I have a "three-fourths crown" (it replaced a large filling- my dentist was wonderful enough to save my molar this way.) They are very expensive but worth it.
PM me with questions, as I don't want to bore people with my dental saga (several thousand dollars and counting.)
IMO get 2nd and 3rd opinions. I *HAVE* been given incorrect info by dentists and saved money by not believing what they said initially. "Consider the source."
I had to get a crown where i had a root canal in my molar. They grind it down to the nub and put a fake tooth on top. Pretty easy.
All my front teeth are crowns. They aren't bad, but the gum area will be sore for a while. They do these impressions after they have filed the real tooth down to a point and give you a temporary crown while they make the permanent one. To do the impressions they put this string under the edge of your gums to hold them away from the base of the tooth. That part is pretty painful, and will leave you a little sore, but the rest is nothing.
I got one last Friday. It was easy, didnt hurt. Gum was sore for a couple days when I brushed.
I will say this... this reason I need 30k worth of dental work is because I had a root canal and didnt get them crowned. Over time (2-3 years) the tooth became weak and literally broke into pieces. Because of that it had to be pulled.... and this happened with 4 teeth... I now need implants+crowns+bone grafts which = $5,000 a piece.
Get the crown.
You have to have a crown if you get a root canal. I don't think that's negotiable.
I'm about to have my first root canal, but that tooth is already crowned, LOL! So it saves me a little money. My crown was a nightmare, the dentist did it with no anaesthetic and he did a shit job because it's hurt off and on and given me all kinds of problems for seven or eight years. I'm really looking forward to the root canal so it won't hurt anymore. They're just going to drill down through the crown and then put a filling on it so they don't have to redo the whole crown.

Crowns are no biggie.. I have a bunch. No hurtie when it's put in. Just some pressure.
Just be careful with what you chew and for petes sake don't use your teeth to open stuff. Because if it's a porcelain one it could chip and that's a pain to replace. I chipped my front one a week after I got it.
Muahs!
xoxoxox
Actually all of my teeth but one have root canals, but I have only 4 crowns. You don't have to get a crown if the reason for the root canal isn't an insane cavity. Don't let the dentist lie to you. You may in the distant future have to have a crown if you don't take care of your teeth and develop a large surface cavity, but that can happen with or without a root canal.
The very front ones which had heavy damage from my bulimia were the only ones to get crowns.
BTW - I take good care of my teeth, most were knocked loose, severing the nerve, and causing an abscess years later.
Also, the impressions part, might not be bad if you are numbed. I wasn't, so I thought the string part was pretty painful.
Interesting. I've had multiple dentists tell me that a crown is necessary after a root canal... but then, most dentists are like most mechanics, they are not above padding their bills. Scummy bastards.
Anyway, my crown hurt like a motherfucker. The anaesthetic had worn off before he started, and he refused to give me more, so the whole thing was done with no painkiller. I don't know what exactly was involved, but there was a lot of drilling and bits of blood and pulp splattered on my glasses. I tore a rip in the arm of the chair with my fingernail, digging in because it hurt so badly. I never want to go through that again. But a better dentist can surely do a better job.

Did you have the root canal first? Because that really should be done, if not the tooth sensitivity will be terrible. It also removes the nerve completely so the gum trauma should be the only thing you feel. With a live nerve, drilling through the pulp would be excruciating.
I dunno though, I've never even had anaesthetic with any of my root canals, so I guess it may be tolerable. Seems cruel though.
Oh my gosh thats horrible! I had local anaesthetic and my crown was easy peasy. Im sorry, if Im in pain I will make them stop and give more anaesthetic before they continue.
Definately do not go back to that dentist.
I have crappy insurance but it covers up to $2,000 so my crown was only $272 on my side. Its also a plan where the dentist cannot charge me for the difference of what they pay him and what his fee is.
In my case a crown is $989. My insurance pays $485 and I pay $272 = $757. Thats all he gets, he cannot charge me the difference. My insurance is United Concordia. I like them.
Nope, my crown was in 2001 and I did not have a root canal beforehand. I'm hoping to get the root canal done in that tooth this week. What a relief that will be! This tooth has been making me miserable for years and this year it ruined my birthday. I was actually fantasizing about the ice skate procedure in Castaway and would've done it if I had a rock and an ice skate! I'm damn sick of the pain from this tooth.
And whatever you do - stay the heck away from Western Dental!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^^^ Word! Western Dental gave me a filling in a fucking wisdom tooth. I didn't find out until a couple years later when I had the wisdom tooth pulled and saw the filling in it. They dropped the ball on me a few times but that was just fucking stupid. They told me the cavity was in a molar. I wouldn't have filled it if I'd known it was in a damn wisdom tooth that would eventually have to come out anyway!

This happened to me when I was fitted for my replacement retainer a few months ago. I made sure not to eat anything before I went for the appointment. The dental tech was nice about it too, it's a common thing.
PLEASE follow all the doctor's orders after the procedure....The crowns will be too pricey to mess up. No crunchy food, no messing with the teeth.
That's what I was gonna say. I've had two root canals and I can't imagine not having a crown. I was never given an option, nor would I want it without a crown. It's just a little nub of a tooth, even if it's in back.....b/c it's only a nub, it can be easily fractured, you can hurt your gum easily, etc.
Oh yeah ....and the gooey stuff to make the tooth impression ....nasty. It makes me want to throw up. But it's only a little bit right around that tooth....they put a tray type thing in your mouth. Just don't put your head back very far and you should be fine. That was my mistake the first time and the gooey stuff started to trickle towards the back of my mouth before it hardened. So keep your head kinda up, and you should be fine. :-)
