    Default The Nod.

I'm noticing it from other bikes on the road. I'm riding down, they're opposite and I get the nod.

It's a sign of respect, camaraderie, friendship and a basic, "I don't know you but I have your back"

Same when I'm working Indy. I see a girl in skimpy clothes and heels being followed by a large man wearing black and holding a giant pink suitcase - I know. She nods, I nod.

Corvette owners get nods from other corvette owners.

It also says, "I know what you do.. and I do it too. We're together on this."

When do you get 'the nod'?

Lysondra, bikers in the UK have all sots of signals for eachother. Waving your finger around means `cops head/speed trap, slow down`. Pushing a flat palm up and down means `slow down too` usualy bc of a crash or something head.

    Bikers here give a wave.

Funny story, my friend said someone in her office, really conservative asked her this:
"I see bikers all the time signaling each other as they pass, is this some kind of secret gang symbol? What does it mean?"

    "Um, hi."

The standard bike-to-bike wave, at least out here, is hand out down low. And I wave at 'em all, whether they wave back or not.

I remember one nod in particular, a guy on a sport bike stopped at a light at the cross street. I got the yellow as I approached, gunned it, and did the perfect swoop through the turn, down way low, sliding off the bike a bit, helmet up and down. He was looking to his left at me. Respectful nod (think Boba Fett in Return of the Jedi) as I swept by him, "Nice turn, mate," type of thing. One of life's little vignettes.

In Florida, Orlando area, My dad would do a thumbs up to other Honda Gold Wing Bikers and they would do it too, along with other bikers.

When I was a little girl I used to love to go on rides with him because then I could do the thumbs up thing too

It happens a lot with unusual cars too. Pretty much any kind of vehicle where you see people forming riding clubs, or clubs to discuss care and modding their vehicles tends to tie-in with the nod mentality. I've driven unusual cars most of my life and the nod has been going on for as long as I can recall.

I get nods when guys are in really hot cars. It's like they really want me to check out their ride.

Lys, great idea for a thread. Good examples, too.

My first thought is, "Is a nod with that specific meaning culturally universal?" I don't ever remember seeing it used that way in Europe or Asia; certainly not Russia, France or Germany.

It's more commonly used in Anglophone countries, but I would swear that in the U.K. "the nod" means something different. I think it's a social class thing, but I'm more a linguist than a sociologist, so I really don't know.

Australia is a commonwealth nation in terms of linguistic heritage, but culturally it's still the bad boy of the commonwealth. Sort of like, "We didn't fight a revolution like the Americans did, but we'll still kick your arse." I can see where "the nod" would be very big there.

Anyway, here are the people I get "the nod" from in the U.S. (used not as a greeting, but as a "I recognize that you and I share this"):

-Other on-air talent right before we go live (TV) - usually the anchors. The same if I'm standing on the set while they are recording promos or ID spots. You can pretty much differentiate talent from crew from about a million miles away on TV. Both have their own distinct swagger, lol.

-The guys bearing automatic weapons around secure U.S. facilities (if they know you, of course). It's definitely not a "go ahead" nod -- you still must present credentials every single time.

-In times of crisis, every person inside those facilities. During 9-11 and the weeks following, it was an "our ass could be toast any second" nod.

-Here's the interesting one: Other regulars in my home club who tend to take very good care of the dancers and the waitstaff. This is the most intriguing one because it's distinctly NOT all the regs. I think it's a "we've got everybody's back" nod, as Lys described.

That was one little particular duty I enjoyed way back when. I was the only time you could really, openly, screw with the officers and get away with it.

Yup... fellow sportbikes= two fingers from clutch hand pointing down (or a fist on helmet to signify the presence of LE), unless the clutch is engaged- then the nod happens.
It's an unwritten rule that sportbikes/cruisers don't wave to each other. I always try anyway... usually to no avail. My ex used to do this too- and turn it into a 'flipping the bird' upon rejection.

I think it's more mellow here, Collette. I wave at, and get waved back from, all kinds of bikes all the time. But I do have a bit of a crossover type of bike. Admittedly, the ones who ignore me most are scooters and Harley cruisers.

Heh, my ex had a corvette and would brag and go on about "the nod". The only time I get it, is when I'm on an early morning walk or jog. Like, "Hello, fellow early-riser".

I have a BMW M3 convertible so I always get the nod from fellow bimmers. We all tend to form packs on the road too.. I worked Monday and by the time I got there after an hour long drive it was me and 2 other new 5 series all riding together.

When I have the top down I get nods from other convertibles, especially ones with their tops down too.

seems like those exercising who get/give the nod, do so, because trying to have a conversation while panting just doesn't work......
