Default black to brown hair at home no prob right?

well my hairdresser had screwed my hair color up, and yeah i could have her fix it but id rather do it myself. my roots she got brown but instead of bleach she used a lightening cream on my black, which did nothing at all.

can i get some 40 volume from sallys and get it light enough to put dark brown over without it looking orangey? i figure it is dark enough so i should have no issues.

^^^ Honestly, you're entering the land of color correction... I HIGHLY reccomend seeing an expierienced colorist.

If you insist on DIY, you're going to have to be super careful... keep the decolorizer off the regrowth or else you'll get a chemical burn and turn your roots much lighter than the rest of your hair.

Keep in mind that your hair will not lift evenly, especially if the black you've used in the past is a permanent color- so there's a chance your end result will not be even either. If the ends are pourous, they may take on a darker, ashier hue then the rest of your hair, so you may want to use a lower volume developer on your ends.

Lift your hair to an orange-red and use a demi permanent with added blue and green pigments. I'd get color that I could mix myself so that you can add a blue and green kicker/enhancer if nessacary. DO NOT use permanent color over decolorized hair.

was your black from store bought color? That stuff doesn't go without a fight! I had two friends come in to lighten their hair at the salon I worked at and both were there all day. Seriously. The end result turned out very pretty and their hair wasn't damaged. I highly recommend going to a color correction specialist vs a at home attempt!

black is one of the(if not THE) hardest color to get rid off... I suggest going to a professional. I tried to dye my hair dark red after dying it black and it did not come out even. So now Im back to pitch black hair.

I had black hair before that I had dyed myself.

When I got sick of it, I went to Wal-Mart and got a box of "color-Oops".

It absolutely reeks, but it lifted my hair to a light reddish brown. My hair was really long, so I had to go back for a second box, but it worked really well, and my hair wasn't damaged at all. I put a brown dye on top, then conditioned the heck out of it, and it was as silky as ever.

Yeah, I wouldn't fuck around with this yourself.

Black dye is a bitch to get out, especially if there are a few layers on there. Easy to end up with a buzz cut if you're not careful.

You are stepping into hair color correction which can even be tricky for some stylists. I would very highly recommend seeking an experienced or master haircolorist first. Even going back to the person who made the mistake and asking for a correction would be a better idea than doing anything at home.

If you must though I recommend starting off with a lower volume developer. Try a 20 first. Mix enlightening powder with two parts developer and one part shampoo. If that doesn't work go up to 30 volume. You gradually want to work yourself up to avoid scalp irritation and frying your hair. You also have to be patient. The lower volume developer will take longer but allow it go through the stages it will go through. It's going to turn red first, then red/orange then orange. Once you hit red/orange you can put a dark brown on it. Because your hair is going to be porous after bleaching it it's going to grab that color. I'd recommend purchasing a level 6 blue/green demi or 6 natural to go over the top of it. Don't buy Clairol or Loreal, find Wella if you can. Also you want to mix the color with it's proper developer. Make sure you cover your head completely or have someone to help you to ensure through coverage. Leave the color on the recommended processing time or you might not pick up all the pigments needed.

Oh and if you can apply the color to the mid-shalf (two inches from the scalp and 3 inches from the bottom first), then new growth/roots second then emulsify through the ends the last 5 minutes.

Just bleach the half that is black then. Put the color on the lightest area first then the darker area last.

get a yellow box from sallys called color-fix.
it will lift all the black with no damage.
then hit with the color you want.

I messed up my hair pretty bad when I was about 15 trying to take it from black to an auburn type color...eeek. My hair was a couple inches past my bra strap and I ened up having to cut it into a pixie haircut because it was so damaged. It grew back though...that is the awesome thing about hair.

However you are much smarter than my dumbass 15 year old self so I am sure you will be fine . Let us know how it turns out!!

It's a color stripper. I have used it before, to take my hair from dark ash brown to light brown. I wouldn't say there was no damage, but certainly less than bleach. If you use it, I would get more than one box though

Color strippers work the same way as bleach...

    Just go to a pro.
