    Default Best vegan cheese

What are the best tasting vegan cheeses out there?

I'd rather not go spend a ton of money on grody tasting cheeses when I know some vegans on the board can point me to some yummy stuff.

Let me know if you find one. They all taste gross to me.

that's like saying the least stinkiest pile of shit.

They are all gross, so with that said...the least gross, imo, is Vegan Gourmet. My boyfriend and I made a tofu lasagne, but he put real mozzarella on his half and I put this on mine. Well, his got all melty and brown....mine got all melty after a little more time and looked like runny sour cream. But it very easily shredded and it tasted legit. He even said so.

    The cheddar is okay.
But one thing I notice (unllike a lot of vegan milk fakes) is that they go bad fast! And by fast, I mean the rate that normal cheese would get moldy. Yeah, it even gets moldy. it's authentic!

I hate vegan cheese. The meat substitutes are fine, the egg substitutes are fine, and I love vegan food, but there's just no substitute for real cheese!

So most of it is all gross huh? I wanted to try alternatives to regular cow cheese.

What do you mean? There are soy imitation cheeses that contain no animal products. Many contain casein which is a milk derivative but vegan ones do exist.

Are you vegan? If you are, I can't make any recommendations. However, if you are looking for an alternative to regular cow cheese then try some of the soy cheeses WITH casein. The dairy is minimal and they are very tasty, though still not fully vegan.

I was basically agreeing with everyone else. None are worth checking out. They're not yummy by any means.

I just remembered something. There's some way of making a raw, vegan cheese out of nuts. I have zero recipes but it's not bad served as part of a raw dish. I can't say it tastes like "cheese" but it's pretty good!

if you just want alternatives to regular cow cheese, goat cheese is pretty awesome, as is cheese made with raw cow or goat milk (v. mild, smooth, and quite wonderful).

i haven't had sheep-milk cheese, but i suppose if you find any, that's another option.

A lot of vegan cheeses are made with hydrogenated oils. If ethics are not of paramount importance to you, I do not see why you'd choose vegan cheese (especially those containing hydrogenated oils) over real cheese. If cow's milk is what bothers you, try goat cheese, sheep cheese, etc.

Here is a list of many varieties of sheep's milk cheese: http://www.gourmetfoodstore.com/cheese/sheep-cheese.asp

On this topic, I had heard that most cheese was mixed with a meat product (cow lining or something?) but that there was a way to get vegetarian (not vegan) cheese?

    Is my information correct?

wow, that's disgusting if it's true! I've never heard anything like that and I'm pretty knowledgable about shit like that.

and I just thought of something...is cream cheese considered cheese?

    Because if so, tofutti FTW!

Huh. My friend said most cheeses have animal fat in them from being strained through cow's lining or something. She's usually pretty knowledgable but she could be wrong...

but I've been worried about cheese's effects on my kosher for some time now.

yes- most cheese is not vegetarian because it contains rennet, which is the lining of a cow's stomach.

you can get vegetarian cheese, but you have to look hard for it and read the ingredients. most commercial cheese does have rennet.

    Yes, that it's keira...

Having cow's lining means it combines meat and dairy which makes it not kosher. *sigh*

They have artificial rennet nowadays and a lot of dairies are using it. You can get plenty of delicious cheeses with a hescher (kosher certification) on the label.

there used to be an amazing vegan block of cheddar at a super-walmart in billings, MT. but ironically now that im back in california i cant find one anywhere. Ive been meaning to try the rice cheeses but they are pretty pricey for such a tiny amount.

if nacho cheese is what you are looking for look up a raw cashew recipe it is amazing! ...i tried it at a organic/vegan restaurant in Santa Monica
