Default using lotion dries your skin out?

you know how they say that using chapstick all the time will make your lips produce less natural moisture or hydration or whatever?

is the same true for lotion? i rarely used lotion EVER until my BA, and one of the meds i was on gave me super dry skin. so i started using it daily and now i feel like my skin is more dry than it ever has been. ive always had very soft skin and like i said, barely ever used lotion. i used it after i shaved my legs, maybe, and never on any other part of my body.

i'm using baby lotion, too, btw. nothing that *should* dry me out. but my skin feels not as soft and definately drier these days. nothing else has changed - i drink a ton of water and all that good stuff.

I've never heard that. Maybe it's the lotion you are using. Baby lotion might not be right for a grown woman's skin. I don't know. You might try Lubriderm or Curel. Those are the best moisturizing lotions that I've used. I also like anything in the Vaseline Intensive Care line.

I've never heard of this, either. I can't live without chapstick or lotion.

So this has been my big thing lately. I recently found out that glycerin, which is the base for almost every single lotion and hair conditioner on the market, may actually dry skin out. Glycerin is a humectant, which means it attracts water. That seems good, right? It's going to attract water out of the air and into your hair/skin. The problem is that you skin is comprised of a much greater percentage of water than the air (unless the humidity is super, super high) so by the principle of osmosis, the glycerin is going to pull water from deep within the skin to moisturize the outer layers.

The immediate effect is that you feel moisturized, but it's really drying you out, which will necessitate even moe of the product, which dries you out further...

I used to be a fanatic about lotion. Right out of the shower, again before bed, maybe when I wake up. I had to or I'd be all dry and itchy, which made me think I really needed all that lotion really bad. Since learning dis newz I have cut out all glycerin and moisturize face and body with pure unrefined coconut oil only. I am never, ever dry.

The more I learn about commercial products and their common ingredients, the more I feel like we are being ripped off like a prom dress at the Red Roof Inn.

oh my goodness thank you. i knew i couldnt be crazy in thinking that! im telling you, my skin was sooo soft and moisturized pretty well on its own without lotion until i started using it.

the coconut oil, though. what does that feel like? anything greasy/can you really "feel" it at all? i don't like when i feel like something is on my skin.

There are tons of crap ingredients in most lotions too. I rarely use it. My skin is fine without it. When I do, like during the winter, I try to use stuff with fewer ingredients or just straight vitamin E or jojoba oil, and aloe vera.

I've heard that licking your lips dries them out... never heard anything about chapstick though.

I might try the coconut oil idea though. Any idea on how long it should take before you notice a difference? Like is there an adjustment period?

I too have replaced all lotion with coconut oil, and have much softer, more supple skin as a result. I used to have really dry skin and I had to lotion up twice a day just so I wouldn't itch. Now I just massage in coconut oil every couple of days when I shave and bathe, and my skin stays soft and smooth.

I do it after shaving, still in the bath as the water runs out. I just take a bit on my hand and rub it into my whole body, making sure it gets massaged in. Then I wash and condition my hair in the shower and towel off. Excess oil gets rinsed off in the shower, leaving behind only what's soaked into the skin. I have to wash the tub a lot more (it gets oily and looks dirty faster) but oh well.

Hahahaha that is soooo my new siggy........

But on topic I NEVER w ould have belived that until recently...I have exczema on my legs so I always felt like I had to mosturize every day to keep it from flaring up...

I forgot my mosturizer when I went up North and didn't use any for ten days and actually my skin looks better than it has in a long time. Maybe it is a conspiracy?

I would have to disagree with DR.

Glycerin (glycerol) is a humectant with draws moisture from the air.. however it does not and is not able to pull moisture from skin.. (you can research this online). I do prefer vegetable glycerin over the synthetic kind though.

The reason as to why the baby lotion is drying out your skin is because it contains MINERAL OIL. Stay away from any product which contains mineral oil.

Moisture is water. If water isn't one of the first 3 ingredients listed, then stay away because all it it is doing is coating the skin and locking moisture OUT. This is another reason why chapstick dries out the lips. Chapstick like most commercial products and cosmetics includes mineral oil (Paraffinum Liquidum) and petrolium. This substances are not moisturizing as they do not contain any moisture, again they lock moisture out. Now if you apply petroleum or oil to wet skin it will lock the moisture IN (but still stay away from both of these ingredients, the are pore clogging)

Like the ladies above have stated already; coconut is amazing for the skin (and hair) esp if you apply it to wet skin; like after stepping out of the shower or bath. I love jojoba oil also.

I now make my own hair and skin moisturizers.

