    Default Yoga classes + Stripping..

I took a yoga class today for the first time since December! It's been so long, I've done yoga type stretches and poses at home since I last took a class, but the last time I took a class was through my university and I was doing it three times a week for class credit.

I've done nothing but belly dance and lots of stripping since my last class, so when I went today, I was REALLY off. I kept arching my back instead of tucking my butt under, it's a horrible habit. Even when I would consciously try to tuck my navel toward my spine and my tailbone under, I would stick my ass out like a stripper, kind of embarrassing during cat pose when I was trying to do the opposite... and chair pose, and downward dog... gawd I did everything all wrong. The instructor even asked if i had a "dance background" after the class and told me she used to have the same problem because she was a dancer (don't think she meant stripper though).

So.... for those of you who do yoga regularly- how do you remind yourself to stay in alignment and not look like a stripper doing yoga? I suppose it's just a matter of practice, but I'm definitely going to be practicing poses at home before I go to another class to make sure I don't look sexual.

In colorado I plan on taking classes at a studio, not just a gym, because I want to get really good, I feel so amazing after class, I forgot how good it feels! It will also help lengthen and tone my muscles and strengthen my core, which is important because I gain muscle from dancing and my posture gets all thrown off from the heels.

also-- I did the search function but there are no posts on looking like a slut in warrior stance.

The pains that have burned me and scarred my soul, it was worth it, for having been allowed to walk where I've walked, which was to hell on earth, heaven on earth, back again, into, under, far in between, through it, in it, and above."

I would tell the teacher you feel like your alignment is off in some of the poses, and ask him/her to help you during class. They can come by and give you corrections. When the instructor gives general directions, see if you can apply it to your body.

I've been doing yoga for the past eight weeks for class credit, myself. I hadn't taken a formal class in so long. I can relate to feeling really awkward doing poses. I just remember to really let my body relax and try not to flex so much. Honestly, for me, learning the breathing techniques can be the hardest part. I can't believe how awful I must be while on stage. Just keep focusing on your core and your sense of balance will come back to you. Remember, practice makes better.

Oh god. Yes. Pilates is even worse. Check my ass out in my ratty sweats with perpetually pointed toes tilting my chin back while doing leg lifts.

It happens when I stop concentrating on what I'm doing.

    Excellent choice of words
I just started doing yoga and pilates again. Whoa, I had no idea how dancing had changed my bodyand posture. I can't even lay flat on the mat because of my "stripper" ass! Yeah - that curvy spot in my lower back that looks Soooooo hot on stage? Not good for pilates. I can't even lay down without looking like I'm about to tuck a single in my garter.
I guess the good side to all of this is that since dancing is hell on your body, working through all the yoga moves until you look less stripper-rific will counteract the posture issues caused by 8inch heels.
