Arrow Communicating with someone behind bars

A friend of mine is in county jail and I need to get in contact with him quickly. I plan on sending a letter to him through overnight mail. If I write a letter- should I include a stamps & envelopes? Are those things free in jail or does he have to buy them? I don't think he has any money at his disposal in there but I don't know for sure.

He tried to call me, but I never realized cell phones can't accept collect calls- I did a bit of digging online and I see I have to set up a prepaid account for him to call me. I don't mind doing this but I would hate to lose money if I set it up and I still can't get call to the phone. (I read that when setting it up you shouldn't tell them it is a cellphone or they won't do it). Secondly what if he is released? They won't tell me the court date- he was arrested on friday, anyone know how long those things take to happen? There was a warrant out for him over something that happened about 2 or 3 years ago.

Call and ask when you can visit him.

Type up inmate information and the city or county that he resides.

I had an ex boyyfriend who was in jail for 6 months and I kept in contact with him the whole time. You can write him a letter, but I don't think you can include stamps and envelopes. Usually, they're supplied with them and the jail has their own stamping system.

As far as the phone thing goes, I had to do the same thing and set up an account so my ex could call my cell. I could get regular calls on my phone, but it would only be for like 3 min. If you go with the right company (which usually they would tell you), you'll be able to get the call. I think their is only one major company that is for that purpose only.

As far as if he gets released, you'll probably have to wait and ask when you're able to go visit since they won't tell you. Which alot of them won't...and for what reason I don't know.

If you need my help or have any other questions, you can PM me.

If you know for certain (and you CAN call and confirm) his place of detention then mail him a letter - include in that letter a money order for say 20$ towards his account or canteen (different jails call it different things) they will deposit it and he can then buy the writing paper pens and pay for postage with it - along with soap cigs and chocolate bars.
Now - just to be sure - when you do call to confirm where he is being held ask them their protocol on funding his account - they may have a procedure all their own -
    good luck. 4 him too.

He'll need money on his books so he can buy stamps and envelopes from Canteen. Also you can receiver calls to your cellphone if you get a prepaid account, my boyfriend actually could buy like a calling card thing that allowed him to call me at home or on my cell from Canteen as well. You'll need to look up the court date info on your state's or local court webpage under court case information. You can also call and find out the court date as well.

Thanks everyone- I set up a prepaid acct so he could contact me...I figure it is faster than sending mail.

How will he know there is an account? The phone company had me on hold for over 30 mins- I just followed the directions online on how to use moneygram to fund an account.

i dont think they will tell him you have a phone account. how would they know. you will have to send a letter regular mail. i dont think they will accept an overnight. also DO NOT send stamps. they will send the whole letter back.
way back in the day people used to put LSD and other assorted drugs on stamps they will not accept them. he will have to have money in his canteen account to buy stamps and envelopes the jail does not provide them. you will have to either send a money order or go to the jail to put it in his account. call the jail and ask if they only allow specific money orders.

Unfortunately, I've been in county jail so I know about the phone thing (thankfully I wasnt there long enough to get mail HAHA!)

He would have to try to call you again to find that out. They are just regular pay phones in the jail. If he calls you, it will go through now. If not, send him a calling card. You can send him a calling card if you want, he can use it. They're just payphones like anywhere else.

All jails are different, so you ll have to call and ask for the rules. Hopefully he calls you first though!

^^Yeah that makes sense that they won't tell him, what a bummer. He's called a few times and I don't know what he hears on his end- all I know is when I accept it won't go through. I hope he will try again soon. I guess I have no choice but to do the letter route, just seems like it will take a while cause he's 2 states away and I can't spare the cash or time to pay him a visit.
