    Default Microchips for animals

I have a ferret and a blind kitty and I want to get them chipped. Where should I go, how much does it cost... and I would appreciate any personal stories about it.

no personal stories, and I have no idea how much they cost, but check with your local aspca shelter. they will know where you can go and get it done and might even have a discount cupon that they can give you to save $$$. all pets from the raleigh aspca are chipped before they are put up for adaoption. I think all the spca shelters do it, so yours will deff know where to send you. good luck.

well you'll have to get your ferret chipped outside of
    CA. duh.

so my guess is you'll have to go to AZ if u want it done
BUT if your ferret gets lost and a person thinks to get them
checked for a chip (doubtful) the vet would most likely, depending
on their stance on ferrets and their view on bending rules, have to
contact authorities who would then euthanize your ferret or hand it
off to a AZ ferret rescue.

for the ferret at least I would suggest getting a ferret harness of
some sort that you can put a tag with your phone number
on. this way people would likely call you instead of involving
the authorities, though there is always that chance, so if
it did happen I would pretend I was living in AZ and just visiting CA.

Ask your vet about it. Honestly...most people wont even check for chips on a cat..because there are SO many strays. Unless he is wearing a collar or tattoo..something that shows he is owned by someone.

It isnt that expensive and your vet can do it in 2 minutes when you take him in for his annual shots.

you can chip a ferret, but my experience with ferrets is that most people don't realize it's someone's pet and will just let it wander around. A collar is probably better.

And same with a cat. People see a cat walking around and they think it's an outdoor cat and just leave it alone.

I think they can't hurt though, and they are pretty cheap these days.

They do it at my Petco for $39.

yeah, but just saying it's better than nothing. A wandering ferret will get like zero attention. A wandering ferret with a collar will get some attention.

I don't put mine in collars either. But unfortunately ferrets are not equipped to be strays and will usually die quickly from exposure and predators they aren't rescued.

I got my dog Zaine microchipped. He didnt even seem to feel it as he didn't react in any way. Def worth it for peace of mind. Pounds do check for them and it will give them your details even if your pet somehow ended up hundreds of miles away.

There's this huge sob story on Oprah or something where this kid's childhood runaway dog was found 7 years later and returned from 15 states away because it was microchipped.

But yeah, can't micro the ferret in Cali.

I got both my cats microshipped. It was a very simple procedure and it's comforting to me to know if they end up at the humane society, they will get home to me. I don't know how much it cost because it was included in their adoption fee.

I had my dog microchipped at the vet when I had him neutered. Very easy and cheap.

I don't think it's even possible for people to check for chips? AFAIK, chips can only be checked at the vet or humane society, ect. And they WILL check it because it's a lot easier to reunite a pet with it's owner than to find a new owner.

Every vet clinic and humane society checks the chips. It's the FIRST thing they do when they find a random/ lost/ stray animal.

I'm just saying, it's helped my mom get my escape artist cat back from the humane society many times. It's reunited people with a lot of lost pets. It's the fastest way to get a pet back, IMO.

True, people can't scan the chips themselves (unless they have one), but who do you think they would bring the pet to first? A vet maybe? Vets check these things religiously.

Also, I used to give these needles. They are VERY sharp. Half the time, the animals didn't even notice. It's very quick, and it's really not that expensive at all ($50, I think).

True...what I meant was that most people who find a stray cat as opposed to a dog wont assume it has an owner and take it in where it CAN be scanned. Even shelters dont always scan cats because there are SO many strays that they dont assume it belongs to anyone.Sadly, the one I worked with only scanned dogs until I said something.

I'm not saying dont do it..better safe then sorry. Its just less likely to be useful in a cat then in a dog.

In Aus, all cats with microchips have tattoos on their ear... why don't they do that as well?

i got my cat microchipped when i got her fixed. i can't remember how much it cost. they actually gave it to me for free, along with a bunch of discounts.

a year and a half later she went missing. i had actually assumed she'd been hit by a car, but my neighbor told me another neighbor of ours had been trapping animals and calling animal control, without even checking to see what he'd caught. i found my cat at the pound on her last day, with the "feral" cats and a caution on her...and they had not checked her microchip. they didn't even believe it was my cat till i told them to check her microchip and practically pissed themselves when it turned out there was one.

i'd've never gotten my cat back if she hadn't been microchipped. but don't expect to be contacted. i wish i had been . it was a very depressing experience seeing all those cats, most of whom obviously had homes as clean and healthy as they were, on the way to their deaths. but that's another topic.

Ooooh. I thought it was like a lojack for your pet.

It's legal for vets to treat ferrets in CA, although there are a few assholes out there, without a doubt. I guess chipping the ferret wouldn't probably do me much good since someone would be more likely to steal her than anything else (you have to drive out of state to get them and a lot of people want them for that reason).

Not a lojack...its a chip that has your name, number and address on it so you can be called when the vet or shelter scans it.

I wanted to get my dog micro chipped, but my ex vet wouldn't do it. He said not to bother because it's expensive and no one would want him because he's a mut... I guess he just assumed animals only get lost because of theft. Thanks for the Petco info! I'll probably take him there in the next few weeks.

Just a heads up, the microchip is useless if you don't send in the paperwork that has all your details on it to register yourself (and thus your pet) on "the network".

Marnie was automatically microchipped due to coming from the AWL (animal shelter). I did leave her without a collar for ages however, as has been said, a cat with a collar will attract attention (and be regarded as a pet) than one without.

And Lys is correct, all pets are 'tattooed' on the inside of their ears when they have been microchipped here in Australia.

I was volunteering at the local animal/pet expo last year when the AWL was offering real cheap micro-chipping of pets. The majority were dogs (of all sizes) and a few cats.. less than a handful of all the dogs reacted to the one minute procedure. It is that quick and it is painless. The dog reacts to the owner's reaction more than the procedure itself from what I saw.

The actual microchip that the AWL used is just bigger than a grain of rice. It is really that small. It is so worth doing and your local humane society (or animal shelter) will be able to do it for you inexpensively if you don't have a vet already.
