Default So.... what's up with Sarah Palin?

Thoughts, anyone? Why would McCain choose a governor with only two years experience, when his main argument against Obama is that he doesn't have enough experience? Why choose her? It it a stunt to grab the Hillary voters? Is it to try and make McCain more blue-collar? Is it because he really thinks she's the best candidate for the position? I'm so lost on this one (I was calling Lieberman).

He wanted a true conservative who wasn't Mitt Romney. But for people concerned about his age and whether his health and life will hold up for four years, she makes him look even older. I was hoping for Colin Powell.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

^^^^ I'm not so sure. I mean, he cemented the conservatives who were scared of him choosing a pro-choice running mate. And people are saying that it speaks to McCain's "reformer" image that he chose her.

agreed, no matter what, he has to deal and have the right-wingers' support, which surprisingly was grumbling. (i mean, what other viable candidate did they have to choose from?)

He also did it to try and secure the base of extreme social conservatives, but in doing so he alienated the the more conservative democrats and liberal independants who may have voted for McCain. I think this VP pick sealed McCain's fate and he's going to lose by double digits. The VP is supposed to be an insurance policy, not a blatant political move. McCain = Douchebag!!!
i disagree (and agree with rozz). i think he did a wise political move with what he had available and the opportunity obama gave him.

forget the pro-life aspect for a moment.

the palin choice gives (steals) the women banner back to the republicans from the ferraro/hillary side. not saying the repubs will get (all of) the hillary supporters, of course, but it's a good move if just some of the 'women' vote is secured (again, excluding the pro-life aspect for the moment). how likely was that bit of female votes going to go with a McCain/Pawlenty ticket or McCain/Romney?

    but now with a McCain/Palin ticket, there's at least a chance. there's a moment's of hesitation.

the very fact that people (like rooster) are even considering there's the possibility that some Hillary supporters might switch sides just because she's a woman, proves that point. would the Hillary supporters' defection even be a topic/possibility if it was McCain/Romney? there would only be ludricious stares of "wtf are you even talking about?"

i think it's a good pick, powell would've been just as interesting except there's no women aspect there. but a lot of women (imo) will realize that this is probably the best chance for a female president in the near future.

c'mon, the 72+ year old guy twice-cancer'd isn't likely to outlive the 44 yr old milf. she's got a VERY good chance of being president during the next term. a lot of women i know are now considering that and surprisingly ignoring the pro-life aspect.

i think it's a good political choice. i didn't think he had the nutz to do it actually and i'm upping my respect for mccain (as a politican-wise) because of it.

otoh, i had lowered my respect of obama (politican-wise) tremendously because he snubbed hillary. i mean, that was a slam-dunk/cakewalk to the white house move that he just so completely and utterly flubbed!

consider this: how much talk would palin get (other than jokes like leno's above) if hillary was already on the dem ticket? palin's getting the air time simply because she's a woman (mostly imo). the mooseburgers, beauty queen, and governor-mayor of podunk are just joke targets then. well, they still are.

if i were the democratic leaders, i'd be crapping my pants, headsmacking ourselves, and still wondering why obama couldn't swallow his pride and just have tapped hillary.

mccain probably was giggling or orgasming when obama tapped biden. jeebus! biden is almost mccain's long-lost senate brother. obama/biden just isn't as interesting as obama/clinton...or even mccain/palin.

Hmm, the harshest criticism of Palin is coming from the some of the more devout liberals on the board, people who weren't going to vote for McCain had he picked their favorite movie star. Go figure. Whom exactly do you folks think he should have picked?

Really, you have to consider the predicament McCain was in to understand this choice. The conservatives who are understandably going to be a big part of his voting block seem to have a bone to pick with not just him, but pretty much every Republican whom he faced off with in the primaries. Romney's a Mormon. Huckabee spends too much. Rudy's been divorced. Blah, blah, blah. Lets face it, these guys were all damaged goods whom he had nothing to gain from. So why not go with an outsider who will satisfy that block?

Is Palin going to attract Hillary voters? Unless she can somehow tap into issues that would appeal to Hillary voters like health care reform, I doubt it. Personally, I think the whole notion that McCain picked her precisely for that has been entirely overblown by the media.

i say, he did it just so he can attract voters by saying if you're gonna vote for obama just to make history, well vote for me and we can still make history. but don't listen to me as i know nothing about politics.

    True dat, doc!

The not-so-subtle implication by some media sources seems to be that many "Hillary voters" will abruptly reverse their political/ideological stances and embrace Palin because she has a female reproductive system. Yep, sure... If so, should I assume that any Republican with a suntan will be voting for Obama?

Interesting, right? This could either hurt or help. Stupidly the 17 yr old will marry the father. THAT'S gonna work.

Obama has already announced that this issue is off limits. I doubt if any true blue conservative is going to vote against McCain/Palin because of something her daughter did. His having a lesbian daughter didn't turn people against Dick Cheney. How many of us have had kids who did things we would not have wanted them to do? Her pregnant daughter has no impact at all on her being ready to be president if John McCain drops dead a month into office like William Henry Harrison did.

I used to really like John McCain until he sold out his own views to the right wing in order to get the nomination. Sarah Palin makes me as excited about John McCain being president as I was when Bush nominated Harriet Myers to the Supreme Court.

I would have lost all respect for Powell if he
had been offered and accepted a VP nomination.

I agree obama/clinton ticket would be better than
the current ticket but I like Biden a little bit more
    now than I did initially.

I do think Palin makes good copy. think about the
maxim of it being mostly about how you look, a smaller
portion about HOW you say things and very little in the
end about what one actually says. I think Palin fulfills this
    idea to a tee.

It seems a bit more balanced than I first thought -- between the parties. Palin previously has had zero national notablity, but she seems a good choice as any of the mainline Reb candidates for a co-position. I supposed there are other unknowns who would be ok, but we don't know them. This is aside from all the pro-choice/pro-life issues. For McCain, I didn't get the idea initially that he would push his personal choice that way. But since he has disappointingly grabbed onto Bush's coattails, now I just don't know if l respect him as a Republican.

""Sarah Palin gave birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome at the age of 44.

Is anyone else appalled at this?

The risk of giving birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome is extremely high in women over 40 (and even higher when the father is also over 40).

Sarah Palin "opposes the use of birth control pills and condoms even among married couples".

I am disgusted by this irresponsible behaviour. To give birth at age 44 to a baby with Down's because you refuse to use birth control inexcusable. Ignoring the dangers that you expose yourself and your baby to by refusing to use birth control after 40 is negligent and careless. To believe that a woman like this has the opportunity to become Vice President of the United States of America in 2008 makes me ill.

Does anyone else share this opinion?
