Tell me again why anyone wants to live in Florida?

I'm all set, just went on a vodka run.

I lived in West Palm Beach for almost 3 years and went through 3 hurricanes...Jeanne, Katrina, and Wilma. And thats part of the reason why I moved...but I'm sure you'll be safe. Just make sure you have everything you need, and stay glued to the news for updates. Its not a fun experience, but I'll pray that everyone stays safe.
People live in trailer parks because they can't afford houses, but people spend *more* money to live in Florida. I don't understand it at all. I guess they figure it's worth the hurricanes, seven-inch flying roaches, crippling humidity, and insufferable heat... for some reason.

Well, I grew up here....wasn't like I decided to move here after living somewhere else
Stay safe!

^^Right there with you guys. Gonna go out tonight and get the essentials: cat food, dog food, litter, water, beer and human food.
For Yek: a lot of folks live down here cause we're stranded in a manner of speaking. With costs of everything rising (like home insurance, property tax and the like), a lot of people can't afford to move without first selling their homes, and not many folks are wanting to come down here and buy the aforementioned homes and buy into all those expenses with the pennies-on-the-dollar jobs Florida usually has to offer. So, we're stuck.
*sigh* Least the winters are nice...
That's a bummer, Violet. I'm sorry to hear it.

^^ Thanks, Yek! (If it helps, lately I feel about FL the way you did about Cali back when!) Hubby likes it here but still. BLAAHHH!!!![]()
Love your avatar BTW.![]()

Marasmus ... "Ladies don't fart. They butt-laugh."
Marasmus says, "Oh no, that wasn't gas, it was merely a rectal chuckle."
Marek says, "A friend of mine got punched in the face by a dominatrix stripper about two weeks ago and I thought of you."
When I first moved here it was heaps better then Jersey...now...not so much I'm ready to get out.But we're trapped...with the housing market the way it is, if we can hang on for a few more years we can make one hell of a profit which can help us move out west. Right now we might break even and be able to go ...nowhere. So we're stuck...hurricanes and all.
Yeah, it's pretty hard to move to another state. Well, more a pain in the ass than anything. Think driver licenses, car license plate, out-of-state tuitions (hell no), and other legal, trivial stuff. We might have cockroaches but when I stayed in North Carolina, I had my first experience with scorpions. And those things look way more threatening than roaches.
Driving on hills makes me motion-sick anyway. And beaches are great. I doubt this storm will do any major damage, I don't start worrying till category 4 or 5.
Plus when the hurricanes don't do damage, it's party time! Work and classes are cancelled, I catch up with friends I haven't seen for years because we have nothing to do, we cook our food over a fire and take cold showers only to sweat half an hour later. No one has to look good because everyone knows the straighteners won't turn on and the clothes can't be properly washed. I find it to be a great bonding, hippie experience.
There's only so much you can learn in one place...
The longer you wait, the more time that you waste.

i'm already GD tired of everyone around here (tampa) worrying/complaining about it.
the only way a cat 1 is going to effect us in any way more severe than power outages (which DO suck ass. trust me)... is if it hits the bay directly, and while that's still a possibility, it's only one of many.
and even if that DID happen you'd still only see minor flooding, some small or older tree uprooting, light debri scatter, maybe some minimal roof damage, and some broken car windows (which happened to us last time and was so not fun).
i went to walmart today to do my non meat&produce shopping for the week (yeah walmart is evil. i know, but it's also cheap) and the place was overrun by wheezing elephants buying hurricane lamps and cranky elderly women buying 4 pallets of bottled water. everyone was saying "blah blah blah katrina blah blah". .......... nevermind the VAST difference between this storm and katrina. where the fuck are these people from? am i the only floridian in this state?
at this point my worries are:
will my club be open tuesday?
if it's open, will it even be worth going in?
where should i park the cars so a tree branch doesn't fly through the windows?
will my dog keep me up all night monday or tuesday night because of thunder?
should i stalk up on beer tomorrow in case the stores are closed on tuesday?
that's about it for the moment. although tornados developing worries way more than anything else, but stock-piling food isn't going to stop my roof from flying off.
*end rant*
ps. don't get me wrong, i'm not saying hurricanes can't be potentially dangerous. i just think people are far to willing to over react way too quickly. there were no eggs in the store today. eggs, people. WTF are you going to do with eggs if the power is out?!?! *sigh*
the worst i've had happen is a few years ago my power went out for a WEEK. now that was totally fucking miserable. i hope like hell that doesn't happen again. even in those situations though, plenty of stores were open the next day, plenty of bottled water and food everywhere, etc. it would take a storm far more severe to shut down the city to the point of needing a stockpile.

Just saw on the AM news that it looks like it's going over Key West.
Everyone down in Florida stay safe and keep us posted!
I'm not even originally from here and I'm less worried than 95% of people. I was even joking around with a neighbor last night when she asked if I was prepared for the storm. I was like yup, I have an umbrella!!!
I was here for Wilma, my power was out for 2 weeks, now that was hell.
I feel you, I just stocked up on cat food and water!
Pretty Penny, I grew up in FLA so I am with you...the only reason I posted this was because if it does come, it'll be a disruption...can't work, power will go out for a few days, etc.

The local news stations exagerate grossly on the "Tropical Strom/ Cat. 1 Hurricane".

me too.
i'm not worried about it being some tragedy.
but i am worried about work. i'm broke with a lot of bills i've got to pay really soon. this is not helping me do that.
also, the whole north side of my apartment is big old windows. i'm not sure if i should bring my cat in. i've got to do a bunch of stuff (clean up, laundry, etc) ahead of time in case i lose power. got to eat up my refrigerated food so it doesn't go bad in case i lose power. i don't know what i'll do without a/c.
nothing against the area to my south and east, but i'm really hoping fay heads that way and leaves tampa alone.
