    Arrow I Need Makeup Help!

There's a woman I work with who likes to use a beautiful medium purple for eyeshadow. She puts it on real thick, as if she was using it wet, and she uses a lot of it. Sort of an 80's look, actually. Very glam. I *LOVE* it.

When I asked her what kind it was, she said it was MAC. So yesterday I went to Mac and got a white and a purple (she said she used two colors and blended them herself). I tried to use them last night for work, and the colors were just not dark enough. I wasn't sure that these particular shadows could be used wet. The guy at the counter apparently didn't quite understand what I meant when I explained how the shadow looked on the woman.

I went to a different MAC, this time a counter in a Macy's and the lady told me that this particular eyeshadow can't be used wet or it will look terrible. She did show me a glittery shadow that can be used wet.. but I SWEAR this girl's shadow was not glittery at all - just a solid color. I couldn't return this shadow at the counter, have to return it at the mall near my club where I bought it.

The MAC counter lady suggested I try Sephora there for a darker shadow. The makeup lady at Sephora was helpful except she completely dismissed my "I don't want any glitter!!" and continued to put it on me, saying it wouldn't come off on anyone. Ya, right. After she took the stuff off me with makeup remover I still have glitter on my cheekbones. I could see it reflected in the sunlight off the inside of my glasses. Then I touched my face and it was still coming off on my finger.

So I didn't buy anything at Sephora.

Anyone have any suggestions on what brand of shadow to use that will give me the look I want?

I am not a huge pigmented eyeshadow fan usually (other than neutrals), but when I have needed them for certain occasions I bought from http://pureluxecosmetics.com. They have everything under the sun regarding eyeshadow. I know it isn't something you can just buy right away but they work well, they have a ton of shades, and they have some very heavy pigments. Most of them if not all can be foiled and applied wet.

For purples: http://pureluxecosmetics.com/page19.html They have some matte too.

Otherwise I have used plain old Wet n' Wild and NYX as well.

I am sure other posters may have better suggestions!

You know you can ask for pigment samples at MAC, don't you? Just try the purples until you find the right one.

ETA: ooh, or buy a lot of samples online and try them out. Cheaper and more fun, IMO.

It wasn't a matter of the color, it was how the the makeup went on. I don't want something sheer... I want it BOLD, glam... in other words, very obvious in a very dark club.

Let me see if I can find an example:

    (Top left)

See how the color is completely opaque in that top left pic? Bold? Bright? Yah. That.

    Checking those! Thank you.

Well, you'd need a good primer to get vibrant colors like that. Or a shadestick base.

Recommend Urban Decay eye primer, for bringing out colors, and it also helps it STAY put. I have quite a few MAC colors... What shade of purple are you looking for? Are you looking for a pinkish purple(stars n rockets) or a blu-er purple?

If you tell me what your looking for, I can take swatches of some colors/products that I have for ya... Was it a pigment, or an actual eyeshadow?

Also, for good opaque colors, the powdery ones go on a LOT thicker than a pressed shadow, I have some bright "mineral makeups" that work well for the opaque things-better than my mac eyeshadows or urban decay things.

^^^Seconded on the Urban Decay Primer Potion. I can't seem to function without it. I make it point to never, ever run out.

Yep! THough I don't use it all teh time, only on bright, opaque styles.

For street makeup or natural things, i just cheat and use a mac paintpot to prime, STill stays put, but isn't quite as strong.

I love urban decay with a flaming passion.

Okay, will get some Urban Decay primer.

    More blue.

I have no idea, she didn't say, I assume a pigment.

The site I ordered samples from, it's mineral pigment stuff.

    Thanks

Top row from L---URban Decay, Last Call-probably too red for what you want. Urban Decay Asphyxia-probably too light, but blends well with one of hte deeper purples like Urban Decay Flash.

