    Default Ducks as a pet?

Okay so this woman on CL has a duck that is completely domesticated. As in it's never been in the wild and always been handled by people. A tenant in her building owned this duck, and then abandoned it.

She doesn't want it so she's giving it away for free.

I won't lie, I totally want the damn thing.

My question is, how the hell do you care for a duck?! I'm sure she could tell me as she's had it a few weeks. She says it follows her around ,likes to be petted and is paper trained.

    How bad is duck poo?

Will my cat try and kill it?!

Check out what I found! http://www.geocities.com/petduckassociation/ It has tons of advice. I've never thought about keeping a duck, but it might be fun!

That would be an interesting pet. I think the quaking might drive me crazy though. My dog never barks and for that, I'm VERY thankful.

(she'll bark if startled on guard but not at every little noise)

I soooo want this duck. More a less for my youngest son. The kid is a fanatic when it comes to animals. And he's very OCD about it.

I had ducks as a kid. they weren't that noisy. They didn't poop in the house much, but you have to expect that might not be the case with this duck. The goose we had turned mean, but the duck we had was eaten by a dog

but, I don't remember anything bad about having them.

Oh lord Fancy! lol. We dont have a dog. Just a cat. She's old as dirt. we won't be letting the duck outside at all. The woman stated it wouldn't fair well in the wild as it's never been outside etc.

My youngest tends to be very loving and caring with animals. More so than most kids. Since they are going to be homeschooled and us home ALL the time I feel we would be responsible enough with it.

sounds fine to me as long as the duck knows where to poop. but on sunny days-- if you had an area (you could get it's wings clipped if they haven't been already-- probably a wisse idea anyway) where you could let it out-- that'd be good. I can't imagine being an animal and not being allowed SOME outside time-- say with a little wading pool for the duck in particular.

I had a goose and it was the experience from hell. It doubled in size everyday and it shit everywhere and was a pain in the ass to clean up. I don't really know the difference between and duck and goose but the payoff didn't equal the work and hassle it entailed. But I suppose if this duck is well behaved and domesticated it could be a different story.

i raised & showed chickens as a pet & they were my favorite, besides horses. i trained my cochin to ride on the handlebars of my bike. if you raise chickens & ducks from babies they can be very tame & good for kids.

i rescued a baby duck from the middle of the street when i lived in a suburban neighborhood & tried to keep it...it didn't work so well. the thing hated me & obviously wanted to go back into the wild. i couldn't just let it go without a mom though, so i gave it to a 4-Her in hopes that they could make it love them.

Joey from Friends had a duck and I don't remember him ever complaining about him, except the time he ate the wedding ring but overall he liked his duck and he actually lived in a fairly small apartment.

Sophia. Get the duck. And maybe you could put clothes on it... I'm envisioning photos in your sig line similar to L&L's.

Never had duck eggs, don't even know if its legal here but I just got the image of the lady duck looking at you with a sad face while you eat her children, you almost turned me into a vegetarian there.

Okay... think of a pet duck like a pet chicken... you're not eating her babies, you're eating her unfertilized eggs that will never be babies. Female ducks lay eggs. They lay NICE tasty fresh eggs! Just like a chicken, but bigger.

You don't know if...duck eggs..are legal? or ducks?

I meant duck eggs, I don't know if its legal to eat them. I think I got your example but I still think its weird, I mean there are people in other countries who eat hamsters as delicacy(I think I saw it in the travel channel, it wasn't a 3rd world country either) but if I had a hamster pet I wouldn't wait for it to have babies and eat them.

^although I would probably try the hamster if I went to that country and maybe even the duck eggs, I just think its weird to eat you own pet's, if that makes any sense.

It's legal to eat duck eggs. they're like any other egg. UNFERTILIZED. It's not like the eggs you buy at the store are going to hatch in to chicks on day.

And I've had a pet chicken (someone gave it to my brother for easter). WORST pet ever. It shit everywhere and one time almost shit in his mouth. And catching it to take it back to the people who gave it to us was hell.
