Default Gators and Snakes in your backyard

Now this is just GREAT.... (excerpt)

Gators among those fleeing Fay's Florida deluge
By BRIAN SKOLOFF – 1 hour ago
MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — As if a fourth straight day of rain from Tropical Storm Fay wasn't enough, weary residents are now dealing with quintessentially Floridian fallout: alligators, snakes and other critters driven from their swampy lairs into flooded streets, backyards and doorsteps.
National Guardsman Steve Johnson was wading through hip-deep water Wednesday night when his flashlight revealed an alligator drifting through a neighborhood of flooded mobile homes.
"I said, 'The heck is that?' and there was an alligator floating by," Johnson said. "I took my flashlight and was like, 'You've got to be kidding me, a big old alligator swimming around here.'"
The erratic and stubborn storm has dumped more than 2 feet of rain along parts of Florida's low-lying central Atlantic coast this week. The system continued its slow, wet march Thursday by curving back from the ocean to hit the state for a third time.
Alligators live in all 67 Florida counties, and state officials say they receive more than 18,000 alligator-related complaints each year. But the floodwaters heighten the risk of an encounter with people because the creatures search for a safe place to wait out the storm.

Besides the humidity, huge bugs, congested traffic, bad healthcare, hurricanes, poor govt services, and now migrating critters. Makes me really want to move there. Eh?

Melbourne is the town next to mine.

Ready for some EW? In floods around here, the fire ants gather together to form a floating ball. It looks like a sponge floating in the water. Until it hits you, then hundreds of bitey ants are crawling all over you. UGH!

No real snake or gator messes in this town. At least that I heard of. Lots of lakes where yards once were.... fun times.

They are a snake you do NOT wanna mess with. they are venomous. Yikes. They are rarely, but can be fatal. They're floaters, unlike other water snakes. They tend to stay at the surface.

Leave it alone and head the other way. It wont stalk you or anything.

No gators, crocs, snakes or balls of fire ants here! IN fact the only time I've seen a wild gator is on Alligator Alley....and I live technically IN the Everglades!! Where my house is built used to be glades and is pretty much the furthest west you are allowed to build...I can walk to wild Everglades. No gators or crocs here. Not one in 8 years...I thought there would be gators everywhere when I moved here..nope.

The ball of ants thing is weird though...never seen that, but we do have fire ants so I'll be on the lookout during storms...they hurt like little motherfuckers!!!

^^CK, I encountered the ball of fire ants deal when we lived in North Laud. I remember we had some big storm come through...I think it was in 1999 or so. Not quite a hurricane, but a TON of rain and lots of flooding. When the rains let up a bit, hubby and I went outside of our apartment to see how things looked. We already had water seeping up into our apartment, so sloshing through the knee-deep parking lot was no big thing, we thought. Suddenly I felt something sharp on my thigh. Looked down and there were like 2378932 of the little buggers on me. OWWWW. I started hollering and ran. Hubby had no idea what was going on, but he sure found out 4 seconds later!

Fay's raining lots on my area now, but I still love it down here. I just saw lots of wet leaves on the ground when I was last out. We have decent pest control here, thankfully

This is nothing new....whenever there is a lot of rain in Florida, the snakes move to higher ground and that means houses sometimes.

Gators? I don't think so...probably one or two were reported being seen after the rain and then it's extrapolated to a major problem.

The funny thing about gators... I've been in Florida for almost 6 years and so far I have seen ONE wild gator. ONE. The rest were at the Brevard Zoo.

Heh. Those fuckers are hiding from me!

When I lived in Florida I encountered a 10 foot gator in person. Scared the freaking shit out of me... not to mention I was in a canoe in the middle of a huge lake and it was 3 feet away.

I also came in contact with wild boars, a couple panthers, tons of snakes, giant cockroaches, several sharks, lots of dolphins and turtles. oh.. and these weird fox-cat things, lots of osprey, hawks... and there was a bald eagle nest in the corner of my yard.

I'm not exaggerating. I lived on the edge of a nature preserve.

I see wild gators quite often, actually. There's this wildlife refuge thing on the way to the beach, and I usually have to stop at least once to move the turtles out of the road. They're also all along the way to NASA.
Snakes, we have a family of black ones at my house. They creep me out, but they stay outside...
But the spiders... those things are scary. I've literally been chased by them. Like, standing up on top of a chair and the thing climbs up the chair to get me. Ugggghh.
