Default Something zany is poking out of my gum

...I think it's my wisdom tooth. The one they said was so firmly embedded in my skull that it was NEVER going to embark upon a southward migration. Now, while I pay out the ass for health insurance, I have no dental insurance, and a laughably small amount of money at my disposal. So I know y'all aren't dentists, but maybe someone can tell me:

Is it okay to grow unexpected wisdom teeth without supervision? There's all this hype surrounding wisdom teeth, like you need a dental coach or someone to give your wisdom teeth the go-ahead, or else they MUST get yanked, etc. I've had my bottom ones for years, but my braces were configured to make room for my bottom wisdom teeth. My top ones were, I was told, never going to come in. But here they are, or at least, here's the right one, being all pointy and incoming. Should I rush to the dentist right now? Should I wait? Will I be in pain if I wait? Will my very nice teeth get crooked if I wait? Should I max out my credit card to get a tooth removed because wisdom teeth are legendarily threatening, or can one live a normal life with an unexpected wisdom tooth?

if the top part isn't configured to include the wisdom tooth then yes, it will definitely make the teeth more and more crooked.

I let mine wisdoms grow in-- and I wish I hadn't.

find a cheap dentist in the local free paper and at LEAST pay the "99 dollar visit for first time patients!" out of pocket to see what's going on up there. otherwise you risk having all your adult teeth crowded in to make room for a very large tooth that sneakily decided to make an appearance rather late in the game.

if it's feasible, i'd see how much some x-rays would be.

If you don't have room for it to grow in, I'd get it pulled ASAP. Otherwise you would have worn braces for nothing and will end up with crooked teeth again.

I'd pick a dental school over a cheap-O dentist in a sketchy ad. At a dental school, your work will be supervised by people considered experienced and good enough to teach the next generation.

    I second the dental school.

    Word on the dental school.

I think there is a higher risk of infection/abcess once it starts to move and can come into contact with food and bacteria in your mouth. That is exactly what is going on with my brother-in-law, who will get it pulled once the antibiotics knock out the infection.

it's not an emergency. many many many people get their wisdom teeth in and never have to get them yanked. mine went up and down for like 10 year. i finally just got them pulled cause when they would break the surface, a piece of food would get in the gum and then they'd go back down and that food would irritate my gum.

there just wasn't room for them to come in.

but it's not like your teeth are gonna go crooked overnight, let them come in, IF they bother, then go. no need to freak out. you may even have plenty of room for them.

I, too, tried to let one of mine grow in to miserable results. It came in on an angle and gave me a nasty toothache that wouldn't stop. I get most of my dental work done at NYU medical school because it's insanely cheap and the students know state-of-the-art techniques and are supervised heavily.

I let mine come in... all but one did anyway. My teeth are still as straight as the day my braces came off.

I went to a surgeon in Beverly Hills (where everything is crazy expensive) to have mine removed and for the tooth that had partially come through, it was only 300 dollars. I had them take all four teeth out with General Anesthsia and it was 1800 total.

Your medical insurance may cover part of the cost. Mine did. Dental covered the rest.

Dental schools are awesome for routine wisdom tooth extractions.

But eh, if it doesn't hurt and your teeth don't seem to be moving, fuck it. It won't kill you, and it won't shove all your other teeth out of whack in a day. Routine extraction is a relatively recent innovation and I've never heard of the masses suffering Death By Wisdom Tooth.

I vote for getting it removed....not necessarily this week, but make it a priority for sometime in the next six months.

^^^I can do it within the next 6 months. I guess if it gets really bad all of a sudden I can call my parents, who spent a gazillion dollars on my orthodontia when I was a kid, and ask them to, you know, help preserve their investment or something. But if I don't have to get it yanked, like, tomorrow, I'll be able to pay for it. Just not right now, after I've paid tuition and I'm working for damn near minimum wage.
