Default Should I have handled this differently?

    Here's the story.

Last night I was meeting a visiting friend for dinner at a hotel restaurant downtown. I paid $8 for valet parking, ate the dinner and was going to leave because I had other plans with someone I'm dating.

When I got back to the valet station they told me that one of the valet attendants dropped my keys in another car which belonged to a guest of the hotel, but they should be back soon. I sort of freaked out on the inside but I remained calm and said hey, why don't I take a cab to where I'm going and come by and get it in the morning? The manager paid for my cab fare and when I got back they paid me $20 for a $15 fare. They gave me about $37 total for cabs.

I went to go pick up the car today and they had it. I even tipped the guy who brought it back to me $5. But I'm thinking that they should have done more for me. I hate to be one of those people that bitches, and I know that people make mistakes, but the effin' valet people are not supposed to lose your keys in another person's car! Thank goodness they found them.

I'm thinking I could have gotten a free hotel stay or at least a meal out of this. But I wanted to just be cool about it and be nice and understanding. It really didn't cause me a ton of grief, I just thought it was insanely unprofessional, especially for a four-star hotel.

    Opinions?

I would have left it at that, but that's just me.

I think they did right by you. It would be one thing if you were flying out of town the next morning or something, or if the other car was never coming back, but they covered your cab and made things right. It cost you nothing but a bit of inconvenience. Sometimes people just make mistakes.

Yeah, I think they did the right thing. Sounds like everything worked out fine.

imo they should've comped you a free dinner or overnight. i agree the episode was unprofessional on whole. they tried to resolve it but obviously you weren't satisfied. they should've made sure you weren't upset when they returned the car.

isn't your time (going back and forth) worth something? they should've handed it with white gloves. i understand 'shit happens' but you fix it, even if it costs.

e.g. when my people screw something up, I fix it. personally. does it warrant the owner stepping in and giving it that personal attention? not monetary "worth it" by any definition but the problems get solved and our reputation is salvaged somewhat. the customers (direct consumers) i deal with for those situations never guess i'm the owner because i'm in there one-on-one.

not saying the owner/manager should get involved but you should've receive profuse apologies and some comps or similar.

but that shows service and that's what the hotel should've done imho. the four-star's and pricing hinges much on reputation. once that's gone, it'll take a LOT more than a couple of dinners and one-on-one discussion to gain it back. penny-wise, pound-foolish.

i'd write a letter to management or their corporate headoffice. just voice the complaint. if they're really worth anything, they'll offer to rectify it.

Ehh, I think they did the right thing. They covered the cost of the cabs, and I mean...yes, it is unprofessional, but mistakes happen everywhere. They did the right thing.

I don't know where you are at, but where I am at, valets are not owned by the establishment. They are contracted to outside companies.

If you press the matter with the hotel, maybe you can get 'more' stuff, but for what? Valet made a mistake, made you an offer, you accepted.

I'm just sometimes a pushover and I wanted to know if I was being a little too passive about them losing my keys in another guest's car. I wasn't super upset but I was a bit stressed and an offer for a free meal or something would have been appreciated. I do realize people make mistakes and in various jobs I've been the victim of someone trying to get free stuff or someone pissed off about something out of my control, so I am reluctant to ever complain. I wasn't planning on pressing the matter with the hotel. They did what they could. It's cool.

You may want to start reading up on consumer awareness anyway... is my favorite blog detailing crappy customer service and how to react to it.

But it does sound like in their case it was just an honest mistake and that they handled it well. After all, it all worked out... if your keys had been lost, I would have been mad and wanted recompense! It sounds like in their case they were apologetic, not clueless (as in they knew what had happened), and tried to solve it right away... all good customer service in the end. If they had been rude, of course I would have wanted to report it right away!

i understand your viewpoint. usually, i take the same stance (i'm not one to complain either).

but i really think they should've comped you a room for that night. you had to take a cab back and forth, taking up your valuable time. and frankly, cost-wise/savings-wise, the $37 cash they gave you probably was close to their actual overhead cost for a room (the rest of the markup is gross/net profit).

it just would've made better sense imo for them to give you a room than force you to go back and forth.

next time holdout for the free dinner and room.

I think you handeled it well...there was no damage to your car, no extra miles on it....you probably could have complained and gotten more but honestly, the fact that you were cool about it probably got the valet in less trouble, and EVERYBODY makes mistake. Sounds like it was no big deal and you did the right thing by everybody.
