Default Scoliosis- who has it/how does it affect you?

Another thread started turning into a scoliosis thread so I decided to start one!

I have scoliosis, have since I was a child. It is 32 degrees and in my lower lumbar... basically curves my back slightly to the right at the bottom and left at the top. Never had anyone notice it, but if I bend over it can be seen and felt. Had a back brace that I never wore when I was little (mistake!) and used to go to the chiropractor 3x a week. Now, I get bi weekly massages and stretch for pain management.

Curious how many other dancers have scoliosis/how it affects your day to day life/what you plan on doing about it?

mines twenty degrees or less-- don't remember the exact thing. and I have a flat neck where there's supposed to be a curve. I go to a chiropractor and that's the best thing for me. I've done yoga and I like that but I can fit the chiropractor into my schedule better and I feel I get more out of it immediately and in the long term.

Hmmm....I dont have scoliosis, but I have lordosis. Dancing is REALLY bad for it.

*Lordosis is like, where your pelvis naturally curves backwards and your butt sticks out. You know, like how your back is in stripper shoes....mine is like that all the time*

pilates really helps me keep it in check and I'm not dancing full time now, but when I was it REALLY messed up my body. The only time I didnt have an issue (well a major issue) was when I was in college (I got my BFA in dance) so I was dancing 5 hours a day plus an hour of pilates a day, yoga, etc. AHH. God I miss college I felt great physically.

I really need to start doing more ballet classes and more pilates to fix my back. (Pilates correctly alligns your spine and builds your tummy and back muscles to hold it in place, correcting the natural mis-alignment of your back)

The thing about lordosis that blows is like, okay imagine standing up strait and then pulling your arms all the way as far as they will go backwars, or trying to touch your elbows together in back. Thats what my back wants to do naturally, and it also kind of makes your tummy stick out....GRRR!!! So I feel like from the front I look fatter than I am.

Mine was 6 degrees, I think. Mild. I wasn't allowed to carry my school books home or in the hall in middle school-I had to keep a seperate collection at home and in the separate classes. I'm not sure it helped!

I do yoga when I can and pilates. You can see how part of my back just scooches a bit over in the middle when I bend over, but I think the exercise helps a lot.

ETA: ^^Is that like a sway back? I do have that as well.

I found out I had scoliosis when I was 16 ( I know that is later than the norm). I would have the most awful lower back pain. I do alot of physical activities and yoga. I still get really bad lower back pain everyonce in a while, but no where near the same intensity that I had when I was sixteen. The only real problem I have now is my ballet teacher telling me I have major sway back. I have to adjust my body in a strange way to dance correctly.

I have scoliosis (15 degrees) and mild kyphosis. When diagnosed at age 14 I was told that it was very minor and would not even be noticed, let alone cause me any problems. The doctor recommended against a back brace. I fucking hate him.

I have chronic pain at the point where my spine curves (it also twists there) as well as in my lower back. Dancing only exaggerates and exacerbates the swayback posture. I've gone to chiros, physical therapists, massage therapists, an osteopath. I've never had any relief. The only thing that ever helped was drugs and even they have quit working. My husband HATES giving massages (it legitimately does hurt his hands. He's a very sensitve creature. Haha!) but he massages me almost every night because the pain is so bad.

I've had doctors tell me that the curvature isn't bad at all and I shouldn't be having pain. They tell me that scoliosis is not generally a painful condition. Ok, well then isn't it concerning that I AM? It's not like I'm making this up. The muscles all around the curve/twist site are tense and aching trying to compensate. When it's really bad the tension spreads through my neck, shoulder, and even head giving me a tension headache. I also have TMJ, so between that and the spinal crap, they've got my upper body on lockdown.

I was told my back shouldn't hurt, too, and it was slightly swollen all the time for a while. I get the head tension too.

If you haven't tried Pilates, I can't recommend it enough. I've gone from being in pain a lot a year ago to almost no back pain anymore. And I don't even do it that much. Maybe contact Farrah_holiday about that sort of yoga she was doing as well. I'm convinced (now) that spines want to go right, they just need help.

Also-get your hubby one of those hand exercisers!

