    Default Your previous stripping misconceptions?

I apologize if there is already a thread about this but I'm curious what misconceptions you had prior to stripping? I'll share a few:

-A nude club means you work nude the entire time, even when hustling!

-A table dance was literally dancing on their table!

-Stripping is glamourous (not for me, at least, it's hard HARD work!)

-Men are interested in your body only and personality, intelligence, ect. means nothing.

Totally agree with those two...I thought that a table dance was really on the table when I was younger...

that you actually had to know how to dance

that you had to be really hot

that those ads in the newspaper claiming "up to $1000 a night!" were greatly exaggerated.

I second these two: a table dance was on a table, and that you had to know how to dance.

These 2 were the best discoveries I made about stripping, hands down. When I was new I was absolutely fixated by the stringy-haired girls shuffling into the DR and emerging onto the floor all made up and sexified. And I'm always enamored of that one chick-- there's one in every club-- who can't dance to save her life, and knows no pole tricks, but hustles like a motherfucker and has a zillion regulars.

I did not know that it was a sales job.
I did not know that being smart, intuitive, and a good "people reader" were actually the most valuable assets you have as a stripper. I had assumed it was tits.
Drought was over. Where was I? Drinks were on the house.
For mixers, my love, you'd poured--what?--even the rain.

    Yup!

I had no idea it was a sales job either.

I thought you had to be drop-dead-gorgeous.

Table dance = dance on table.

How is it that we all thought a table dance meant we danced on a table? funny.

*I agree with the drop dead gorgeous comment. I was shocked at how average the girls were on my first SC visit.

*I thought that girls actually went through a "training" program. Must be those "no experience necessary, training provided" comments in the help wanted ads.

*I thought that every stage show had to be like a feature's stage show.

*The costume lady provided the dancers free costumes, like as in loaned them out for the shift.

My boyfriend refuses to accept the fact that this is not true no matter what I tell him.

Sooooooo many custies are genuinely shocked when I tell them that we actually have to provide our own shoes and outfits.

I thought we had to dance on tables too!
I also thought you had to be trained to dance.
That a customer would never even THINK about touching a dancer.
Dancers never, ever drink at work.
    All strippers are ritch.
Money was made just by going on stage...

OMG! I have had so many people ask me about this. Some customers seriously seem to think there is a dress rack in the back that we all choose our outfits from, or that they're provided by the club like McDonald's provides shirts and name tags. If I'm wearing something nice, they'll say "I bet you had to fight to be the one to wear that!"

as for misconceptions... i don't think i really had any. i grew up in the country and was totally oblivious to strippers and that whole world before i stepped into a club for the first time and walked out with a job. so i didn't really go into stripping with any preconceptions at all, i just went in totally blind.

I always thought strip clubs would be NICER than most of them are. Maybe it's because growing up, my family would always pass this one strip club on the way to a movie, the mall, dinner, etc. It was a square building with bushes covering where the windows used to be. My parents told me it was an expensive Italian restaurant, which is why we could never go there. I wanted to go there so badly! I later ended up working there

My worst misconception was that we actually had to talk to the customers as in have actual conversations. I was so naive!

I was also one of those girls who thought table dancing meant dancing on a table I was so happy when I found out it wasn’t the case. I was afraid I'd fall off it and once years later I had a customer who requested it and what do you know, I did fall off the damn thing. LMFAO
