    Default Ye olde diaphragm

Upon digesting the news that the birth control pill may very well lead to a permanent decrease in sexual function (yeah, check it: http://www.epigee.org/guide/pill_sex.html), I have decided to go off the pill and am looking into non-hormonal options. Right now the diaphragm is looking pretty good, but I'm wondering why they're so uncommon these days. Like, it seems like there is some secret about why it sucks that I don't know about.

Has anyone used one? What was your experience?

Well, they are used with contraceptive jelly, and contraceptive jelly is guaranteed to give many women infections from hell.

Several girls I knew in college used diaphrams for a while but complained about the mess and lack of spontaneity. This may not even be a factor in your decision though, because I know things like this seem way more important when you are 18.

I think you have to reinsert the spermacide each time before sex and if you are having multiple sessions in one evening things get really messy (and the whole thing has to be left in for 6-8 hours afterward). Some women have trouble with fitting, but I don't think that is very common.

The only other thing I can think of is reliablility. This is one of the methods that is greatly effected by perfect use vs normal use. As long as you are careful failure rates are like 6 or 8%, but average use failures are more like 30%. (Check out these stats though, my memory may be faulty.)

I used a diaphragm for years. I was happy with it, and never once got pregnant. Not even a scare.

Does "perfect use" vs "normal use" have to do more with using it every single time and w/contraceptive jelly or with inserting it right? Like, is it hard to insert right? I worry about that. I definitely don't worry about using the thing.

And yeah, I am so not worried about spontanaity and mess at this point.

It seems like a lot of younger girls don't even know what a diaphram is LOL! I don't use tampons I use Instead which to me look a lot like a diaphram. I try to explain this to them and they look at me like I am speaking freaking chinese.

This is a stupid question but do you have to get fitted for a diaphram or are they onze size fits all?? I have always used the pill so I don't know much about them.

Sometimes being with girls instead of boys makes things much less complicated haha!

    I used one!

They really aren't too bad once you get the hang of them
It's sort of like a greased rubber frisbee with a spring in the rim.

There's a definite learning curve but they comic effect of having one sproing out of your hand and go flying across the room makes for some free entertainment.

Oh and I never had issues with yeast infections or anything like that while using it.

You do get fitted so to speak but it's a pretty simple process.

Your OB-GYN will fit you for your diaphragm, and write you a prescription that you fill at your pharmacy. You should get re-fitted every year or if you gain/ lose more than 20 pounds.

The reason why no one ever mentions diaphragms anymore is that it is a once a year purchase, so big pharma doesn't get a chance to make recurring $$ on repeated sales.

I took hormonal birth control for 7 years and got tired of all the problems that they caused (nausea, bloating, mood swings etc.). I asked my Dr. and she got me all set up with a diaphragm. I used that until I got my tubes tied. I had to go back in hormonal BC for three months prior to my surgery (to insure I wasn't pregnant).

I'm not sure why diaphragms aren't more popular. Once you get the hang of using it (it takes a couple of trial runs before you get the right positioning), it is very liberating form of birth control.

When it's in correctly you don't feel it at all.
My now ex husband said it didn't make a difference for him one way or the other.

Sironas description of a greasy rim is dead on. I use one now but also alternate with a todays sponge.

I had my pregnancies on birthcontrol but not the ones I'm on now. You can put a diaphram in for 12-24 hours. I do the same with the sponge. It's a small hassle.

Hmmm...you guys are making me want to get a diaphram. I feel like hormonal birthcontrol makes it challenging for me to loose weight....it doesn't really make me gain but it just sort of seems to make my body want to stay where it's at if that makes any sense

Have you considered a copper IUD? They're not hormonal and you can leave them in pretty much forever. I just learned about them in my biology class and they sound like the ideal birth control, especially for someone who doesn't want kids at all.

I ask this back in college when I worked in the student health office and was told that most of the trials are done around college campuses and therefore get lots of college kids. The people included in the study supposedly use the given method every time but are generally drunk college kids....so my guess would be a responsible adult would have a failure rate much closer to that of perfect use than that of average use.

I don't think it really has that much to do with insertion, more with actually using the jelly each time and leaving it in for the required time afterward. We really had to stress these points to all the girls who were considering a diaphram or cervical cap.

    i use this ancient product
when i picked it up for the first time from the pharmacy the boy there was like we havent had one of these in a LONNNG time

spontanaety (sp?) yes squashed BUT you can put it in up to 6 hours before and then use the little squirt thing to add more if you dont have sex in that time frame.. leave it in for 6 hours after sex

i get itchy when left in over night which is fine to do .. but fine as long as i take it out and clean it well and clean down there well... im fine

BAD thing when you have your period.. actually holds it all in so you dont even need a tampon!! but gets nasty so clean it really well if using it during your period

I was discouraged against using it because of the increased frequency of UTIs, both from the position of it while in use and from the jelly. I wondered if it could be used without the jelly as purely a barrier method, but was told the risk would be too high.

Your doctor or the nurse would teach you how to insert and give you a chance to do it yourself.
