Default Never liking/being able to digest meat

I've seen a few posts lately about girls who just never, from childhood, liked or could handle meat. I am the same way. I grew up in a very meat based family. My dad hunted and for our other meat we slaughtered cattle that we raised.

I have always hated meat and as a child went to great lengths to avoid eating it. As a toddler, I spit it out or spit it up. I vividly remember throwing up all over my dinner plate after my mom made me eat chicken. I would slowly and carefully hide the meat served to me at dinner in my napkin or discreetly throw it on the floor for the dogs and cats.

At 17, after years of hiding that I'd been throwing away my meat, I told my parents I would never eat it again. My mom was cool with it, and my dad does whatever she says.

I tried to eat a few pieces of chicken a few days ago and threw up from it.

I eventually learned about the cruelty of meat eating and incorporated that into my non meat eating philosophy, but the main reason still is that I hate meat.

Although a few years ago I started *very* occasionally eating fish because I was getting sick, I have been pretty disgusted by meat my whole life.
    Anyone else just dislike meat?

I havent ever liked meat...so thankfully it wasnt a big deal when I was diagnosed with pancreatitis and had to give it up. Once in awhile I have chicken or something and I remember why I didnt like it to begin with..so I'm glad I didnt have to give up something I liked!

Interesting CKXXX! I've had a few people tell me that it is probably my body telling me that meat isn't good for me for whatever reason.

I used to throw up also when I ate meat..I remember when they put sausage on my pizza accidentally, but it was under the cheese so didn't know and ate a bite and got sick from it....I always thought I couldn't digest it or was unale to eat it...but now I think it was more mental than physical, althogh I can't explain why I was born without the tastebuds for it because my entire family is meat eaters ...

Sounds like it could well be an allergy -- I know someone who's allergic to shellfish who found out because she vomited after eating them as a kid.

HATE IT! Ugh! It's dead, rotting, decomposing flesh.... and that's exactly what it tastes like. Even as a child I could barely tolerate it. Veggies and fruits taste soooo much better. Why the hell would anyone eat meat when they could have a yummy salad or a mango?

People who eat meat confuse the hell out of me. I mean, really, it's not really that different than eating pedicure shavings, imo.

ETA - I forgot to mention, sometimes it used to make me throw up too. Always made me feel like crap. Chicken isn't as bad as beef, and the more processed it was the worse I felt. After about 20 yrs I finally couldn't take it anymore and just told my family I couldn't eat the junk anymore.

As a tolerant omnivore, I must agree with some of the previous posts: You should totally listen to your body....if your puking you probally shouldnt eat it, not all food is for everybody.

If I sounded intolerant I didn't mean to. I don't have a problem with people who eat meat, hell, I don't even label myself as a vegetarian. I just don't understand why people eat meat. I prepare it for my husband and kids daily.

I told K the other day that I was starting to think of myself as a "positive vegetarian" - not in the sense that I don't eat meat, because occasionally I do, but because I just like vegetarian food better. Whenever I eat meat I'm disappointed in it. I like the occasional high-quality beef or steamed fish, but given the choice I'd much rather have lentils and artichoke hearts!

And yeah, if I eat too much meat I get sick too. Even chicken makes me tired and sluggish, and beef just sits so heavily in my stomach. Veggies definitely make me feel more energized.

I read in Newsweek (this weeks edition) that breastfeeding helps babies learn to like the flavors of foods the mother eats because the flavor molecules are transfered via breast milk. Babies that are primarily fed formula will be much fussier eaters than breast fed babies.

That could be why kids like mom's home cooking best. Ultimately, being vegetarian is better for health and for the planet. I don't eat meat every day, but often enough to be unable to claim vegetarian status.

I've been vegetarian for my entire life -- was raised that way, from the womb up. :-) I don't really have the capacity to digest much meat. But I'm adventurous all the same and I try meat on the light end these days. Fish seems to go down OK, and occasionally a little bit of chicken too, but soup with a beef broth base usually gives me a stomachache.

It doesn't make me projectile vomit though, which is why I suggested that the OP likely has an allergy!

It's good that there are so many resources for vegetarians these days, no matter why you end up not eating meat. When I was a kid, I got bullied for it a lot and people lectured me (and my mother!) about nutrition using all sorts of crappy bad science. These days that doesn't seem to happen anymore.

I was a strict veg for years. Now I eat poultry and fish. I've tried beef twice over the past year and HATED it. I'm not crazy about eggs (irritate my gut) and I haven't had milk/dairy since I was a child.

I never liked beef as a kid either. I've always enjoyed poultry and fish though! Yum! But I've also been really fussy. Only good quality food passes these lips.

There's no need to be so dramatic about it. People eat meat for the same reason they eat anything else. They like it. If someone served you rotten meat that tasted like pedicure shavings, then no wonder you didn't like it.

I don't have any issue at all with people who choose to be vegetarian or vegan, unless they treat me like a pariah for eating meat. To each her own.

i was raised in a really, really meat eating family. when i was a kid, meat was my favorite food. bacon, steak, fried chicken, etc. everything but fish and seafood basically.

i wish i had never liked meat. i've been vegan for four years now, but i still miss that awful stuff.

I wish I didn't like beef and shrimp. Chicken, turkey, all other meat is just meh... but oh, I LOVE beef. I wish it didn't make me feel the way it does or come with the health risks that it does.

^^^ just eat the grass-fed beef and you're good, Yek. Well, unless it makes you feel bad when you eat it.

That's what I do, I eat organic beef once every couple of weeks. If I don't eat it too often I'm fine with it... I just can't handle it every day. It does make me tired and sluggish but that's okay on some days, LOL!

I've never liked or been able to digest meat. It makes sense that meat wouldn't make you have energy because it's dead..

^^^ Well, so are vegetables by the time you eat them. Unless you're grazing like a cow and swallowing the grass whole, roots and all. But even that would kill it by the time you digested it.

true... but freshly harvested raw veggies are more alive than a cow that was killed a week ago, and has already started to decay, yes?

Yeah, if you can get freshly harvested raw veggies. Most people go to the supermarket and buy produce that was picked two or three weeks ago, maybe more. They can't all live in Portland or Boulder!

Different foods affect different people differently. Overcooked food won't provide the maximal amount of energy for digestion and appropriation.

A slow-oxidizer will feel more energetic with a carb dominant diet. A fast-oxidator will feel more energetic with a protein-based diet.
