    Default Handbag help

I've been a handbag whore but have decided to get rid of any leather and animal products I have. I like designer bags but they are ALL made of leather. I have looked into the Betseyville (Betsey Johnson) bags which don't use animal materials and I will probably get one. However, I want a more "grown up" looking and upscale purse. I BADLY want an LV damier speedy but alas, it's leather so that's a no go. Anybody have any suggestions?

    Some of the Betseyville candidates:

Here you can have your bag custom made however you like. I've seen a couple girls at school carry these and they are super cute. http://www.1154lill.com/custombags/

The first one looks the most grown up and I would buy it if it wasn't for my weird issue with cherrys, lol.

Yeah, that's why I wanted suggestions. I'm probably going to buy one of those just because I love Betsey and I could use it for running every day errands. I want (and dare I say "need") a more upscale/adult looking one too for job interviews/ nice dinners etc.

That website to design your own purse is really cool, what a great idea!

Meh, I want the LV speedy but I wish they would make it with pleather ahaha

If you want something that looks upscale but is low priced for interviews and stuff what about the Botkier for Target line? Ive never bought one, but they aren't real leather and Botkier is awesome.

Going leather free has been a blessing in disguise. I save so much money because I can't buy most luxury shoes and bags.

My favorite is Stella McCartney for luxury. I have a really awesome clutch I got off ebay and I jsut saw that it's on SALE ...half off!!!! from Neimans! I have it in black, but I might have to get this too....

    http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/ca...0740cat9270735

But I also found some really cool ones from Juicy Couture, of all places. Only a couple of them. You really have to scout it out.

I have a couple of things from Matt & Nat too. Honestly, if you're a handbag whore, you'll probably think they look cheap.

But also, you don't have to get rid of your old leather bags just because you choose not to buy them anymore. The deed is done. Just take good care of them. I still have a gorgeous Marc Jacobs bag that I can't bear to let go from before I decided to stop buying leather. I just make it a point not to carry it when I'm wearing my PETA shirts

I love the design your own purse site!! I think a few of those (mostly the clutches, though... all the satchels and handbags don't look quite as sophisticated) look very upscale!

it is hard to find 'upscale' non-leather bags that are spiffy and grown-up and not fabric, hemp, etc... damn hippies

try some of these! the first one has some really nice looking bags, i think you may like 'em...

scroll down on this site to where it says "shiraleah..." GREAT bags...

I love the first 2. Also love the clutch Emily posted. I like fun bags though, can't stand the grandma looking stuff so many designers put out.

Thank you for all the suggestions! I've been selling my bags, the only one I have left is a leather Michael Kors bag that I'm in love with.. it's absolutely perfect and I'm really having a hard time parting with it. I may just keep it, since like Emily said, the deed is already done, right?

I think I'll look into the Stella McCartney stuff, this will probably sound stupid and you wouldn't understand unless you're obsessed with bags like I am.. but I want an expensive bag. It doesn't have to have logos all over it or anything, but I want something comparable to the LV bag I want (but won't buy).

I think Stella McCartney is the only designer doing luxury in fake leather. Other designers are doing luxury in canvas, velvet or that see through plastic crap, but unfortunately, most of the time they are trimmed in leather. I guess there's Le Sportsac, but I can't get into those. what do you think of this SM bag?

I'm very disappointed with faux leather products. I know it is possible to make it not look cheap but they almost all look cheap!

oh yeah, good luck finding a luxury car without any leather too! They exist, but your options are way limited. They will be special order and you will not get a reduction in price (because the leather is standard.)

I just wanted to add.. these bags are my favorite obsession and they look very classic and VERY grown up.

Plus, Fendi is not something you see EVERYone having.. Like LV's or Coach. So that makes them all the better. Plus there are lots of styles that are non-leather and non-animal

I love Fendi! I was dying for a spy bag.. but I'm pretty sure all the handles are made of leather. I almost want to make an exception to my leather rule for handbags

yeah, those fendi bags are all trimmed in leather, unless there is something I'm not seeing.

Anyway, that is a leather couch, but she is saying now that she's making the transition.

I just want to say, L&L (and others), good for you for sticking to your ethics shopping for bags. Personally, I like the first Betsy bag with the cherry. Its pretty classy and kind of sassy-looking. Out of curiosity, how do you feel about buying your leather bags used? You're not contributing to the leather industry directly but some people aren't okay with even carrying leather products.
I really don't feel so inclined to shop for leather luxury items either but whenever I find something made of vinyl or made of plastic that's cute, it always breaks not too long after I've used it. I was so excited to find a totally darling vinyl Guess clutch that I took to work religiously. It took about three months before the clasp began to rip through the material and now, I can't use it at all. Before that, I had a matching set of Roxy bags. The handles broke when the vinyl/plastic wore out. I just use the hell out of my bags.
Now, I'm just going to buy either leather (minimally) or denim. One of my favorite Betsy bags is denim but the other one I want is leather.
Emily, how well do those SM bags hold up over time? have you ever had one where the pleather or vinyl tears? Does the product have a guarantee? I should check that out.

I was looking on the site and it looks like Prada has quite a few non-leather bags to choose from, too. Yummy.

Well, I'm abusing my stella clutch for awhile now, and it pretty much looks brand new.

I don't think she'd be in business very long if her products didn't hold up.

Leather does not mean quality, and conversely, fake leather does not mean crap. And for 2nd hand leather. For me, I don't think so. It's just not my style anymore. Besides, someone else might buy that used leather product that would have otherwise bought new. Plus I'm not really a 2nd hand kinda girl.

Oh yeah, I forgot about prada....but I think the zipper pull is leather.
