Personally, I think placenta is just one more throw-away body excretement. It's not much to be proud of, or of any more importance than poo. The important thing is the new baby!
Animals eat it to reduce the risk of predators finding them and their newborns. And, probably to make up for nutrients lost during nursing/pregnancy and weeks they couldn't properly hunt. Humans do strange things with it, but the tree is mild compared to the lotus birth.
