Default no more hip hop at the club...

i just found out Tuesday that we as djs are no longer allowed to play rap,hip hop,and some R&B at my club. this makes some of the Dancers very mad, and this make me the new C.E.O of the shit dept. I told all the Girls that it was the owner and manager who made this rule not me, but now most of the hate me and there tips show it.

So if any one has any upbeat music that has a good up beat tempo that is kind like hip hop but not (if that makes sense) that would be rad.

some things that i played last night
    M.I.A paper planes
    Estro wicked little girls
and some random mashups that i found.

so any and all help would be great thank you all

Try Lucas. It's hiphop, but more indie and upbeat and I can squeak it by in "no hiphop" clubs. The managers make these rules because the customers with money don't like to sit around listening to "My Humps" and "I Was Gittin' Some Head" 867,461 times a night. Trust me, everyone makes more money in the long run.

I'm the queen of stuff like this.. I'm drunk right now, so I'm no good right now but I listen to rap in my personal life but don't dance to it at work because I'm too white. I'll come back in the morning with some suggestions

    Most rap rock will work.

    Beastie Boys too.

And um... those Jay-Z/Linkin Park songs work.

    Hmmm.... what else?

Try using current Pop and R&B hits, and maybe some of the more classic ones from the 90s and earlier 2000s.

the owner of my club gets into these moods where she feels like its too much fighting in my club because of the music. so even on nights when theres not one white customer...she wants us to play rock or other than rap. this lasts about 2 or 3 weeks, then we dancers slowly start bringing back the music WE PAY to dance to. But when we have to, I do a lot of sean paul or something like that, or rnb or reggaeton. if they say bad words its in spanish and she dont know,
    ugh i hate her.

Yeah most customers with money don't want to hear 'Soulja Boy' eight times a night at every club they go to. I know I will leave if I hear it, lol. Or any club that plays hard-core rap all fucking night long.

But then the draconian reaction of management doesn't help, either.

And since management usually lacks any sort of gonads, they invariably leave it up to the DJ to deal with the bad reaction of the dancers--usually never bothering to even bring it up or explain it themselves. I will never forget working one Race Week in Daytona (mostly redneck) where the club hired 8-9 new black girls and about the same number of new white girls who only liked rap, and left it up to me to explain we had to play a lot of classic rock and countryish stuff, no rap whatsoever, and only a little R & B. There were a lot of pissed off dancers that week.

One thing that can help is to play the female R & B or rap stars (Ciara, Beyonce, J. Lo, etc.). They don't brag incessantly about getting their dick sucked and actually sound like they can read and write. If they are collaborating with a male rapper you can usually get by just fine if you just cut out the first 30 seconds of the song where the guy brags about how cool he is.

Like that J. Lo song where fucking Ja Rule goes 'What's my motherfuckin' name?" in the beginning, cut that shit right out, and it's a fine song. I don't give a fuck what his name is, and the customers don't either. Or the Beyonce song "Check on it" with Jay-Z singing about gangstas in the first 20 seconds. Most of us are sick to death of everyone playing gangsta all the time, so cut that shit right out, and all the manager hears is Beyonce's sexy voice in a cool song.

If you have Traktor and the male rapper starts in with the illiterate bragging again halfway through the song you can jump ahead about 20 seconds to where the graphics bar shows the song is basically the same, and cut that shit out easily as well. Not elegant, no--but neither is listening to some asshole telling us how great he is 5,384 times, for dropping out of school and getting his dick sucked.

Also if you are allowed to play only some rap or R & B, choose who you play it for carefully. Make sure they are the good tippers, not the ones who yell at you from the stage because the managers' rules suck and don't tip even when you do play what they like. Also avoid playing it for women whose dancing technique consists entirely of turning their back to the audience and jiggling their enormous ass for 3 minutes straight. Play it for women who will put on a show and get guys to the rail, not scare them away.

That's where you have to put some steel in your voice and tell them 'Yes, there is a difference.' Because of course there is a great deal of difference. Don't let them try to alter reality just for a measly 5-10$ tip, it's not worth it. Some of them will try it--and also with the slow whiny songs like 'Apologize'.

"That's not slow!" They will protest indignantly, thinking you are cut from the same cloth as the horny, desperate customer types who agree with everything they say. Uh, yes it is slow and I'm not playing the fucking song...

