Default I want to be a fitness model... but I'm clueless.

This is inspired by the "perfect body" thread, which I love and check often. I think girls like this are the hottest girls on Earth. I'm past the point in my life where I'm ever going to be effortlessly skinny ever again. I'm 5'7, and I used to be 110 until I turned 25, and I'm now 130. I'm by no means FAT, in fact I get more compliments on my body than I did when I was skinny... but I want to be in awesome shape for the rest of my life and I don't want to be that skinny girl again. I want to be able to run a mile. I want to be able to hold my own body weight on the pole. I want to look fucking amazing. I want strong, toned arms. I want a high, tight, big ass. I want the kind of stomach that makes guys say "Jeez, I should go to the gym" when I give them a dance.

Where do I start? Are there any books you recommend? How do you get into the figure competition circuit? Do I really have to give up Jaeger Bombs?

    Give me your knowledge.

www.musclewithattitude.com and www.bodybuilding.com are good resources.

And then you can check out organisations like Fitness America and FAME/www.worldnaturalsports.com. There are other organizations I can't think of but they should be listed on the sites I mentioned earlier and in the back of magazines like Oxygen.

If you don't want to compete, you can go on castings/auditions and/or find an agent. Look into things like Backstage.com (backstage magazine) and Ross Reports.

About the drinks .... yeah ... you might have to give them up ( nearly completely ). Drinking = hell on your figure ( or A LOT of exra work to make up for it ).

This is going to be a seriously difficult, involved journey - but I know it will be worth it. I'm going to start a diary thread and post pics and my work out routines, meals, stats, etc.

I competed in women's figure and was married to a bodybuilder. The best way to break into fitness modeling is through figure competitions. You will gain exposure, meet fitness photographers, network with people in the industry, get sponsors, and book jobs to work trade shows.

Here's my advice for fitness modeling and competitions:

    1. Attend a show in your area. Make sure to go to the pre-judging show in the morning and the night (finals and awards) show at night. This will give you an idea of what the judges are looking for and if this is something you really want to do.

    2. Competing will cost anywhere from $3000 to $10,000. So besides your time, it is a financial investment. Your expenses will be a trainer, nutritionist, posing coach, supps, 2 EXPENSIVE competing suits (anywhere from 300-1500 each, however sometimes you can find a deal on used and have them altered), and for your show date, hair, makeup artist, nails, lashes, pro airbrush tanning, shoes, accessories, competition entry fee, and organization membership fee.

    3. A trainer can make you or break you. You can do a show alone, but if you are serious about placing and doing well, you will need to hire an experienced trainer. Make sure he/she has either competed in the organization you choose or has trained many clients that have done well. Most trainers with comp experience do not work at the big gym chains, rather in small independent contractor facilities. If you can't find a local trainer with the right creds, many pros offer services online. They will do weekly phone and email consults with you.

    4. For your first show, generally people prep for 16 weeks. This will give you time to lean down and play around with your phsyique. After your first show, you will probably only need 12 weeks. So find an upcoming show and set your date. I would not recommend traveling for your first show.

    5. I would suggest competing in the NPC, this is the largest and most followed amateur bodybuilding org. If you make nationals, you have a chance at winning an IFBB pro card. Most of the models you see and the one you posted are all IFBB pros. The only drawback with this org, is it is NOT natural and not tested. Therefore, many women opt to take low doses of steroids and hormones in order to compete at such a low bodyfat and hold the lean muscle mass needed.

    6. Make sure your trainer takes photos and measurements weekly. You will want to be able to refer to your pics to assess your strengths and weaknesses. Your diet and training regimen will also need to be modified bi-weekly.

    7. Your prep diet will most likely consist of egg whites+oatmeal, chicken+brown rice and fish+broc. 50 minutes of empty stomach cardio daily. Weights 5x per week.

    8. Book as many photoshoots as possible for the weekend of your show.

    9. Subscribe to Oxygen mag. It is informative and inspirational. It also covers figure competitions.

    10. Register for the forums at www.musculardevelopment.com and www.elitefitness.com Many pros post here and it is a great resource for advice. The women's bodybuilding forums are particularly helpful, just ignore the steroid discussions. There really isn't that much difference btwn women in bodybuilding and women in figure, except the drug cycles and posing routines.

    11. Practice your posing. This is VITAL and overlooked by many first time competitors. So you look great on stage, well it means nothing if you can't properly display it to the judges. They are looking for overall presentation so nail your front, back, and side poses! Walk confidently and smile.

    12. It's a lot of hard work. Sometimes, you'll feel like quitting. It's hard giving up alcohol and parties bc you have to hit the gym and diet hard-core. It's a lot of time and money. But it is SOOOOO worth it, once you walk out on that stage. The feeling of accomplishment you get and the adrenaline rush is amazing.

Good luck! I hope this helps! Sorry so long, there really is so much to competing, this is just the basics.

Is the chicken boiled? The fish broiled? Could I put lemon on it?

Thank you so much J-Lynne! That's amazing advice.

I think it's going to take me about 6 months to...
Lose the obvious excess body fat
Get in better cardiovascular strength (this is really important to me)
Build a foundation of muscle mass to work with.

Going to the gym tomorrow morning. 30 minutes of cardio and hitting every weight machine for 3 sets of 20 reps to failure.

After reading J-Lynne's post and doing some research, I'm kind of discouraged. I still want to become super-buff because it'll help me work and health wise, but it seems like the only advantage to competing is to get better credentials as a personal trainer or get modeling gigs for supplements and such. Neither is a personal goal. Maybe bikini modeling or something else would be a better path?

First step, get in awesome shape. Second step, wait until I'm done with school to see if I want to invest the time and money in competing.

Fitness modeling is really bad ass, but honestly fitness modeling/body building for men and women is just too expensive if you want to be pro. It sucks because look at other athletes, football, basketball, golf, and they all get PAID! Only the very top get paid in bodybuilding and fitness. Most of the time the person is getting into debt trying to achieve their goals. :-(

I am the on slender side of average, but I used to weigh a lot less. It was effortless to be skinny, and I loved my body for that. Now my metabolism has slowed, and I'm never going to be that skinny girl again, so I'd like to aspire to be strong for once in my life and get a hot body back. I can't lift my own body weight, and I can't run a mile - nor have I ever been able to do either. I think muscle girl is my new path.

It probably isn't helping I'm currently having a full-milk iced latte and coffee cake. I need to find something to do other than eat and drink when I'm having a bad day.
