(snip)"Israel will not allow Iran to attain nuclear capability and if time begins to run out, Jerusalem will not hesitate to take whatever means necessary to prevent Iran from achieving its nuclear goals, the government has recently decided in a special discussion.

According to the Israeli daily Ma'ariv, whether the United States and Western countries succeed in thwarting the Islamic Republic's nuclear ambitions diplomatically, through sanctions, or whether a US strike on Iran is eventually decided upon, Jerusalem has begun preparing for a separate, independent military strike.

So far, Israel has not received American authorization to use US-controlled Iraqi airspace, nor has the defense establishment been successful in securing the purchase of advanced US-made warplanes which could facilitate an Israeli strike. "(snip)

(snip)"A senior Iranian military commander has warned that any US or Israeli attack on the Islamic republic would start a new world war, the state news agency IRNA reported on Saturday.
"Any aggression against Iran will start a world war," deputy chief of staff for defence publicity, Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri, said in a statement carried by the agency.

Iran is under international pressure to halt uranium enrichment, a process which lies at the core of fears about Iran's nuclear programme as it can make nuclear fuel as well as the fissile core of an atom bomb.

"The unrestrained greed of the US leadership and global Zionism... is gradually leading the world to the edge of a precipice," Jazayeri said, citing the unrest in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan and Georgia.

"It is evident that if such a challenge occurs, the fake and artificial regimes will be eliminated before anything," he said, without naming any countries.

Iran does not recognise Israel, which is often described by officials in Tehran as a "fake regime."

The United States and its staunch ally Israel, the region's sole if undeclared nuclear armed nation, accuse Iran of seeking atomic weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear programme.

Iran has vehemently denied the allegations, insisting its nuclear drive is aimed solely at providing electricity for a growing population when its reserves of fossil fuels run out.

The United States has never ruled out military action against Iran over its defiance of international demands for an enrichment freeze, but so far is pursuing the diplomatic route with calls for more sanctions.

Iran has repeatedly vowed a crushing response to any attacks and it has flexed military muscles in recent years by holding war games and showing off an array of home-grown weaponry and missiles.

Another top military commander said Iran was prepared to "take the enemies off-guard" and would unveil more weapons in case of an attack.

"Some of the equipment of our armed forces have been announced but there are important things hidden whose effect would be shown on the day (of any attack)," deputy army commander Abdolrahim Mousavi told Fars news agency. "(snip)

It didn't start World War III when Israel eliminated Iraq's nuclear weapons program. Sounds like more Iranian blustering to me. Although "global Zionism" is my new favorite phrase ever, LOL... that's hilarious!

After Israel's poor showing in Lebanon, I don't think they are going to move independently without firm assurances of US backing, except in the manner previous.

And the West really needs to better understand the role hyperbole and blustering does play in Middle East gov't statements to the rest of the world.

Suppose US or Israel launched an air/guided missile strike on Iranian nuclear facilities(but no initial invasion). Which countries would "jump into the fray" with Iran?? Russia- maybe. China or India- Why should they?? Iraq, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt?? - Iran is an Aryan nation, not exactly "an Arab brother" that was attacked.

^^^ Russia for sure based on historical relationships with Iran and current relationships with Syria and the Caucasus countries like Georgia. China ... perhaps, because Iran is sitting on huge oil reserves while China is dealing with much smaller oil exporting countries a half a world away (i.e. Venezuela, Nigeria) to meet her oil import needs. The arab countries ... probably, based on their anti-Israel posture. Much depends on whether or not this were to 'officially' occur with active US participation versus an 'official' Israeli action with 'unofficial' US support.

What are they going to jump in and do? Chinese or Russian involvement would most definatly bring us in to the fray. The Chinese won't do that and the Russians don't matter. If the other Arab countries go involved, which I'm not sure they would, Israel could easily handle them all.

^^^ arguably, Russian involvement would be very possible without much of a Western reaction ... and especially so if Putin's hand is on the shutoff valves of oil and gas pipelines that Western Europe depends on, and if President Obama is in the oval office ! This is the reason that the 'tin foil hat' crowd is citing the time window between the November election and the January inauguration as the most likely period for an Israeli strike against Iran.

(snip)"Former US Ambassador to UN says Obama victory in November will prompt Israeli raid on Iranian nuclear facilities prior to inauguration. Arab nations will be ‘positive, privately’ about strike, says Bolton

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, said on Tuesday that he believes Israel will stage a raid against Iran’s nuclear facilities if Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama wins the upcoming presidential elections.

Bolton said the IAF would likely strike in the interim term between election day (November 4th) and the inauguration (January 20th 2009) – while George W. Bush is still in office.

“I think if they are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President,” Bolton said in an interview with FOX News.

