That is medically unsound advice. You can skip 1 MONTH of heartworm preventative. That is IT. Period. If you have missed two periods of it, it is possible your dog has contracted heartworm. If it has, and you give the preventative, you are risking your dogs life. Heartguard is only 100 percent effective when used every month, or every other month at a minumum (although there is small room for error there).
What happens is heartworm preventative kills any of "baby" heartworms...but if they develop (which is what happens in the time frame you are speaking about) they become large. The heartguard kills them, but they are too large to be flushed through the system, "catch" in the veins/arteries and causes a stop of blood flow. It is horrible, and in my vet tech days I saw it happen just once (luckily). You really should have your dog tested before tossing it that tasty treat.
