Default I truly feel that I found what I want to do with my life.

    after stripping of course!

i would love, love, love to become a midwife. I am fascinated by birth.

I am ultimately going to end up in austin or vancouver, so there will be a market for my chosen profession.

I am researching how to go about this, but if anyone has any advice or helpful links I would love to see them!

My best friend is starting midwifery school on tuesday. They take 10 students a year in BC, and bf applied 3 years in a row, with a 4.0 and extensive volunteer experience, before being accepted. So, it's competitive. However, she knows ALL the ins and outs of the biz/community up here, and if you end up here, she'll totally answer your q's.

    Things she did:

-she's been a doula for years
-took a Birthing from Within teacher course
-started a business as a birth counsellor for people who have sexual trauma in their past
-volunteered 5-10 hours a week as a doula and baby cuddler (aw!)

Things others did that got them accepted into school faster:
    -became nurses
    -had Masters' degrees
    -published birth-related research

This is just off the top of my head. It's touchgtoughtough to get into here- I think it's tougher than med school, honestly. So if there are more programs/openings in TX, strongly consider that in your decision.

    Hope that helps

I think that would be a rewarding career and def one of the more pleasant areas of nursing - my mum nurses the elderly.

My friend was studying nursing to be a mid-wife but I have since heard that now there is a midwifery course on it's own and you do not have to do the whole nursing degree anymore? I am not 100% sure about this and it might only be relevant to my country.

There are many stereotypes about the industry that I work in. Sometimes they can be true but human beings are very diverse creatures and cannot be pigeon-holed into one category.

Some of the most effortlessly beautiful, kind, intelligent, successful, motivated, driven and ridiculously hilarious women that I have ever met have been dancers. I've met the best friends that I've ever had in this industry.

I was going to suggest trying to be a doula first

Yes, try being a doula. Volunteer, volunteer, volunteer. Start looking into nursing schools as well. I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse more than anything and that's what actually made me go into nursing but after getting a chance to work on the L&D floor, it's probably the last thing I'd want to do ahahaha

They mostly want RN's to work with babies, so I'd recommend at least starting out the associate's degree in nursing if you can't find a 4 year program. There are so many places to bridge from ADN to BSN. Don't go the LVN route then bridge, I don't want to work with children or babies so I'm good to go but you'll need to.

I'm not as familiar with midwifery but I'm pretty knowledgeable on schools and degree programs etc so if you need help with that aspect of it, PM me if you want!

my cousin is actually taking doula classes right now, i will ask her about those!

it seems like i would make more money as a midwife by being a RN first. that may be the route i go to.

    thanks ibi!

I'm currently a nursing student and have seriously thought about this myself. As far as I know, to become a Certified Nurse Midwife you have to first complete your BS in nursing, and then get a Master's in Advanced Practice Nursing. Not too sure about the doula thing though. Good luck!!!

Yay for you! I loved my midwifes so much, I actually tear up when I think about them. They were amazingly wonderful angels who made giving birth a safe and 'comfortable' thing for me.

I'm a mother of 2, but I'm a wuss. I had c-sections with both, under general anesthesia I know most women would gasp at that, but by God, squeezing a baby out of my va jay jay, and bull-dozing the playground was something I decided I could live without. More power to women who do it naturally.....and those who assist....but I could never handle that! I'm still somewhat fascinated by childbirth in itself - but when it came to me personally, and my body...there was just no way. I wanted it to be night-night time. Wake me up when my baby is here.
