    Default SSRIs and weight gain

I wish I had never been introduced to SSRIs because I feel that I am dependent on them now.
I have been on them on and off (but mostly on) since I was 14. I started taking Luvox (fluvoxamine) when I was 20 and from 20 to 28 I have gained 7 kgs. I know that I was very skinny to begin with and Im still small but this pisses me off.
I exercise a lot and eat healthy and Im not as small as I want to be and I think it's the stupid medication.

Has anyone else got this problem?

Anyone know of SSRIs that are less likely to cause weight gain?
I want to get off these completely now I have decided but in case that's not possible I want to be on one that at least doesn't cause weight gain.

I'm curious if you're working out and eating right then what is the thing in SSRI's that actually cause weight gain in the midst of a healthy lifestyle?

Paxil made me gain like 20lbs quick and Celexa no crazy changes at all.

I've done a bit of research and it said the reason they cause weight gain is not known.

    http://www.netnutritionist.com/fa.htm

Many people are not aware that weight gain is one of the most common side effects associated with many antidepressants prescribed today. In fact, medications such as Fluoxetine (Prozac®) and Buproprion HCL (Wellbutrin®) have actually been marketed for obesity treatment.

Antidepressants can affect weight in several ways:

They may increase or decrease basal metabolic rate without changing caloric intake.
They may affect hormonal changes and increase appetite.

Default Re: SSRIs and weight gain

    Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

SSRIs comprise one of the major classes of antidepressants currently being prescribed by primary care physicians. At first, SSRIs were thought to be associated with weight loss and reduced appetite. For a while, they were even marketed as anti-obesity drugs. It is now known that long-term use of SSRIs is associated with weight gain.

The reason that SSRIs contribute to weight gain is not known. Although it was a widely held belief that drugs that increase serotonin output also decrease hunger, this does not seem to be the case. Patients using SSRIs often report symptoms of hypoglycemia (weakness, dizziness, frequent hunger, and headaches) when they do not eat. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may indicate hyperinsulinemia (elevation of insulin in the blood).

The five most common SSRIs currently prescribed in the United States today are as follows:

    Citalopram (Celexa®)
    Fluoxetine (Prozac®)
    Fluvoxamine (Luvox®)
    Paroxetine (Paxil®)
    Sertraline (Zoloft®)
Paroxetine (Paxil®) appears to have the most significant impact on weight gain of all of the SSRIs. Studies show that patients using Paxil experience an increase in breast size as well as weight gain and increased serum prolactin. One case report linked cravings for carbohydrates with Citalopram (Celexa®) while other studies showed an average weight gain over time of 15-20 pounds with Sertraline (Zoloft), Fluoxetine (Prozac®), and Citalopram (Celexa®).

Hopefully by the end of the year I can be off this stuff. It would be nice not to pop a pill everyday for my happiness. Thanks for the info on that.

Me too. But I did some googling and realised that it is probably because of stupid luvox. Im really pissed off about it too because my doctor never told me this and I would not have ever taken it if I knew that was a side effect.

Im not attributing the entire weight gain to luvox. I know some of it is definately muscle gain too.

I was on 10 mg of lexapro for 10 months. In that time, I gained 10 lbs - a LOT on my 5'4" frame. I am an avid cyclist (at least 300 miles/week) and I work out at the gym 5 days a week on top of that. My diet is impeccable. Needless to say, the weight gain makes absolutely no sense - other than being on an SSRI.

I quit the lex, cold turkey, two weeks ago. I couldn't take it anymore. No matter what I did, I could not get back into my jeans, and it disgusts me. THAT was making me depressed!

I am still on 300 mg of wellbutrin, and I have noticed in the last few days, that my appetite is gone, and my energy level is getting higher each day. My doc perscribed lexapro because I have PMDD... but I'd rather be a monster for two days each month than this.

What's really frustrating is that I specifically asked if lexapro is associated with weight gain, and he assured me that I had nothing to worry about. But, like others have said, if you check any boards where people post about lexapro, it is A VERY COMMON side effect.

