Default What do freshness dates really mean?

I am a compulsive 'best by' date checker. The whole thing just makes me nervous, especially with foods that (to me) ALWAYS taste off. Like milk. But here I am, having worked 3 nights in a row, eating a sammich with bread that was 'best by' two days ago. It's not stale or moldy and I haven't been able to get to the grocery to replace it. I know I won't die from bread, but really, what's the leeway on those dates?

I really bad at paying attention to those dates. If its not mouldy and doesn't smell funny then I eat it and I've always been fine. Food naturally as ways of telling us that it's unsafe to eat ie. mould. Sometime I think food companies shift the use by date a few days early to cover their own ass and to encourage more sales.

Yea, you're fine..you can start to tell when bread starts to get a little old, after the date when it gets more drier around the edges of the white part. It will look different than the rest of the bread...

Hmm now i can totally imagine you running to see what the edges of your bread look like. lol

I am completely anal about "best buy" dates and "sell by" dates. As long as the bread isn't moldy or hard, it's fine.

No! If you consume something past it's expiration date you'll die!!!!

Me and my bf fight about this one all the time. He thinks it's conspiracy to get people to buy more. I think the cows whisper to the farmer when they're being milked, "July 22nd" Little Jerry Sienfeld there.

Sell-by dates are for the store. It's usually good for a little while after that. I know my Dad works for a company that gets food the grocery stores are about to throw away, mostly baked goods. Like pies. NOM. They are fine. Expiration dates, however, you should watch a little closer.

Yha sell by dates you can usually get a week out of. When stores don't sell something by that date they can give it to food banks and the people need food can go pick it up.

Expiration....I usually don't risk it unless I REALLY want that sour cream or something. Maybe a couple days.

Eggs, for example, keep for a really long time - WAY past their 'expiration date'. Think about it, it's a hermetically sealed container.

in my opinion if it looks fine,
    smells fine
and i have a little nibble and it tastes fine, it's good to go.

i have been known to pick the moudly bits off bread before toasting it... waste not want not!

Eggs are still fresh if you put them in water and they either lie flat at the bottom of the pan or tilt up on end a little. They're pretty iffy if they point straight up. Don't eat them if they float!

Most of those are *sell by* dates, not expiration dates. Or rather, if it's an item like bread or perishables (dairy products etc) the date is for selling by: that is, the grocery store has to sell it to you by then. Bread's sell by date is usually only a few days after the date when it hits the shelf.

The thing about perishables is that it's very obvious when they go off. Bread molds visibly or gets dry; cheese and dairy products will get moldy or smell off. And it happens at a fairly random time -- sooner if it's been heated and then cooled, like in a hot car. I've seen muffins which were moldy before their date and eaten perfectly good cheese two months after its date. So don't worry about this stuff -- it'll usually be obvious.

Expiration dates are usually found on packaged goods that are shelf-stable, like cans and packets of chips. I tend to be a little more careful with those -- although I'm told by people who work in grocery stores that they're dated early and will actually go bad much later, due to store economics.

In China, everything had a production date. I thought that was cool. You could tell actually how fresh it was, not how fresh they wanted you to think it was.