“I don’t think they will do anything before our election because they don’t want to affect it. And they’d have to make a judgment whether to go during the remainder of President Bush’s term in office or wait for his successor.”"(snip)

(snip)"Bolton believes that Israel may consider postponing the attack if Senator John McCain emerges as the victor in the race, and said apprehension of Obama’s foreign policy in Jerusalem would likely be the motivating factor behind an early strike.

(snip)"Mr Obama has said he will open high-level talks with Iran “without preconditions” while Mr McCain views attacking Iran as a lesser evil than allowing Iran to become a nuclear power."(snip)

    from

a similar assessment from an oil commodities speculator ...

(snip)"Those insiders are convinced that Israel is not going to stand by and let Little Man Ahmandinijad brings his nuclear weapons dream to fruition. If Obama is elected, the Israelis are guaranteed to act before he takes office on January 20, 2009. They have no faith in Obama's commitment to protect Israel or prevent Iran from getting nukes.

An Israeli strike, whether with or without United States' support or participation, is guaranteed to disrupt oil traffic in the Middle East for anywhere from a couple of weeks to several months. Iran has credibly threatened to shut down the straits of Hormuz if their nuclear facilities are attacked. Don't doubt that they have the means to do it.

Roughly 17 million barrels of oil per day or about 40% of all ocean-carried oil is shipped via tanker through these narrow straits. All of the oil squeezing through the 21-mile strait is well within range of Iranian missiles and aircraft. The sinking of only a few tankers would be sufficient to render those waters impassable.

If Israel is acting with the support of the United States, you can expect the American Navy to try to keep the straits open, but the Iranian response is likely to be intense. It is possible that the Iranian response will also include strikes against its neighbors production facilities. Facing Iran across the gulf and the straits, after all, are Saudia Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. (We won't even consider here the 40,000-60,000 missiles aimed at Israel by Iranian proxies in Lebanon and Gaza.)

World producers, consumers and -- yes -- speculators are hedging their bets based upon the expectation that a huge oil stockpile crisis is just around the corner.

While an Obama election guarantees Israeli action between November 4, 2008 and January 20, 2009, a McCain election victory does NOT eliminate the possibility of a strike against Iran, it merely widens the window of opportunity. The Israelis know that they can count on John McCain to support action against Iran's nukes, and therefore, they will not feel compelled to act by January 20, 2009.

Of course, there is also the more remote possibility that Israel is already in possession of information concerning Iran's nuclear progress which makes immediate action necessary. Whether Israel, under such circumstances, would take the risk of being accused of trying to influence the U.S. elections by acting before November 4th is unknown -- most likely remote, but not impossible.

Therefore, the threat of massive disruption of oil supplies is with us today and will be with us AT LEAST until January 20, 2009 if Obama is elected. The risk remains if McCain is elected, but the action deadline will be extended to that time when Israel -- and perhaps the United States -- determines that Iran's nuclear program is approaching the point of no return and must be stopped then and there.

Think about it: If you were a big money producer or consumer in the oil markets wouldn't YOU be hedging your interests right now? Only a fool would not! "(snip)

I could be crazy but I just doubt the Russia's are really going to attempt anything like that. Georgia was just a flexing of the muscles. War with Israel is a fight with us. Neither Israel or America are anything like Georgia.

War with Israel is a fight with us
Many Israelis / Jews already have grave doubts in regard to levels of future US commitment to unconditionally defend Israel, and particularly so if Obama wins the election. There's no reason to think that the Russians aren't harboring the very same doubts and factoring them into their planning. This could be a minimum risk scenario for the Russians if, like the invasion of Georgia, Israel were to be quickly overrun in a matter of hours / days presenting the US / West with a 'fait-accompli' before any US response could be mobilized.

(snip)"Russia threatens sale of offensive weapons to Israel's enemies

MOSCOW — Russian security officials threatened retaliation against Israel for its weapons exports to Georgia including eight different aerial drones.

Russian Deputy Chief of Staff Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn said Israel supplied at least eight different models of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to Georgia. Nogovitsyn said Israel has also sold a range of weapons and sought to export main battle tanks to Georgia.

Russian diplomatic sources said the government of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was furious over Israel's refusal to impose a military embargo on Georgia. The sources said Putin's aides had urged Israel several times to halt weapons exports.
"We asked Israel not to sell offensive weapons to a hostile neighboring state, but they said they're a sovereign state," a diplomatic source said.

"Well, Israel shouldn't be surprised if we sell offensive weapons to Israel's neighbors."

