Do they work in african-american hair? If not, what else is my best bet? I don't really want Great Lenghts because of the price.

I don't recommend fusion. I had great lengths as well awhile ago and it was NOT worth the money, I paid about $1200 for a full head... you lose way too much hair with them and they tangle so easily. I'd go with a weave, which is what I have.

I have been wearing extensions since 2002 (6+ years). I have tried Great Lengths, Hair Dreams, Fusion......and a few others along the way. I consider myself an expert on the subject
I had my Great Lengths installed by a "famous" hair guy in Dallas, and my BF paid in excess of $2500 for them at the time (no lie). They FRIZZED out and were impossible to take care of. It took hours to smooth them down. The hair was heavy and just....ugh. Never again. Not to mention IMPOSSIBLE to take out. It took 2 days to get them all out and you literally have to break each and every bond. No thanks.
I also tried Hair Dreams - which is a bit cheaper (around $1000), but they shed like CRAZY. I lost tons of them in a short period of time.
Don't get anything "sewn" into your head. I have friends who have gotten tracs sewn in, and aside from the massive headache it will give you, they tend to fall out and you end up looking ridiculous.....Also, DON'T glue anything in. Glue is obviously a big no-no.
I have my Fusions bonded with wax. It does not damage your hair - and they slide out when you are ready to have them removed.
I am actually wearing Fusion's right now, and have been off/on for the past few years. They are cheap (around $100-200 for the actual hair). For the hair + installation/removal of the hair, my bill is about $500 every 6 months. Not bad at all!
My stylist that does them for me is black. I assume black girls CAN get Fusion, and I would recommend it.

Because of the texture of our hair, sewn n tracks aren't likely to 'slip out' as they might with Caucasian hair. I'd recommend finding a weaver who is an excellent sewer who won't braid your own hair too bulky, giving the weave an unnatural appearance.
Then, go with Remy Indian hair in a loose wave for the most realistic effect. I've heard good things about Malaysian hair as well but personal experience solely with Remy. Quality Remy hair on a weft will be fairly expensive but can be reused for a year or longer if you take good care of it.
I have thick hair and have paid about $400 for 3 bundles of hair. I generally end up using 2 and a half and saving the rest. Be wary of any Remy hair that is under $100/bundle! Good luck!

I actually really liked my Great Lengths, but they were super expensive because I had to have 10 bundles put in, when the average is 4-6. My I have a lot of tight wavy, very full-bodied hair, and my individual hairs are REALLY thick, so we had to put in SO MANY. I didn't want to do it again, because the stylist was like "Really, we should probably put in twelve to match your poofiness." Which was going to be about $3500. No thanks. If you have thick hair, DON'T get GLs. If you have average bodied hair, go for it. They can last for 6 months with proper care.
I actually really recommend Great Lengths if you have the time, money, and are committed to taking really good care of them.
Otherwise, I like tracks, pinch braids, and hairlocs/I tip fusion.
i have heard such bad things about fusion from friends that are stylists. people come in from bad jobs and real hair is ruined. i wear sew ins about half the time the rest of the time its in micros. i do them myself its not hard. i recommend going to the salon and getting a sew in. make sure you tell them not to cornrow your hair too tight or make the cornrows too big. plus the let your real hair rest and grow because there is no heat and pulling all the time like you would do at work.
