleep with icky stripper smell.

I'm dealing with some damage myself. My hair is pretty long and I've been dyeing it for a decade. It always handled that well, and stayed healthy and strong, but about 6 months ago it just started breaking off and getting all nasty. I should mention I discovered the joys of flat ironing about a year ago.

I hate to chop mine off. I'm trying to halt any future damage and sort of control what I have already. I only style on days I'm working (4 shift a week) and I try to only blowdry, or curl or flat iron, never blowdry and use heat tools. I actually wore a phony pony last friday, I didn't feel like messing with my hair that morning, and I felt like any break from heat styling helps, even if it's just a day here and there. I do have a decent wig I might use once this coming week.
I'm confused, but the Chewbacca Truffle Shuffle cleared it up. - Emily