Then soften it a bit and say 'Look, I don't have a problem with Yin-Yang Twins, but the management does, and I don't want to get fired.' If she wants to argue about it more, put the steel back in.

Especially if it's a dancer who isn't tipping anyway. Why risk getting into trouble trying to appease them by playing iffy stuff, especially if they are so stupid they can't tell the difference between Yin-Yang and Beyonce?

Stick to your guns, and eventually they will appreciate it when you play them Ciara, instead of Kid Rock or some other rock/rap (which might still get you in trouble if management is being severe). The only problem you might run into is if you are in one of those clubs where the managers are so imbecilic and assholish that they will forbid you to play music a lot of dancers like, but get mad at you if the dancers complain. I have experienced this, and it sucks. That's when you move on ASAP.

I hate it when they do that!!! Some people don't understand that all hip hop music is not about dick sucking and all that other stuff. I feel like If you paying to work why not listen to what you want! Now I also agree that no song should be played more than twice and thats letting it slide. I dance to everything. I say what Paige said would be good.

woah, how much rap have you listened to? ! a "little" intimidating huh listening to some brutha brag on all his hot shit, big dicks included. yeah, i so much rather hear the same old angst ridden whining from some outdated "alternative" band. over and over and over...

it really pisses me off that as "professionals" you would find it so repelling to even attempt to research the genre of music of which you are speaking. or that you would make such a pathetic generalization. envy much?

Ooops...where are my manners. Mr. D is very spot on in his assessment Madmonk. In lieu of finding a more "settled" club to work in maybe give a listen to the selection of remixes... I have used some of the dance remakes to get the songs to fly in the club. Good luck MM.

Got me in tears over here with this.........why would a club ban hiphop/rap from being played in the club??

Relax, there's no need to get pissed off. Penis envy has nothing to do with it.

My research in listening to guys bragging, years and years of it-especially about getting their dicks sucked--has led me to the discovery that it is boring. So if I'm going to cut out rap lyrics to get a song played, the bragging shit is the first to go.

If you work in a club that has instituted a No Rap policy, there are certain ways to get around it to keep the dancers happy. I could just play rock & techno, but by expending a little effort I can wind up playing a lot of R & B and even some rap in some of these clubs.

My research in listening to "What's my motherfuckin' name?" a few hundred times made it apparent that by cutting that part out, I could then play the song even in a No Rap club, thus pleasing the dancer onstage who would maybe really like to hear that, or maybe some Ciara, whereas leaving it in could get it ruled out entirely.

I had a manager in a No Rap club in Daytona, try to tell me that Maria Carey's 'Fantasy' was rap, which wasn't allowed. His definition of rap, BTW, was "anything that rhymes". Which of course ruled out anything after 1350 AD. So I cut out the beginning with the rapper (which is nothing like what I cut out now) and he never said anything again.

I even do it to some of my favorite songs. I fucking love Chingy 'Holiday Inn' but I usually cue it in, especially if they only allow some rap.

The whiny alternative stuff--I almost posted about that tonight, haha. I try to let the dancers choose their own music at the beginning of the night by using the jukebox, and I swear they all picked the worst whiny alternative stuff ever. But it's too hard to even think of posting from work, usually. But where I will play some rap and a lot of R & B, I won't play whiny shit, ever. Maybe at the beginning of the night to get it out of the way and keep them happy if they want it that's it.

Oh here's another great song you can use but chop out the first 40 seconds or so with Jay-Z "yo, the rainman is back!" etc.

'Umbrella', by Rihanna. Once he shuts the fuck up and she starts singing it s a great song, very sexy.

Oh, how I wish my club would do something like this (perhaps not so draconian, but a middle ground?). The cognitive dissonance of me, so pale I glow in the dark, in an ankle length gown, onstage trying in vain to dance to "Shake Dat Ass", is amazing. I've resorted to doing the Chicken Dance.
On the plus side, the fact that the customers with money hate the music on the floor makes it that much easier to sell suites, where they play actual music, as opposed to dick jousting over a drum machine...

    Sorry, /threadjack.

And yes, if you cut out dude telling everybody how cool he is, a lot of the female artists are really good.

We've got 4 stages open at any given time, so it works for most girls, but it does kind of kill that "classy" vibe they blither on so much about wanting to portray. It's mostly that I always end up going up at the same time as the girl who really, really loves eminem or something, and she makes requests, while I'm busy hustling dances. *sigh*
In any case, you should come guest DJ some night.