My advice is to stay far, far away from this stuff unless you have absolutely no other options. It is awful. I am hoping that I'll get back to my pre-lexapro size quickly.. because I am not happy

Also, I don't advocate going off of an SSRI cold turkey. It was probably not the wisest thing I've done. I had some freaky withdrawal effects for a few days. But I did what I felt I needed to do.

i work out a lot too. the thing is this weight gain creeped up gradually and i didn't even realise it was the luvox. coz ive been on it for about 8 years. but i have gradually gained weight over these years. im very unhappy about it too.

what is wellbutrin? is it an SSRI? does it not cause weight gain?

The exact same thing happened to me -granted, I was on it a much shorter period than you. Because I cycle so much, I just figured my jeans didn't fit because my thighs and butt were getting more muscular.. how's that for denial? It definitely crept up on me too. It was like one morning I woke up and was like, "wtf happened?!"

Wellbutrin works WONDERFULLY for me. It increases the amount of dopamine in your brain (the other "happy" chemical), and does not affect seratonin. Its side effects are the opposite of most SSRIs - weight loss, energy gain, loss of appetite, and increased interest in sex (the best one!) I've been on 300 mg for two years now, for depression. I wasn't "depressed" when my doc gave me lexapro - just complaining about the pre-menstrual lunatic I became each month. But like I said.. I'll take it.

yes- it is nice to know we're not alone

Wellbutrin works for depression, and its off-label uses include smoking cessation and obesity treatment. However, it does not work for anxiety. Some people experience increased anxiety with wellbutrin, actually.

Have you tried going off of the SSRI at all, or have you been on it 8 years straight? And, are you on it for both depression AND anxiety?

No Im on it for GAD - generalised anxiety disorder and OCD. I have had periods where I have had a break from it for 6 months at a time but always seem to end up back on it. Actually that was before I went on Luvox.

I wish I had never touched the stuff. I was only 14 when I was prescribed my first SSRI and I feel angry about this because if I knew what I know now I never would have touched it.
I hate being addicted/dependent on it.

If I dont find a solution to the weight gain Im going to have even more problems coz I am recovering from bulimia but a relapse is very imminent right now coz Im obsessing over my body in a big way and feel like I have no control over it coz of the SSRIs.

    Would a lower dose help?
I am currently on 150mg of luvox but in the past I have been on 100 mg and even 50 mg.

I had pretty bad anxiety back in the early and mid 2000's, and the docs would first always script an SSRI or a SNRI as the "first line of defense." I never found out if they would have caused weight gain because the dang things made my anxiety so much worse, or caused me to rapid-cycle, that I couldn't stick it out. I had to switch docs more than once because they wouldn't listen to the issues I was having. It made no sense to take something that made the initial problem worse!

I found that a low dose of a benzo, when combined with relaxation techniques and such, nipped it in the bud. No weight gainPor cognitive impairment, no addiction, nor side effects at all, come to think of it. One doc wanted me to take antipsychotics and mood stabilizers for PTSD-related anxiety. Never mind that I was in grad school and she couldn't seem to grasp why being a fog-brain was bad. *head on desk* The point of my ramble is not to endorse benzos, but rather that I had to navigate through the mental health system and find what worked for me, then find a doc who was willing to treat it as such. The prevailing and popular means of treatment are not always the best, and, for some people, they are the worst things possible.

My friend gained 100 (!) pounds on an SSRI. She just lost all the weight and is back to 130 from 230. I'll try and get her to come to this thread and tell her story!

    that would be great!!

Sigh!! Well I have reduced my dose with my doctors permission. Ive gone from 150mg a day to 100mg. Then I will go down to 50mg in another week. I will see how I go at that dose and then discuss stopping them altogether with him.

I know and Im not attributing it entirely to the medication. Plus I have more muscle now so I know it weighs more.

It's amongst the reasons for me wanting to get off this medication but its not the only reason.

Yup, I am down to half of what I was taking. I was gaining but at least I'm just maintaining now. I'd like to lose 5 pounds but it's been a challenge. I've been on a lot of SSRI's and from what I understand Effexor (the one I am on) has minimal weight gain side effects. I also understand Wellbutrin is another good one for those who worry about weight gain but it made my anxiety unbearable. I didn't gain weight on Prozac either but it turned me into a raging bitch when I was on it.