I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 18...I never had a problem with it before until I was working at the mall and after about 4 hrs, my back would be killing me. It hurt so bad that it traveled down to my legs and feet and I had to go to the emergency because I could barely stand anymore. They took an x-ray and showed it to me...yup...I have a slight curve in my spine.

Its hard for me to stand and sit up for long periods...it doesn't really affect my dancing that much...it really depends on how much I'm doing though. I'll wear a back brace occasionally if it gets too painful. I also have muscle relaxants and I take them only if I need to.

Yes its a pain in the ass but it could be much worse for me, so I really don't complain about it.

Scoliosis runs in my family. My sister had it EXTREME-it wasn't "noticable" but it kept getting worse, and she eventually had surgery, put a rod in along her spine to help support it.

I have a minor curvature in mine, but its the sort of "contortionist back" that vegasprincess was talking about. And its not bothersome, though its nearly impossible for me to have proper alignment.

I need to stick with doing pilates then! I have a severe lordosis in my lower back (swayback) and it fucking sucks balls. When I put my stripper shoes on I feel like a complete freak. Big belly jutting out and butt sticking out too. Lots of guys like it for some reason. I HURT.

Pilates is a huge help for scoliosis. I knew an older woman (in her late 50s/early 60s) who had pretty bad scoliosis. Her spine curved to the side and you could easily see it and it was progressively curving more. Since she started pilates the curving had stopped.

I don't know if I have scoliosis, but my dad does. Is it genetic?

Mine's pretty bad though I'm not sure what exact degree. I've seen it on x-ray.

It bothers me most when I'm riding horses a lot. Which is kind of worrisome since I want to be a horse trainer Maybe I'll eventually have to switch to gaited horses or minis or something.

I have scoliosis. Im not sure what degree, I dont remember being told. I just had an x-ray taken of my spine and was told by a chiropractor that i had it.

I suffered years of back and neck pain that basically made life slightly less enjoyable. I used to feel the need to constantly twist and stretch to ease the pain.

Then I started getting monthly spinal adjustments at the chiropractors and it was the best thing for it. Now the only time I notice pain is if I miss an adjustment.

Wow, it seems to be common ailment. I have it too, and dancing made it worse. I plan on going to PT again cuz my back has been killing me. All i wanna do is lay down.

One thing that drives me nuts is when i sit in a hard back chair, I can feel one of my vertabrae grinding into the back of the chair. Its so hard to adjust the way i sit.

I read on a scoliosis fact site that Kurt Cobain had it (it is often linked to depression)...i dunno usless trivia.
I'm getting my Dial-A-Stripper service up and running again. If you are in NYC or NJ and are interested in private party dancing, email [email protected] with your SW handle, contact info, photo (if you have one) & best time to call and I'll get back to you asap.

If you're having a party and need strippers, email me with the details and any questions you have. Thanks!

I have a friend who does, "Yoga for Scoliosis". It's done by a woman who has scoliosis and my friend said that it's helped her immensely with her scoliosis.

I wonder how our lovely shoes contribute to the condition... I know my back hurts more when I work extra shifts in a week. Interesting to see how many of us have it!!!

My best friend growing up had the same degree as mine, in the same place. I ran into her about three years ago, and she had a scar from the top of her spine down to the bottom (literally, whole thing). Her dad was a big surgeon, and I'm guessing he pushed her to do it. She said it never stopped hurting.... Poor thing!

Surgery scares the crap outta me!!

Wow. No idea how I missed this thread. I have SEVERE scoliosis. My top curve is 71 degrees, the bottom curve, in the 60's.

Yep, it's BAD. Surgery is my only option for relieving the pain (long-term). I am scheduled for surgery this Fall. Until then, Norco (Vicodin) is my best friend. Without out, I would not being able to dance at this point. Even sitting hurts me. It's horrible. I should post my X-rays.

Yes, dancing is miserable after the first two hours. That is the main reason I only work 4 hour shifts...and take my shoes off whenever (and wherever) possible. The pain is . The pain meds help a lot, but still - your body builds a tolerance to those, and they don't work as well. The good news is I am at least hurting a bit less than I was right in the beginning. I assume my muscles are getting adjusted the best they can...

Dottie: If you really want to see, I can upload the pic to photobucket and link you.
