Default My flat iron is dying a slow torturous death.

I have had my CHI flat iron for almost four years now, it has been wonderful up to this point. This week (of course), it started to act strangely. At first the LED light would just flicker, so I thought it was just the light being weird. Now, it goes on and off intermittently, and I know it's going on and off because I hear it buzzing on and off. To get the light on I have to squeeze the iron closed a bit and then it goes back on. It's not getting as hot as usual and my hair is not looking as good as usual. Luckily, it's not humid here, or I would be screwed. I have naturally medium-coarse curly hair that starts to dread itself after 48 hours if i don't wash it. Wearing my hair curly is not an option- i make significantly less money at work with it curly, and it gets shorter because the curls shrink up so much.

So..... my next expense after rent is going to have to be a flat iron.... it's completely necessary for work.

Which flat iron is the best? I was looking at the GHD and the T3. I use it 3-4 times/week (I only wash my hair that much) and for touch ups at work. I think it's cool that the GHD says that it can make curls, I would like to do spiral curls at work... but I just don't see how that works? Does anyone have a GHD styler and uses it to curl their hair?

I also want one that is going to be healthy for my hair.... so that means high heat and less time spent in contact with the hair from what I've read, and ceramic plates. I don't think I want to get another CHI, unless they've improved in the last couple years.

Don't get a Chi. They're notorious for breaking down. Go to Folica.com and read the reviews. Get a tourmaline one this time.

My chi is breaking too, also been 4 years. It doesn't get too hot, like I can totally touch it, then sometimes it starts smoking But, isn't 4 years of almost daily use a pretty long run? My Chi was good to me.

I have ghd and I use it to curl my hair as well as straighten. As the straighteners are so hot the curls last really well. I think I saw a youtube tutorial teaching you how to use them as a curler, will have a look for ya.

OMG I have the SAME problem with my CHI. I know this isn't your question but to make you CHI last until your new one sometimes I have to shake the cord around for a while to get the light to stay on. One reason it may not be getting hot is because the light is off meaning it's not heating, not necessarily that it's really losing all its power. It has to do with the way the cord is laying on the counter, at least with my CHI. Very weird I thought I was the only one.

Yes! My $70 tourmaline iron does such a good job on my hard-to-straighten hair. And I've had a CHI before. I use my tourmaline with a straightening brush (double-sided). SO effective.

that is exactly what mine does. the cord and position of the iron is very temperamental. If it's not laying right the light won't go on.

^ Throw it away! Before I got my Paul Mitchell one I had one that was like 60-70 bucks and it started getting like that and then it started smoking and sparks flew from it. It scared the crap out of me!
