Default Bartending in a hotel restaurant...

Ok so I'm starting tonight at my first bartending job. I got a placement at a very nice restaurant in a hotel. I'm going to be working the service bar. It's a great company, I worked in housekeeping for them last year, great to their employees. I just got out of bartending school, and I loved it, I'm so glad to be going into the job with the behind bar experience. The only thing is I did my training in a nightclub, and I wondered how much different it would be. I also wondered since its in a very busy area that the locals avoid, and it's on the second floor of a hotel, I doubt there will be many people walking in other that those staying so I don't think the possibility of regulars is going to be there. Also at my restaurant the bar is open where the tables can see it, but I don't know (don't think) you can sit at the bar, so I don't know how stuff will work. Anybody worked service bar in a restaurant or in a hotel before? Hope it goes well, guess I'll find out tonight.

Just a thought, but I don't think [your place of employment] would think too kindly on their employees belonging to a site like SW. Especially in this day and age where employers actually Google around, you might want to be less descriptive Not very safe either because some creep that reads this could find exactly where you work, and you'd at the very least have to explain why a creep from a stripper site would be harassing you if he came and caused trouble.

Thanks for pointing it out UV; since the OP has changed her posting, I'm taking the liberty here

Are you sure you want to practically give away what restaurant you'll be working at?

I thought I'd be alright since there's two hotels in the same two blocks by the same name and two reasaurants in each, but good point, thanks

Eek. Sorry UV - I just though the OP had changed the reference to the place she would be working, so I changed yours.

Ax - you might consider just taking it out altogether and saying "a hotel" or something. We have some odd lurkers here.

I didn't read carefully - I just saw where she said that you guys made a good point and saw that she edited it. I've obviously subliminally been dying to edit some posts.

Didn't realize I left one in there. Edited one and assumed I was good. Hotel name withdrawn. Thanks.

There are 2 types of bartenders: one who works a bar and sells drinks directly to customers, and then service bartenders, who make drinks for the servers. Since you say your bar has seats and that you are service bartender, it's possible to do both. At some restaurants, bartenders perform both duties. At the end of your shift, the servers are supposed to tip you anywhere between 10% to 20% (it varies in the US) of their total drink sales. If this hotel gets busy, and the servers are making money, then you'll make money without having to deal with annoying customers. If you do both, you could make some serious money.

    I hope that helps!