Already, Russia, in wake of its military victory over Georgia, has scheduled a summit with Syria to discuss offensive weapons sales, the sources said. Syrian President Bashar Assad was scheduled to meet Putin in Moscow on Aug. 20. (snip)

(snip)"So far, the diplomatic sources said, Putin has been careful to limit Russian military sales to Iran and Syria to defensive systems. In 2007, they said, Putin, who remains in charge of defense export policy, vetoed efforts by the Defense Ministry and the state-owned arms agency Rosoboronexport to sell the Iskander-E long-range rocket to Syria.

"Putin will now offer Iskander to Syria," another Russian source said. "Whether this will be a serious offer or something just to scare the Israelis we'll know in another few months.""(snip)

more developments from the Russians ...

(snip)"Moscow halts Iran cooperation with US, will complete Bushehr reactor
    DEBKAfile Special Report

    August 30, 2008, 7:32 PM (GMT+02:00)

Bushehr nuclear reactor to be ready to go by end of 2008

The Georgia quarrel has all but derailed US-Russian cooperation on the Iran issue. Moscow is not only pulling out of the diplomatic and sanctions front against Iran’s nuclear program; according to DEBKAfile’s Russian sources, Moscow has decided to finally finish building Iran’s nuclear reactor in the southern town of Bushehr before the end of the year, after holding back for five years at Washington’s insistence.

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin said in reference to the impact of the Georgia row on US-Russian cooperation on Iran Thursday, Aug. 28: “If nobody wants to talks with us on these issues and cooperation with Russia is not needed, then for God’s sake, do it yourself.”

Moscow has now committed to completing the reactor within four months. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the functioning plant will enable Iran to operate a heavy water plant and produce plutonium as an alternative to enriched uranium for building a nuclear bomb. Tehran had originally counted on the Syria’s North Korean reactor at al Kibar for plutonium. It was demolished by Israel last September.

Putin’s sharp comment means the West can forget about Russian support for another round of harsh sanctions to punish Iran for refusing to suspend uranium enrichment. He made it clear that Western nations will have to resolve the standoff without Russian help if they refuse to cooperate with Moscow on Georgia.

The Russians have lost no time in following through on their threat. This week, they are sending the head of their Nuclear Energy Board, Sergei Kireinko, to Tehran at the head of a large delegation. They will stay for at least ten days to clear away the problems for getting the Bushehr reactor up and running by the end of 2008."(snip)

and more tidbits from the Dutch (courtesy of Debka for english language summary) ...

(snip)"Dutch sabotage agent recalled from Iran over “impending” US attack - report
    DEBKAfile Special Report

    August 30, 2008, 5:36 PM (GMT+02:00)

A Dutch AIVD Secret Service ultra-secret operation underway in Iran in recent years has been halted and an agent recalled in view of “impending US plans to attack Iran,” within weeks, writes Joost de Haas, known for his good intelligence contacts, in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The AIVD operation aimed to infiltrate and sabotage the weapons [and nuclear] industry in the Islamic Republic.

According to intelligence sources in the Netherlands, the US [or Israel] was expected to make a decision within weeks to attack nuclear plants with unmanned aircraft, used to avoid risking the lives of air crews and warplanes.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report this would be the first time drones operated by remote control were used against major strategic targets, necessary in Israel’s case to hold its air fleet and flight crews ready to defend the country against reprisal from Iran’s allies. Syria and the Lebanese Hizballah have stockpiled thousands of rockets for this purpose.

The Iranian targets to be bombed would include also military installations brought to light partly by the Dutch espionage operation, described by De Telegraaf as extremely successful. “One of the agents was able to infiltrate the Iranian industry” and for years shared information with the American CIA. “Various supplies could also be sabotaged and stopped. These were parts for missiles and launching equipment.”

According to DEBKAfile’s sources, the expectation disclosed by the Dutch newspaper would explain the fresh spate of threats from Iran.

Thursday, Aug. 28, Iranian sources told the London-based Arabic al Quds that Tehran had recently transferred to Hizballah new long-range rockets capable of hitting every inch of Israeli soil with great accuracy.

They were to be fired if Israel or the United States attacked Iran.

Dep. Chief of General Staff Masus Jazairi said Saturday, Aug. 30, that any attack on Iran would mean the beginning of a new world war. He said the “greed of the US and Zionists” is gradually leading the world to collapse as demonstrated in Sudan, Iraq, Afghanistan and the Caucasus. "(snip)

And some gratuitous alarm-sounding. The urgent news of an imminent Iranian war has been going on for years now.

It is arguable that the alarm sounding is far from gratuitous. The Russian military action in Georgia was very 'out of character'. The Russian commitment to supply whatever materials and expertise is necessary to get Iran's reactor running by the end of this year is also very 'out of character'. What will NOT be out of character is for the Israelis to take a swipe at Iran's new reactor the same way they did at Syrias North Korean built reactor last year.
