Default are kids still angry? if so, how?

Okay, I'm up and surfing wikipedia. Right now I've been reading articles about random 90s rock like Rage Against the Machine, about Woodstock 99, Lollapalooza, etc. I am wondering -- are kids still angry these days? Like, rioting at rock concerts and protesting WTO Conferences? Has similar stuff been happening in the US lately? Or has myspace and emo music changed stuff? I'm not talking about straight up juvenile delinquency like robbery etc, I mean more a pervading generational angst. I'm 24, so I'm wondering about like 15-18 year olds.

There is agreat artile about this in Ad Busters. the 'cool' kids of today are the hipsters. All style, no content. They are not fighting anything but consuming mindlessly. This part was awesome:

"We are the last generation, a culmination of all previous things, destroyed by the vapidity that surrounds us. The hipster represents the end of Western civilization-a culture so detached and disconnected that it has stopped giving bith to anything new."

    It's really sad.

No, they're too busy whining about how no one understands their feelings. Or they're collecting expensive gadgetry and obsessing over celebrities and reality TV. This generation of kids has no politics.

Hm, thanks for connecting the Adbusters article to my thoughts. I read snippets of it a week ago but thought it seemed more like Adbusters trying to bite the hand that feeds them. I can also see the connection to generational apathy.

Yeah, I'm wondering if kids have a sense of like, anger at the world they were born into and a fucked ecological environment, you know, and having 9/11 happen when you are young and stuff. Or if everyone is busy discovering social networking...

IMO, the equation hasn't changed for centuries, and is typical of a period when most teens are struggling to achieve a sense of identity in their personal ideology, occupation(s), sex roles, politics, and religion.

    15-18 = Adolescence = Anger x Rebellion

In the history of intergenerational relations one lament remains constant, even eternal: 'the world is full of ill-advised and ill-nurtured youth'. Every society confidently proclaims that its youth are 'the very worst youth'. Centuries pass by, the forms and structures of societies change irrevocably, new characters appear on the historical stage, but this generational refrain continues its regular rhythm.

'Youth were never more sawcie', Thomas Barnes commented in 1624, 'yea never more savagely saucie . . . the ancient are scorned, the honourable are contemned, the magistrate is not dreaded.'

I think the new kids are actually pretty awesome. They are problem solvers and not whiners like my own generation. When presented with a "road block" I've noticed today's youth get busy unblocking the road. Wasn't it last summer that 17 year old kid unlocked the iPhone?

Today's kids aren't waiting for permission to make changes, they are just going forward with what works. They are independent thinkers that don't wait for their elders to approve their actions. They know what is right and what is wrong, and respond to that, not to national decrees or new laws.

They aren't politically involved because American politics is broken. There is no point in being involved in something that doesn't work for them.

I am really excited about the next generation of leaders.

I do agree with you Paris. I just read an interesting YA novel 'Little Brother' about teens rallying against authority by using technology & questioning infringement on civil liberty. Maybe they are channelling their energies into tech.

The Adbusters article is more about people in their 20s. Unless 15-18 yr olds are hanging out in Williamsburg or something.

anomar, you remember that generational angst because you were a part of it, or near it, but don't you remember there also being happy fluffy teenagers too? Irritating athletes and cheerleaders? My point being that there's always going to be all of those groups at that age, from the really angry and aggro kids to the metal burnouts to the teen queens to the geeks.

But I do agree that many probably experience the world from a distance, or a disconnect, created by the fact that their means of communication form a barrier to certain kinds of interaction.

I like em! The kids 10 years before them were beyond cynical and shortsighted but these kids are a lot more in touch with their emotions and not so obsessed by shiny objects aka bling-bling. I saw an inspiring young man who was working for nations to address their carbon footprint. Good stuff. I think they're very angry about their academic/financial/professional prospects though.
