    Default Should I feel pain?

    I've noticed something recently...

I don't feel pain. I feel pressure and stiffness... but not pain. I fell off my bike again today (stupid ditches) and my riding partner asked if I was okay about 100 times. I was fine. I felt nothing. I've cracked ribs, I've raised massive bruises, I've knocked my head on a ceiling so hard I was bleeding and had a huge knot...

and each time I laughed and went, "That was stupid!" or rubbed my head because the pressure was making me dizzy.

I remember I used to feel pain. Things used to hurt.

    Nothing hurts any more.

    What happened?

I don't know? I've been super depressed... has my body decided to give up, too?

I fall... I feel embarassment.. I feel love.. I feel sad...

    I don't feel physical pain.

There was an episode like this on Grey's Anatomy. I don't remember what was actually wrong with the kid that couldn't feel pain but it was something that needed surgery.

wow... i just felt really stupid typing that. I know TV isn't real but it might be worth visiting a doc for.

When you're depressed, you tend to disconnect from your body. When you were happier, were you more able to feel pain?

Nope. That's the thing... I can't recall feeling pain for about a year now.

I was able to disconnect pain from my life while I was depressed. In fact that's where a lot of my self-injury came into play. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS IN ANY WAY! It's a part of my life I'm not too proud of. But it just goes to show that depression can really drive you into things you never thought was possible.

While I HAVE heard of some conditions where the ability to feel pain is permanently lost, and there's danger, I tend to think this probably is just a combination of adrenaline/depression.

I'm similiar to you, in culinary school, my chef must have yelled at me a hundred times when he caught me removing things from the oven with my bare hands. It just didnt occur to me that thats supposed to be uncomfortably hot and painful.

Also, if you weren't focusing on the pain, it tends to be experienced less. At least with me anyways. I'm OK until i actually ADMIT that this must be pain. After that, its pointless trying to get me to do anything but whine. You've probably been distracted on other things, not the sensation of falling, cracking a rib, whatever.

    But hten, I'm no dr....

It's possible to block out a vast amount of pain, and doing so can *cause* depression (I had serious emotional problems when my wrists were so bad that I couldn't feel them.) So if you have had a physical problem in the last year, the chicken may have come before the egg, so to speak.

Anyway, mostly I'd seriously suggest seeing an acupuncturist or at least a massage practitioner. Ideally acupuncturist as they know a lot about nerves!

Yeah, I don't know.... like what you're saying is the same symptoms. I feel heat, but I don't feel pain from the heat? I get blisters and feel cracked skin, but not the pain from that. I feel THINGS and I go 'this should hurt'... but it doesn't. It simply doesn't.

I've even admitted it's supposed to hurt. Nobody else I know can even breathe with two cracked ribs. I did POLE TRICKS today and went.. oohh... my side is throbbing... maybe that should hurt?

I think that's WEIRD! I hate going to the doctor, and I broke a rib falling like five feet onto a bar (I was bartending and stood on a ladder to grab something, tripped and fell on the bar ouch) and I put off going to the hospital although I did leave work. The next day I woke up in AGONIZING ass pain. and that was only one rib!

SO im new, and a newbie here or whatever, but this happened to a friend of mine. He ended up losing all pain sensation over his entire body and when he went to finally get it checked out super later than when he first noticed, they told him there was serious internal damage, (from what im not sure, but he mentioned like falling, bumping hard into things, and that those things he never realized did in fact damage him but he was unaware)

in any case.. it is serious and maybe you should check this out:

^ its an extreme story, but its an example of the few people walking around not feeling pain.

I don't feel pain either. Different people have different pain thresholds. Some can't handle a needle prick while others can break ribs and be fine. I look at it this way, once you experience something it doesn't hurt as much the second time, right? I also think it's possible for the pain to be interpreted emotionally, you know, feeling depressed instead of hurting. I know whenever I hurt myself, I'm usually more cranky and snappy than bending over in pain. I'm depressed too, so maybe this stuff goes together? I wouldn't be surprised if it caused physical numbness too.

Oh golly I thought that was the same thing? When you crack a rib is it just like bruised? Still sucks though I'm sure, yowza. Oh and BTW there's nothing they can do for a broken rib either, xcept give you pain killers and a support wrap. Lame!!

What... I was wearing leathers and Draggin jeans! I don't ride without at least that. And I cracked my ribs during training... you knew about that!

I rode my new bike into a ditch... but that's because I was going like 10 and had a new rear tyre at night that I didn't compensate for during a tight turn. Bah. That was more a drop than a fall though. The bike and I were both fine... but yeah... I was wearing gear. My jacket didn't even get scuffed in the fall. When I fell though, my leg hit the sidewalk really hard and swelled a bit. I don't think leather could've stopped that.

    I always wear gear!!

Have you had any traumatic experiences in your life where you taught yourself how to be numb to pain? Some people learn this after different types of physical assault. If so, you might want to look into something cranio-sacral or deep-tissue manual therapies to help unlock you so to speak. If you go the manual therapy route, you will get a lot of emotional release.