Bottom row from L--- MAC stars n rockets- pinker than what you want, i think. Urban Decay-crash--- Less metallic than Flash, a little bit more sheer. Victorias Secret-Beauty Rush, Tons o Plum--softer, a little more grey, and a bit more sheer.

OUt of those, your best bet is the Urban Decay Flash and Asphyxia.

THough, depending on the style of hte makeup, I might reocmmend getting a deeper blue, or a mineral one, and blending that with the Flash.

But flash is your perfect metallic non glittery blue-purple. And wiht the primer, or applied wet, it would have the sort of coverage you want.

And in the interests of thoroughness, this is what i meant with the blue.

COlors used---VS beauty rush flashblack, around bottom of lid, blended into MAC freshwater, UD flash, and Asphyxia up top.

Sorry its all sloppy--I'd been having a beauty day tonight, so my face is covered in green face mask, and its not blended well.

But yeah, thats the UD primer, and the colors... IS that about what you wanted?

I too would suggest the Primer. I have some MAC primer. I bought that off Ebay though, you cant' buy that in stores.

As far as that strong, opaque color, maybe buy Kryolone brand (sp). It's theatrical makeup

    Yes, yes, yes! Deep color.

My brain is full.. learned a lot already! Feel kind of silly at age 31 to be learning about eye makeup, especially after about 6 years of dancing.. LOL. Lots of poeple tell me to experiment. Sounds like fun, but I would be very impatient with it. I'm generally a low-maintenance person, but love, LOVE that bold look. Also don't want to waste too much (expensive) makeup.

Well, makeup tends to last awhile so its OK. But you'lll use a lot less makeup with the primer, so definitely get that.

But basically there, its the black color around the bottom lid, th eback 3/4(almost likeliner, but it gets blended), and blue in the back 1/3 part, the flash on the other 2/3 of hte lower lid, and asphyxia right up top to blend it towards your brows ad whatever color you pick for under them(i don't know your skin tone).

Its really pretty simple, the trick is to get a nice brush, and BLEND. so its all smooth and technicolor.

I love it-if you were closer to portland, I'd just drag you over and test colors and techniques on you till we found some you liked.

But yeah, good luck with it! Glad that helped!

Heh. Be glad you don't. People around me end up spending WAY too much on makeup after I play with them. LOL When Yek went redhead we made a day of it, and just ask her, i was drawing out diagrams and numbering areas like a freakin paint by number so she could tell what i did!

Its mildly scary and obsessive. But practice makes perfect, and even starting wiht a basic technique that works on your face shape(that is my technique) and gradually shifting the colors for the occassion works well for experimenting while not getting too impatient.

I like that technique because it has a lot of depth, but because the color is low, it doesn't make me look weird, but with my crease, i can still show it off a bit.

I would buy Violet pigment and Mixing Medium. Dab your brush in a bit of Mixing Medium, then in the pigment and apply. Primers are great for staying power, but Mixing Medium really helps achieve a bright, bold look.

Aw, I'd really like that.. paint by number I can do basic eyeshadow, but I like the look of the more complicated "this goes here and blend this that way" applications.

Sounds like you need to create a teaching program online and sell it!!

I went to the Mac store and I asked for mixing medium and they looked at me like I was nutz,I couldnt believe it, there were three girls and none of them knew what I was talking about.

Maybe I have to buy off the website or try a different store.

It was so wierd and I really want some.

maybelline made their high intensity pigments/HIP line that's basically faux drugstore mac colors. obviously not quite as good quality, but way cheaper.

i think they have a couple colors of purple, one called amethyst, that you might find worth checking out. it's a little shimmery but not total glitter obliteration.

it's probably $3-4 dollars, and i've found with pressed eyeshadow trying it wet usually works, so just fuck around with it. if you don't like it, at least you didn't waste a ton of money.

I believe Mixing Medium is a Pro item, so you can get it at a Pro store or order over the phone. You can also grab some off ebay.

You have to be a professional to buy MAC Pro. They don't sell the Pro products @ the regular MAC store
