    Default getting a dog

So me and the boyfriend went to the SPCA today and I fell in love with a dog. A bullmastiff.. Oh my god he was so cute.
Hes 2 years old and was brought in cause his prior owners didnt want him anymore. Anyways I played with him for about an hour. He was very well behaved, already housetrained etc etc.
He wont be available for adoption for another 2 weeks however since he was just brought in a few days ago and they are running some tests on him, health checks etc.

Anyways, just curious if anyone ever had this type of dog.
My boyfriend has had dogs all his life but currently we dont have any. We dont have any other pets in the house either, or children. Actually its just the two of us and we have alot of space which is crucial since the dog will get to be around 150 pounds!

OMG!!! Our next dogs will either be mastif's or Great danes... LOVE them! A friend of mine has a mastiff and he's just a big, slobbery ball of cute... so mellow and well behaved.

What's cool about Danes and mastiff's is that they're basically overgrown lap dogs. They're so big so they're not good if you're looking for an active dog- something that has a ton of enery and that you can run and such. But if you're looking for a loyal, lazy compainion animal, they're great! Also, keep in mind thier life spans... you'll be lucky to get 10 years out of a giant breed.

I LOVE bullmastiffs and I was planning on getting one before I adopted my dog (pitbull) but they are a lot of work as is any dog that size!

    Remember:

    It weighs more than you
It's like having an extra person sleep in bed or sit on the couch size wize
If they aren't really well trained it's a real pain in the ass to deal with because of their size
That breed is a lap lover so they will curl up in your lap and smush you because they don't "get" how big they are
You can't stay out all night or all day long...you have to come home every eight or so hours
It's REALLY hard to find a pet sitter for such a big dog when you go out of town
People will be scared of your dog bc of its size/looks
If the dog has seperation anxiety that manifests itself in destructive behavior when you go out. My large dog had that and she destroyed SOOOO much stuff when I would go out. Eventually I solved this by spending 300 dollars on a huge crate...so make sure you look into crating too if you have any problems

Those are all things I experience with my big old pitbull too. But all in all she is so worth it I love her SOOO much. If you can deal with those things, go ahead and get it!!

Thanks for your input and advice everyone.
I have always wanted a mastiff and have thought about it and researched it alot.
I am not looking for a hyper, super active type of dog.
I plan to walk-exercise the dog so he doesnt get overweight but im not expecting the dog to be much of a "fetch-er".

My friend once had a mastiff. Most passive dog I ever met but huge and when you are out in public NOONE will believe the dog is gentle. You will always be dealing with negativity in the parks etc. Also better make friends with dog poop you will be seeing and handling lots of it! Good luck whatever you decide. I have a shitzu she is a doll. No boyfriend input!

Cool!!! So great that you're adopting from a shelter. One thing about bullmastiffs-they sometimes turn when they get older. It's sad, I know, but in the unlikely even that it does happen, just be aware you will have to put it down. I don't think thats a good enough reason not to adopt though- this dog needs a home just as much as any other dog and it sounds like the right situation for both of you. Good luck!!!

Well, it wouldn't be all of the sudden. They can get really grumpy when they get old. First they don't like other people and eventually their family. At a certain point it might just be too risky to have a 150 bear that might bite. At that point, the right thing to do is put it down. But don't let that dissuade you! Masties are worth it. You will have plenty of good years.

^^^ You like to argue with everything. I'm not going to try to find stats. Its just something I've heard and seen myself, and I'm warning her so that she knows what to do if it ever happens. It probably won't.

    .

Altho it's grounded in truth but it is not breed specific. sometimes ANY kind of dog can get dementia and then get weird about their owners... I had a collie right before I graduated from highschool, Ballot. She was the bomb. Anyway she got doggie alzheimers and when we would come home she would freak out for about five minutes and back us into a corner growling...then all of a sudden she like remembered who we were and would jump up and hug and lick and kiss us. It was really sad she would be fine all day but when we left for a long time (like eight hours) it would take her a long time to remember us.

But that can happen to any breed I think.

Bull Mastiffs are gentle giants. They are sweet loyal family dogs. Their temperament is very good for houses with children, or other animals. The only down side is that they don't always know their own strength and size. They also drool, a lot. So if you don't mind gobs of doggy saliva, or the occasional overturned piece of furniture, then go for it!
