eh, for starters, there's no 'maybe' about black people spending more to deter racist slights-- they have to look more expensive to not be mistaken for maids/janitors/other low-status workers. that's a big part of conspicous consumption among black people. it's a sign of how high-status whites are that they can do things like wear jeans every day, while blacks are risking promotion to even wear them on casual friday (in say a fortune 500 environment).
in the town i live in, it is a sign of white status to dress very poorly in expensive restaurants, down to torn clothes and baggy shorts. needless to say, black patrons dressed in such manner aren't allowed in.
this entire article actually ends up admitting this in an oblique way, by noting that where black people have higher status (due to having higher average incomes), there is simply less need to dress as far away from maidwear as possible.