This is my understanding, too- so I avoid petroleum and mineral oils. I started using the Whole Foods body lotion and I really like it... It's $4 for a giant bottle of it. During the winter, I mix a vitimin E, olive, or castor oil with it. But this year I think I'm going to try mixing it with jojoba oil.

Forgot to add, I've heard the glycerin thing before , too but it never seemed to effect me much. Everybody's different so I wouldn't doubt that glycerin would make some people feel dryer with prolonged use...

I had no idea about this stuff. I just try to avoid cones in my shampoos and hair products. And I never use the "popular" chemical-laden cheap stuff. I use natural products and they usually smell better too. I think I should switch completely to coconut oil though. Would probably be cheaper and more pure.

water is the first ingredient in baby lotion, though.

I always moisturise after a shower or bath. If u exfoliate in the shower/bath and then moisturise you should notice that your skin will be nice and moist and smooth. I always get comments on how smooth my skin is and i've always exfoliated and moisturised.
I dont know much about ingredients but I do like the nivea firming lotion.

Petrolium draws moisture from the skin and is also a carcinogenic. Bad!

Mineral oils do you no good, and neither does (standard, synthetic) glycerin.

Vegetable glycerin is much better for you. If a product uses it, it'll specifically state vegetable glycerin.

Natural oils such as coconut, castor, sweet almont, olive oil, etc. are wonderful too!

First, you may have a very slight allergy to an ingredient in your lotions.
Otherwise, you might want to try to find something with hemp seed oil in it...but not the kind from the Body Shop unless you're only going to use it on your feet because it's uber-rich and can feel slightly greasy anywhere else.
You could also try purchasing a very high-quality indoor tanning lotion as they usually have ingredients that are made for people with skin that is more stressed and much drier...usually without feeling oily - especially if it's a CalTan product. I'm an avid tanner, and looove Cypher, CT7, the XLine, and Oasis. Their non-tanning lotions Luminous and Daily Rescu are not just made for tanning and smell amazing.

My bad, I was thinking of baby oil. Regardless, baby lotion is GARBAGE! It doesn't contain petroleum however it contains synthetic (bee) wax, which is essentially the same thing. This shit is marketed towards children but I would never apply it on my baby.

    check out the ingredients.

Water, Proplene Glycol, Myristyl Myristate, Glyceryl Monosterarate, Oleic Acid, Stearic Acid, Polysorbate, Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Palmitate, sorbitan Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Syntheic Beeswax, Stearyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol, carbomer, fragrance, methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, sodium hydroxide, red #33.

    Proplene Glycol - Synthetic humectant.

Benzyl Alcohol = DRYING. I should note that Stearyl and Cetyl Alcohol are not considered drying. They are fatty acids and are used as emulsifiers in products which contain moisture and oil (as water and oils don't mix). Although IMO Polysorbate 20 is a better alternative. It is a new, non-toxic emulsifier able to dissolve oils into water, without the use of alcohol.

Dimethicone - Non-water soluble silicone which basically just sits on the skin and gives you the false appearance of smoothness.

PARABENS (methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben) - Do a search on parabens. This is a highly toxic (and absorbable) chemical. It is horrifying that parabens are not FDA regulated and yet the FDA recognizes the health risks associated this carcinogenic, cancer, causing chemical... apparently they are still evaluating it. http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-para.html

Synthetic dye = say no mo'

Britt aren't you a lush feen? They have some lovely moisturizing lotions so does WF as mia pointed out. Otherwise try to look for moisturizers which contain natural humectants (veg gylcerine, honey, 100% pure aloe vera, etc) and natural oils.

Those are some of my staples

Coconut oil a unique oil... love it!. It is able to penetrate the hair and skin unlike most oils which are only able to seal in moisture.

Jojoba oil is also another love of mine because it is non-greasy, light and is virtually identical to human sebum oil. It is perfect for sealing in moisture. In fact this is what helps the jojoba desert plant survive those long summer droughts.

Avocado also has wonderful moisturizing properties. This is oil is used in a lot in luxury, high-end lotions

Sweet almond oil is an essential oil which is high in vitamins and fatty acids. It closely resembles baby sebum. This is what I use when I make my moisturizers for my son.

EVOO is another oil I like to use for sealing moisture.

i do like lush buut.. there are parabens in some lush products too. theres something "bad" in everything, i think, lol. but like i said i'm reeally picky about the way lotions feel on my skin. which is why i barely ever used it to begin with. and now that i started my skin is dried out, ha. i have both dream cream and sympathy for the skin but i use them very rarely.

i think i'm going to go back to nivea's firming lotion because i remember that one being good, for me at least.
